@SharsMusic You can get a battery replacement kit for under $10 on eBay, so if power failure is your problem I recommend trying that. Sorry to hear about your phone.

@alejandro7R It won't turn on at all? I've heard iPhone battery failures are common, and you can get a replacement kit for under $10 on eBay, so if power failure is your problem I recommend trying that.

I've had to do this (hard reset) a few times myself. Less so on the 3Gs model than my original iPhone (purchased in June 2007). I use my original iPhone as an iPod Touch these days.

Also, you'll get less lockups on the iPhone if you RESTART your phone after installing/upgrading an application. While a big PITA at times....it really does minimize app lockup.
