@fairyheli2 This was my first ev vehicle, so I wanted to make it as simple as possible by using friction drive. Now having built two other electric bicycles I realize that there are much better ways of powering the bike. Compressed air would be cool to see, however I wonder if you could get good range.
@hutchtransfer after looking at power and energy densities as well as cost, lithium or lead with a bldc motor is the way to go. rc motors weigh 100grams but make 700+ watt
I made one very similar to this when I was about 14. I had a controller failure then the on off didn't work. I ended up dumping it over my back with my face being the brake on the concrete. My Momma was so pissed at me. After I got out of the emergency room and got a clean bill of health she whipped me with a fly swatter. This really brought back some good memories. I got the nick name "Pat Splat" that summer. Your design is much better though, really awesome.
@longp2000 I was happy how this turned out. This was my first ever electric bicycle build. Definately not the most efficient, however I learned a lot and this helped me build my other electric bicycles on my channel. I also used to have a weed wacker powered bicycle, but I decided to go green since it is cleaner and less maintenance.
@fairyheli2 No, she whipped me for 1. not wearing a helmet, 2. for tearing up my bike and 3. because she'd already told me to wait until my Dad could help me. Trust me, I deserved every whipping I got, and probably many more. :)
@hutchtransfer Oh i know that , i went 35 mph on the back of a 600cc motorbike and i thought i was going 70 , and when the idiot pushed it to 150 mph , i couldn't keep my mouth shut. So i want to build a bike to go 30 mph only to use it when going to college and back :) i guess that would motivete me to go to college because often at 6:00 in the morning you don't feel like getting up and walking 40 minutes no matter how much coffee you drink
Wait couldn't you put a remote bridge rectifier so you can turn on and off the rectifier so when you do pedal it charges the battery like a alternat.or
Yes, for this bike as well as my electric pusher trailer I bought an old Scoot N Go scooter off of Craigslist and used the parts on this one. The batteries, controller, motor and throttle came off of it. In my pusher trailer I also used part of the frame and the tires/freewheel. I would rather have the parts on a bike because if the batteries die then you are not stranded.
I did the same thing but mine only has 200 watts came off of My Izip electric scooter I put a weed eater engine on My scooter and I guess I put My electric motor on My mountain bike good for riding on bike path gas isn't aloud on the bike path. Oh Mine frition drive to and I have Mine the same way with the batteries and motor on a Trans, it rear bike rack.
I hope you don't think that putting a larger wheel on that will change it's gear ratio. Your final drive is only determined by drive roller diameter. The top of a wheel always travels twice the speed of the axle-no matter what the wheel diameter. It's just like a tank or bulldozer-the top of the track always travels twice the speed of the vehicle. that's how cavemen sent us the wheel. :(
wats the top speed. i bet its probably not alot scince the motor is driving the big wheel instead of a small gear. but i guess it has alot more torque
The top speed is around 20mph with a slight downhill grade. Normal cruising is around 15mph. It has decent power, but the wheel sometimes slips. I am now working on a motorized pusher trailer. I will post a video soon.
The first thing I noticed is how quiet the motor is. If it was a Currie motor like on an Ezip, you'd hear a very loud whirring sound that people and dogs can hear coming from a long way off. Great work and post another video when you develop a tensioner that raises the roller off the tire ha.
Yeah I am aware of how loud those are. I wanted to build something comparable that was cheaper and quieter. Eventually I will design some sort of device so that I can ride the bike with or without the motor engaged. Thanks for your input.
Good job. It looks like you should get a lot more than 6 miles range. Should be at least double that unless the batteries are just worn out. Interesting drive roller. By the way, you can get SLA batteries that size with 20amps or even more. Cost more, but better range. 20 mph is good. Currie ezip only does 15mph.
i think i will use other ev technology, such as rc outrunners, or even compressed air, as i have methods of using compressed air.

i have two 20ah batteries on a touring bicycle frame, how long do you think they will last?

maybe you could use gas like a real american... jk

@ChrisCross722 It's the smart Americans who are trying to develop alternate sources of energy... :)

@ChrisCross722 but gas comes from arab countries where's coal comes from america

15mph always seems faster on the bike

Very true. If you click on my channel I have a new crank powered bike I built that hit 27mph. That's really fast on a bike!

motoredbikes com Changing to a bigger tire/wheel won't increase "gear" size, but might provide better traction.

Yes I realize the only way I will effect the speed is by changing the drive roller diameter.

The batteries were from a used scooter so they might be beginning to wear out. I would probably get some 18 amp batteries once I get the funds!
