  • IN MEMORY OF > DOM

  • Whatever you want to say about the U.S. Armed services, the NAVY has the best uniforms, the best traditions, and the best songs. Period.

  • @carltonpowers And their royal brothers in arms across the pond, too. A matchless class of men and women on the seas of the world.

  • @IRememberTheOldDays amen ol brit.

  • @carltonpowers amen indeed

  • I served 27 years in the US Army. Still, this has always been one of my favorite hymns. God bless my brothers and sisters in arms serving in the US Navy.

  • This is the best hymn of all! I thank the Lord Jesus for the wonderful brave heroes--our Navy, our brave SEALS and all who serve. May we ever keep them in our prayers to the one true and living God, the Lord Jesus Christ. Dear Lord, forgive us when we err for even a minute to cover these precious heroes in prayer, when they do so much for us. Thank you, dear SEALS, for giving so much--the ultimate sacrifice. You are true heroes. No one can ever take away the fact that you caught Osama bin Laden!

  • Wonderful rendition of a stirring hymn.

  • My father, World War Two hero in the British Royal Navy, who died young (48 years old) because of what happened to him in the war, loved the Americans, and particularly the US Navy. He also loved this hymn.

  • @speakswahilidammit My Father was a U.S. Navy veteran from WWII. He enlisted during the middle of his senior year in January 1944. He saw action against the Imperial Japanese Forces in the Philippines and Okinawa. He was on the USS Mount McKinley (AGC-7) when the Admiral on board accepted the Japanese surrender near Hiroshima. and when they picked up allied POWs at Nagasaki. He was at tests Able and Baker during Operation Crossroadsat Bikini Atoll. He died on July 3rd 1967. He used to sing this.

  • my father in law went into eternal rest today....roland bisson USN.....may fair winds and following seas bring you home dad

  • THANK YOU US NAVY SEALS FOR TAKING CARE OF OSAMA AND RISKING YOUR LIVES TO SAVE THE WORLD!!!!!

  • On September 11, 2001, I stood in an auditorium with hundreds of my NC State student colleagues, in the first religious service I ever attended, and sang, "...o keep us by Thy watchful care from every peril in the air." That was a line in our modified version of the Navy Hymn. Today, let us raise this hymn in honour of the Navy SEALs who finally brought American justice to Osama bin Laden.

  • Join the Navy to see the world and wide your horizon .May God bless y'all

  • KMW52 - Thank you so much for your kind words. Today is four months and I miss him more than ever and never tire of hearing this hymn. Every time I think of that incident, it gives me a very deep and profound feeling knowing that God was with us at that troublesome time.

  • For my grandfather who served in wwII and passed away jan.18,2011.

  • atfer over 30 years since I served in the Navy this song still brings tears to my eyes whenever I hear it

  • a good friend and navy veteran passed yesterday and your post of this hymn has helped me cope with his passing .

    thank you

  • My beloved husband of 32 years passed away on October 2nd from pancreatic cancer. He served 4 years in the U.S. Navy and always requested that the Navy Hymn be sung at his funeral which I had done. It was so unreal that in the early morning hours before I had him transported to the hospital where he died that evening, this song came on our radio being sung by a male soloist. Absolutely amazing. Truly God's Hand at work. No mere coincidence.

  • @babsy1940 I'm very sorry for your loss. You can be sure it wasn't by chance that the song was played. God never does anything by chance! Thank you for writing your comments and may the Lord keep, protect, and uphold you until you meet Him face to face!

  • December 7, 2010. Remember Pearl Harbor!

  • HOOYAH!!

Thank you to all who have served in the US Navy

  • from the perfect storm

  • May this glorious country be forever blessed with the men and women of the armed servies untill peace reigns supreme! Thank you all who served and their families for your sacrifices

  • I am an ex British sailor, I left in 2006. I love this song and it will be played at my funeral whenever that will be.

To all of our sailors, whatever their nationality, God Bless.

  • those of us who trained in pensacola, who served in combat over vietnam or anywhere the navy has gone in harm's way, will always tear up when this song plays. we heard it as ensigns, and continue to hear it today, though many of us are old now. its meaning runs inexpressibly deep, stirring emotions and memories too strong for words. we shall never forget, as we lift our prayers for all our servicemen & women who give so much today, and those who have given all in faithful service to america!

