No one is suggesting that people aren't bias and the world is totally fair. Blacks know this fact all-to-well. Personally i don't like it when any group is unfair to another. I am not saying all the black soldiers I served with were corrupt and incompetant - that would be an injustice to those I knew who were great soldiers and friends. But there was certainly some very real black racism in the Army. The army had a fierce Asffirmative Action agenda back then as well. If you lived thru it, thru the injustice and double standards as I did, it stays with ya thru the years.
These guys (black NCO's in one particular unit) were angry, ate-up - stupid and just bad soldiers. One of them did manage to get a soldier killed and an investigation ensued and they were all kicked out - and that restored my faith in the Army. I did well in the Army and I had a fair amount of black friends I served with that were good soldiers. I am not stereotyping - but pointing out out that people need to be unbiased and more objective. I don't think Powell was the "hero" some make him.

I am not saying all the black soldiers I served with were corrupt and incompetant - that would be an injustice to those I knew who were great soldiers and friends. But there was certainly some very real black racism in the Army. The army had a fierce Asffirmative Action agenda back then as well. These guys (black NCO's in one particular unit) were angry, ate-up - stupid and just bad soldiers. One of them did manage to get a soldier killed and an investigation ensued and they were all kicked out - and that restored my faith in the Army. I did well in the Army and I had a fair amount of black friends I served with that were good soldiers. I am not stereotyping - but pointing out out that people need to be unbiased and more objective. I don't think Powell was the "hero" some make him.

Their complete incompetence as soldiers and leaders, & the bad things they did were reported by many soldiers in the unit and they were investigated and kicked out - QMP'ed as the military calls it. They were a bad, ignorant, corrupt lot. Forget all the crap Hollywood and the media portrays the military as.

Let me tell you about racism in the army in the 80's. I was the only white sergeant in one unit where the blacks were trying to kill me. Some of these guys were the absolute worst "leaders" - they weren't even good followers. I have served with some very excellent black soldiers. But I saw and felt government-approved racism as a white soldier in my entire military career - the US military is the epitomy of Affirmative Action - I know this first hand.

Colin Powell never achieved anything other than rank.He never won any military battles, never did much as Secretary of State - except resign. I retired from the US Army, as did Powell - no cushy desk job like Powell but Combat Arms all the way. Powell, formerlly known as "the Teflon Man" because his mistakes never stuck to him, was groomed for top office back in the 60's as part of the affirmative action program. The GOP ultimately got what they deserved with their "stand up" man Colin Powell.

Twizzledoc, you missed the point: First - I was enlisted so I could only go as fare as Sergeant Major. Colin went far because he was in a sense a part of the military's Affirmative Action program - they groomed him for top positions since the 1960's largely because he was a minority and the Fed's felt it we needed a minority as a Sr military leader. Of course, you'll think this is bullshit. It's ok - believe what you need to to make your own world spin the way you want it to. I accept that.

No, I GOT the point. Despite ALL of his credentials and accomplishments you TOTALLY discredited this man by implying that he got where he is; is due to his skin color as a "crutch" over his intellect and intelligence. I HIGHLY DOUBT that he got where he did in his sleep. HARD work and brains = RESPECT, POWER, INFLUENCE!!
