@VSophiaV If you harvest in the first year, the next year will have small asparagus shoots. The plant needs the time to develop the root system to produce good size asparagus shoots. Some say that you can harvest some of the bigger shoots the first year provided that you let the small ones grow to become ferns, that will strengthen the root system..