  • I'm from an old Royal Navy family. This hymn, beautifully sung here, is the most evocative, beautiful & haunting sound I know. I remember my poor Dad singing it in the Tanganyika, before he succumbed to malaria when I was five. He wasn't strong enough to survive the illness, due to injuries in the winter of 1942, when his Royal Navy Corvette was sunk by the Luftwaffe in the North Sea. He & seven others survived from a crew of 68. It caught up with him in Tanganyika. Pictures on my video.

  • Thanks for putting this up. GMC STERN USCG (Ret)

  • God Save our Gay, Lesbian and Straight soldiers, Marines and sailors who defend this country with equal zeal.

  • May He indeed save the sodomists whose actions call only for fire and brimstone.

  • @Thunkful2 Nevertheless, they serve and defend our freedom just the same. Don't forget that God doesn't like premarital sex either, so indeed there will be a lot of brimstone for a lot of people.

  • "Oh God, whose word the stars obey,

Who set the planets on their way,

Who spread'st the vast and starry skies

And made them wondrous to our eyes,

We pray Thy mercy and Thy grace

For those who venture into space...."

  • @beasleej Wow dude, you should have a career in this.

  • Oorah fellow ship mates.

  • Galway Rose 1 : THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY. GOD BLESS YOU ALL FROM A US NAVY WIFE AND MOTHER.

    ANCHORS AWAY WITH GOD.

  • My great-uncle was a sub commander during the Cold War. They sang this song at his funeral. It still brings me to tears.

    God Bless!

  • This is a beautiful and powerful hymn as is our Navy. Thank you for sharing and I personally wish to thank all of those within the military for their sacrifices to preserve our safety and freedom. I salute all of you. God bless America...

  • One of the best versions i have heard of this song.

  • This hymn is so beautiful and every time I hear it it reminds me of my dad. My dad was volunteer lifeboat man and this hymn is played at the lifeboat blessing service.

  • God bless America. We used this hymn at my Grandpa's funeral, who served in the US Navy during WWII. Very powerful

  • This hymn always makes me think of JFK's funeral...they played it at one point when the coffin was being carried into either the cathedral or the capitol. JFK of course was a WWII Navy veteran. A very moving piece of music.

  • @danj1701d It was when he was being carried into the Capitol to lie in state (Sunday, November 24, 1963). And it was played again during the commitment ceremony at Arlington. I always think of JFK's funeral when I hear it, too.

  • I am looking for an mp3 file of this song for my Uncle's funeral next week - all the versions I can find on itunes do not include the "naval aviation" (lord guard and guide the men who fly, etc) verse... please let me know if you have any suggestions

    thank you

  • the one song that has the same effect on me every single time i listen to it.

A chill down my spine, and an overwhelming urge to enlist

  • Everytime I hear this, I remember my Pappy (his favorite song). Mom says to this day, she remembers that DAD's (18yo) pin-point tenor voice came thru all the 200 man US NAVY's Blue Jacket Manual Acapella Choir on CBS Radio every Sunday morning and broadcast all the way around the globe His voice was like Andrea Bocelli/ Josh Groban/ Luciano Pavarotti combined. Soon after he was stationed on the USS Moffett Destroyer Porter Class, Convoy lead ship and USS Laytee flattop, during WW2.

  • Retired Mustang SWO here.. brings a tear to my eye every time

  • haze gray and under way...well done

  • Great, unfortunately usually only here the hymn at funerals.

    Being 25 years old.

    Of course.

  • @ohhnoo09

that is true my father's is an example

  • Thanks for posting this video from a Navy Vet and Coast Guard Retiree.

  • Thanks, from a Navy vet.

  • Beautiful, beautiful hymn! I first heard this song in the 1997 film "Titanic" and have never since forgotten it. I consider myself a bit of a Titanic history buff and have read that this hymn was sung by the passengers aboard the ship in reality. I am also the daughter of a Navy man, so this song has double meaning to me. Thank you for sharing this beautiful rendition!

