I think Logitech heard Chris' statement about "companies writing off webcams as crappy little devices" They have always been top notch with video and sound quality, but now especially in the past few years with the C905, C910, C525/C510, C615, Pro 9000, Orbit series, and now the C920 which includes a built in H264 encoder which takes the strain off the computer and allows true 1080 HD video calling on Skype 5.7 and above. Check out Chris' reviews of the C510 and C910 on the right hand side.
The main features I am looking for in a webcam is high quality and motion detection video recording. What do you know about those features in a webcam. What is the brand, model, and store to buy it? I wouldn't get that webcam you spent a hundred dollars on even if someone gave it to me for free. That was ridiculous for it to perform like that. Could you let me know about the motion detection web cams?
@livingwatersofGod google 'free webcam security software motion detection' by the way you can use 10$ webcams off ebay with them but they look like crap compared to a higher resolution cams. vx4000 looks really nice i just installed one on a side job recently. what you are looking for is 1024x768 resolution AT A MINIMUM if you want a nice quality picture. Also backlighting is really important for low light situations. Security lights are an alternative for outdoor night security shots.
I'm SO with you bro. They can create all sorts of funky cams and cam corders, but NO decent webcam?! wtf, seriously... I'm losing my mind with this bit of tech. I need a good frikkin webcam already man...
Lifecam is so frustrating! My webcam goes off and on repeatedly when I open the program. I will see video feed and then as soon as I press record it says it isn't plugged in! I payed 89 dollars for a big stress factor :/
Ok review but the lifecam is working very well on MSN for me and I'm usin the 3000 not the 7000 also 3000 gets the most buzz and the more posative reviews
Not sure what your point is here. Are you saying that these cameras are bad, or you got a faulty one? Why didn't you take it back to the shop instead of bitching about it here?
And of course when are you going to learn the facts of commercial life about the economics of production quantity?
You seem like a smart guy. This definitely is not a hardware issue. Maybe you should try alternating your computer settings. I bought three of these and no problems with any of them. Before you post a video review maybe you should figure out how to use your own hardware.
It's not a issue with a webcam, it's issue with your computer hardware moron. Check your video configuration. Also if your video card are too weak or not proper set up, you will face face this problem. Educate yourself little more before post such a video and claiming things which you not understand. I have same web camera and it's great. Much better then others. But this web camera work better on a high tech videocard. such as nvidia gtx 280 or more. At's why it's not cheap.
I have that exact webcam on my vista machine.. It is the best webcam I ever had.. Very good quality for video conferencing, very high fps it seems.. No lagging..
On the other hand, I have the microsoft "vista" keyboard and mouse set, and it freaks me out!
When I type, the characters sometimes appear on the screen 10 seconds after I typed them.. Sometimes it doesnt even react at all for up to a minute.. Im gonna throw it in the garbage and buy logitech keyboard.. Much better quality I think.
I'm assuming you've installed this webcam "software first, then hardware when prompted" process. This is Logitech's usual steps to install their webcams.
I have the same webcam, and it sucks! When I tried to turn it on a few days ago, I received a message that "LifeCam had to close". Tried and tried. Same.
I tried to leave a video comment but I guess I cut myself short some how. Anyways, I just wanted to say that my web cam (same microsoft model) was doing the exact same thing! It was going on for a while and I don't know what happened but yesterday, I plugged in the web cam and it's working fine right now. It would also work fine on other computers but just not mine. I don't know what I did or what happened but some how it fixed itself. It works fine now...hopefully it'll stay that way.
I've had this exact same camera for a while now and it just started doing exactly whats in this video. I thought it was a software problem. In a way I am soooo glad that I found this video and that you're telling me it's a "hardware" problem and not a software problem. Yeah, $100. for a web cam. Well at least I know it's junk and not to try to figure out why it's screwing up. I'll have to check out another web cam. Thanks for the heads up.
I'm frustrated because my video quality is excellent with my lifecam Vx-3000 but you can hardly hear me. It's so annoying! It's like everyone has a different problem with their cams.
I just picked up the lifecam and it does stink. Software is so buggy and then the quality stinks. I am heading back to wal-mart today to return it and get a logitech. Always loved logitech the last one my dog ate. (No seriously LOL)
well i have a x5tech webcam and i use vista, vista dosnt regonized its own brand name.. but it downloads a lenovo webcam drviers for it (from winupdate) and i get these problems with it, in xp, i dont get any problems and there i use x5tech drivers what they dosnt give for vista 64bit.
so it isnt microsoft hardware problem is a driver or OS problem.
I just bought this camera and am having the same EXACT issue. It's displaying the video exactly like yours. I noticed you posted this on December of 07 and here it is Septemeber of 08 and nothing has been done by Microsoft to fix the glitches. This sucks, I'm returning it today.
well i have a webcam Microsoft Lifecam VX-7000 and is working great.! having no problem.. the onlythink i hate is cose at install procces to optain "next" only option was to install MSN.. and then i optain "next"
I bought Microsoft LifeCam VX-1000. And I can freely say it's an excellent WebCam. It is hi-compatibile with my Windows XP, and have some digital special effects when using Windows Live Messenger. It also have auto color and brightnes balance, but manual focus only. I did not have ANY problems with installing it (from original CD) or using it. I am very sattisfied with my Microsoft product. My recommendation for all users who likes to chat, especialy with Windows Live Messenger.