  • @RETROGEMS

The movie which the song ever been played in should be "Crimson Tide" but "Titanic" as the submarine group called "Dive! Dive!". FYI.

  • How Beautiful...(5*) Sherry

Thank you so much Paul, I so agree with dlpine71

  • @89murph :D good to see you woke up :)

  • THANK YOU for posting this song my dad was in the Navy

  • I know that the last verse is intended for Navy Pilots, but I went to a wedding that had this hymn and honored a family member who was in the Air Force with this verse, So Happy birthday Air Force!

  • BillyB8, forgive the ignorance of some of use across the pond.. but was is a "Kirks"?

  • A kirk is a church. It is a term most often heard in Scotland.

  • Written by William Whitelaw in the 1800s, an English clergyman who would travel to the US in later life. A hymn of such beauty, it brings tears to my eyes whenever i hear it. Every Remembrance sunday (sunday closest to November 11) we sing it at my parish church in remembrance of those who died fighting to feed and protect Britain in the wars of the past. He wrote it for all people, everywhere in the world, who are still claimed by the sea for the death of brave sailors and innocent passengers

  • William Whiting actually lol! All the other facts are correct though!

  • In the UK this is known as the mariners hymn. As much for our lost merchant seamen as for our lost navy sailors.

All our coastal kirks sing it regularly. As we lose crews every season.

  • We sang this at Church every Sunday when I was at Pensacola in Aviation Officer Candidate School in 1967. It spoke volumes then just as it still does. I'll be listening to this often.

  • Thank you so much for posting the Navy Hymn. This is the most glorious rendition of "Eternal Father, Strong to Save" I believe I've ever heard. I'm married to a 30+ year US Navy Master Chief Petty Officer and I can tell you, there are never enough thanks for all those who have served and are serving presently in any branh of the US military. We owe them so much for all they have and are sacrificing for this nation. Blessings on all from a grateful Navy wife.

  • @BabsERNurse Long serving navy wives, too!

  • I am a SrA in the Air Force, but love this song! Semper Fidelis!

  • This hymn is not just for the Navy and sailors all, but also Marines, b/c we are soldiers of the Sea...

  • oorah

  • Although I wasn't in the Navy I love this song. Semper Fi!

  • 220 souls have perished on an Air France flight in an angry, stormy Atlantic Ocean. The U.S. Navy, and the Brazilian and French naval and air forces, have risen to the occasion. We owe so much to our people in uniform.

  • I remember singing this hymn while at Navy basic training back in 1980. Thank you for posting it!

  • GOD BLESS THE GLORIOUS UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!! *Salutes*

  • thankyou for posting this. It's so wonderful to hear the "True Words" of the Navy Hymn. Semper Gumby/ Bravo Zulu/ Semper Fidelis!

  • My Father, a World War Two US Navy veteran, totally disabled in his service to his Country at age 18, died 1 May 2009. This hymn will be played at his funeral on 9 May 2009. Please remember him in your prayers this night and every night.

  • Godbless you and your family. Thank you for your Father's service. God bless your Father for walking "point" for us.

  • God bless your dad. This Hymn is so moving. My favorite. I will be thinking of him on the 9th and wish I was there to hear the Hymn. He gave so much , so young. John

  • i got a military parade today (9 in the morning)...ill think of ur dad, and all the others who served for right and freedom....

    god bless 'em all

  • Your fathers bravery will be remembered.

  • God bless Your family. We sleep in peace at night knowing men like your father keep us safe.

  • Your father will be in my prayers this night, and shall duefully be honoured by me as are so many other TRUE heroes. God bless your father, and God bless your soul.

  • I absolutely love this song. But the feelings are bittersweet, it's a beautiful piece but it is a solemn reminder of brothers lost at sea...

  • We ARE still a christian nation despite what the liberal media tells us....

  • Amen to that.

  • No we are a diverse country made up of many different culture and religions...get used to it because that is just the way it is...so welcome to the 21st century.

  • fail. ^

  • Long live all our sailors which ever nationality they may be. Ive lost so many friends to the sea

  • hi I'm 11 and i think is a great song and we have to sing it for our play Noye's Fludde (Noah's Flood) but i think one of the verses are not in there this might be different but i still like it