I have a "Hercules Clasic" a 30€ ,and i don't recommand it eather!
Quality is very good,..
But i can't plug and play, because it doesn't reconnet after you unplug it. "unknown device" haha and after i plug it in about 20times, OR plug it in after i start the "hercules program".. then it works and you can start chatting..
BUT i hate the problem!!!
Even changing drivers didn't work.... so its CRAP!
i own a logitech quickcam pro 9000 and it is the best webcam for the money and it is much more reliable and the audio is clear and the video is spectacular. Microsoft webcams are just horrible.
Although the drivers aren't the greatest, the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 is an extremely good camera for the money. You can record video on up to a 1600x1200 resolution (depending on your CPU). Adjust focus manually or automatically via software. It produces a crisp and well lit image, even in horrible lighting conditions (example: only light source is an LCD monitor) and has all those cool little video effects and 3d avatars.
We have been controlled by the elite. The elite control the banking system, radio, tv,gov, and churches. They have taken our ability to question authority. We are more materialistic because of them. Why would they do this? -> They work for evil forces not wanting us to evolve spiritually. We will not take any material thing when we die, not even our skin color. Knowledge is power.
Oh boy, Microsoft has a big problem, if you upgrade to MS Vista (even in the Ultimate version), you may lose al yor old equip. like web cams, special áudio cards, even some xfx video cards! There´s no drives! Some like the web cam Instante from Creative (i.e.), they don´t have even a plan to develop the drive! It´s the cruel word!
it seems that someone is always better than microsoft when it comes to hardware
logitech > microsoft
sony > microsoft
sorry but i have to say sony is better than microsoft in HARDWARE...not necessarily software (games) but there has been so many problems with the 360 from what i hear.
Well, microsofts operating systems constantly crashing. The benefit of exploding is that you get a newer, a better. While if the OS crashes, you can't exchange it for a better one. (well, except OSX86, linux och freeBSD)
"xbox 360 isnt junk" well if your like the thousands of xbox 360 owners (like myself)who bought the console soon after release and got a dodgy box and had the hasssle of trying to get it fixed. I sent mine to be "fixed" they keep sending me rebuilds that dont work 6 times!! no exagerration.
vx-6000..bad with light.FORGET green screen..Stills terrible.Above 800x600 unless with maybe usb 2 frame rates may freeze.price come down now though.RULE:More megapixel no necc. mean better quality
Chris, I concur on web cam software not being good. I've gotten to where the only software I load for them is the drivers. I control them with the software of whatever application I am using them for. Your right, web cams are viewed by the manufacturers as a cheap add on device. Little do they know that there are people out here willing to pay a bit more for quality.
Apple knows that people are going to be using webcams, due to their apps like Photobooth, iChat AV (which is amazing in Leopard), as well as other webcam uses such as streaming, youtube recording, facebook recording, iMovie recording. There are alot of people on youtube that produce little series' with nothing but a mac and an iSight camera.
it may be rf interference in your house if your using wifi and you have allot of romex electrical outlets that aren't grounded. it may just affect that camera because of the cheep components inside. i don't know im just saying anything is possible. could be a transformer outside your house if you live next to one.
If you want a really good webcam for the price, not top shelf but a great value, get a sony eye toy and install the slightly tweaked drivers. and you can usually find them for under $10
Shouldnt there be a warranty? My NX-6000 kind of acted in that way at first.. I tried unplugging it, reconnecting it and hitting it a little due to frustration. And now it's working again. I totally agree on microsoft webcams being a waste of money. The framerate at 2Mp video is so lousy it's impossible to get a clear feed. Everything's blurred out.
I can further confirm that Lifecams suck. After about 8 or 9 seconds of video playback from a recording the sound changes pitch. It is very noticeable and annoying. I would suggest the Logitech hardware.
idk i have the vx-6000 and vx-1000 & they both works flawlessly with special effects running during live chat on windows live messenger... did you try them on some other pc's?
Have you tried it in linux? Just curious it still could be a software issue. One OS is not a good test. Vista isn't significantly different from XP no matter how much MS claims. IE one OS.
I've been using the iSight for quite sometime and I've been very happy with it's quality. The only downside is that it's embedded into the monitor which leaves little flexibility.
I am an apple user I agree with you but I still have to say that some Microsoft hardware is good Its just the software that sucks. I have a wireless Microsoft mouse that works great.
They cant play games.....im sorry, but pull your head outa ur ass man...have you read game news. EA an some other big game makers are developing for OS X.
Do some research before you make comments like this one.
Chris, I concur on web cam software not being good. I've gotten to where the only software I load for them is the drivers. I control them with the software of whatever application I am using them for. Your right, web cams are viewed by the manufacturers as a cheap add on device. Little do they know that there are people out here willing to pay a bit more for quality.
miwags 4 years ago
Apple knows that people are going to be using webcams, due to their apps like Photobooth, iChat AV (which is amazing in Leopard), as well as other webcam uses such as streaming, youtube recording, facebook recording, iMovie recording. There are alot of people on youtube that produce little series' with nothing but a mac and an iSight camera.

mmmmf microsoft probably wont refund that, i use an eyetoy as my webcam!

Hi Chris Get A HP Starter Kit ''its not reaalrlly a starter kit but go to ebay type in ''webcam'' and click on one with six led lights its great
SyncMaster97 4 years ago
it may be rf interference in your house if your using wifi and you have allot of romex electrical outlets that aren't grounded. it may just affect that camera because of the cheep components inside. i don't know im just saying anything is possible. could be a transformer outside your house if you live next to one.
thanks
Jason

I see a couple of people mention this in the chatroom, but iSight definitely is the best solution both hardware and software.

My Microsoft VX-1000 webcam had problems like this - the video would chop in half, and flash random colours (mostly green) lol
It seems to have fied it self.

If you want a really good webcam for the price, not top shelf but a great value, get a sony eye toy and install the slightly tweaked drivers. and you can usually find them for under $10
MoraiKSC 4 years ago
The eye toy camera doesnt work on windows vista, i have tried it before
Acidtrip1992 4 years ago
ah bummer. wonder if anyone is working on adapting newer drivers or if it's just hosed. seems like it should just be a matter of tweaks though
MoraiKSC 4 years ago
I've used my eye toy on both vista and XP... you just need to find the right drivers

I have a livecam vx-3000 and it works when it feels like it, some times the mic doesn't work or the image keeps freezing

What about using a video camera as a webcam? I'm pretty sure they have the ability to operate as such now.

Quickcams are sweet.
LayzNguyen 4 years ago
I can further confirm that Lifecams suck. After about 8 or 9 seconds of video playback from a recording the sound changes pitch. It is very noticeable and annoying. I would suggest the Logitech hardware.
Nick1814 4 years ago
lol that webcam obviously sucks
bedaman10 4 years ago
umm well microsoft rushes so it has to suck. everyone should know vista, 360, and many more problems concerning microsoft.

idk i have the vx-6000 and vx-1000 & they both works flawlessly with special effects running during live chat on windows live messenger... did you try them on some other pc's?

apple isight is the best by far
immrcheese 4 years ago
Have you tried it in linux? Just curious it still could be a software issue. One OS is not a good test. Vista isn't significantly different from XP no matter how much MS claims. IE one OS.

I've been using the iSight for quite sometime and I've been very happy with it's quality. The only downside is that it's embedded into the monitor which leaves little flexibility.
