but if the kid bought other stuff then yeah I think the manager should've just reminded him that he also ate a doughnut. I'm just wondering if they called the cops first or if the kid refused to pay...
Except... Stealing a donut IS misdemeanor shoplifting. If you haven't paid for it, don't eat it. That's how it works. The $200 fine isn't paying for the donut, it pays for the law enforcement call. It does sound a bit like the owner had it out for him. Maybe it wasn't the first time. How is that different than pocketing anything else? Misdemeanor is exactly the right charge.
i think the reason the cops showed up is because 79 cents were lost but the state gov is gettin 210 easy bucks which will inevitably trickle down to the police force. cops do easy job, gov gets money, market owner gets his and students learns his lesson. it might be excessive but i mean stealing is stealing. rather than callin cops why not say hey you gonna pay for that donut?
If they saw him eat it and pay for other items, they should have charged him. If they think he really stole it they should have banned him. Calling the cops is a bit excessive. The guy is totally in the wrong though for eating items before paying. If you haven't payed for it yet it's not yours.
Yea, Ana and John have some good commentary synergy. I really like it. With that said....Jayar and Ana held their own different style...you guys should consider that.
@ChibiMiddleFinger how did he even notice the guy ate the donut? If he knew the whole time it's a dick move he didn't ask him to pay for it while he was paying for the other things or on the way out.
Letting the kid go would set a dangerous precedent for more serious thefts. Of course, I don't think the fine should be so disproportionate to the value of the stolen goods (26,582%!), but the real damage is not that a doughnut was stolen, but rather that a legal principle had been violated.
uh def dont agree with like.. the 200 fine.. think thats a little weird, i think they should just give the guy his dollar, but kid needs to pay for the fucking donut, you're not cute eating a donut that other people have to pay money for, i dont blame that owner for being pissed off, what if you had your own shop and some little college kid strolls in and steals your products without paying, NO! fuck you, pay for that shit, i dont care if its a dollar, its out of respect, so he lost his temper
@dmvazli and called the cops, well if he can't beat the kid over the head to get his point across how the hell else is he going to, the kid does not deserve charges against him though, no fucking way, just give the guy his dollar, and if you dont have it, fucking leave before the cops show up idiot
Why the hell didn't the kid just pay the 79 cents when he was confronted is what I want to know...
I don't have enough info to say wether or not he was guilty.
I snack & drink a soda & what not as I shop too. Like the dude in the vid said through, I have the box and/or the can to pay when I get to the checkout.
This story is just weird...who the hell eats stuff off the shelves while shopping? I'm almost always on the side of tyt but you missed me on this one. If I owned a store and someone came in and ate the food off my shelves I'd be pissed even if they did come up to pay for it later. The student created and awkward fucked up situation. Buy your donut then it eat...when the fuck did those rules change?
Yeah not guilty... ive done this a few times, unintentionally. I mean.. HE PAID FOR EVERYTHING ELSE. And forgot a donut.. this idiot store owner GUARANTEEABLY cost himself more than that 79 cent donut in future earnings.
ok first of all who the hell goes into a grocery store sees a donut and eats it before paying for it wth dont get me wrong its really unfair that he has to now pay 210 dollars for this and wasted the city resources but come on u dont go into store and eat something before u pay
Anyways, I really hope the student takes this to court, because that's ridiculous. If anything, they will usually make you an offer before you actually see the judge, such as donating $50 to a homeless shelter or food bank and they'll drop the charge. Atleast that way he doesn't have this on his criminal record and he's helping a good cause.
Same thing happened with my dad and a tropicana twister... we had to go to court and fight it! lol what a complete WASTE of tax payers money that paid for the police to show up and the courts time. Seriously, if you see someone eat/drink something in the store, kindly ask them to pay for it. These people think they're doing society a favor by calling the cops, as if they could one day rob a bank... get a grip.
sorry but what kind of behaviour is this? Eating at a store before paying it? You pay for it, then you it eat. It's not a restaurant! And not paying is shoplifting, no matter how small the amount. Sincerely, an also often hungry college student.
I was grocery shopping one time and I picked up a book that I was going to buy as well. I was holding the book instead of putting in the cart. I paid for my food and left. 79 cents? Why not just charge him like 10$ or less. No need for more college debt. And Btw John, LOVE Brown Sugar ;). You're a great addition to TYT! You're really calm and funny at the same time, and are very intelligent!
So the people who support "The Law is the Law"..... Are you gonna continue supporting the law when the NDAA BITES YOUR ASS, BECAUSE IT IS NOW THE LAW? Are you gonna respect the law if you are caught with POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA?
I say Zach O'Dell should be fined, because in my opinion he's the sort of guy that does this on a regular basis and doesn't give a damn about it. if you drink/eat something and keep its package to pay later is fine, but when u eat a doughnut u gotta at least keep a paper bag with u to make sure u don't forget to pay later. In my opinion Zach does this kind of action on regular basis but he got caught this time.
but that's the point, we will never know if he did it on purpose or if it was a mistake, it's like these situation where the law comes in, and Anna, 19 yr is young, comeon, the people who over throw Mubarak in Egypt and and got killed and shot by the police where 19 and 20 yr old, so age means nothing these days, 19 yr old are who threw el-Deen out of Tunis, 19 and 20 yr joined the resistance and removed Ghadafi, i hate it when people try to justify an issue with age.
Sorry but too many have no idea about how many 79 cent "oops I forgot" happens. Run a store for a year and see how fast it gets to you, and depending on markup the owner may have to sell alot at cost to recoup that loss then have that happen 10+ times in a day and now the have to sell more at cost to recoup etc. As far the eating before paying, again annoying as often "oops I forgot my wallet or my debit card won't work"...etc.
unlikely that the owner didn't ask him to pay before calling cops.
When I was a kid, there was a cashier at my local grocery store who would actually refuse our money when either I or my mother tried to pay for my doughnuts. :)
i agree that the cops didn't need to come for this kind of situation, but still. it's one of my peeves when people start opening things and eat or drink it before they even pay for it. it happened a couple of times when I was working in a Rite Aid. it's like, what if you forgot to bring money with you or you didn't have enough? can't just wait till you pay for it? -_-
Okay. Maybe -- just maybe he ate the donut and walked out and just "forgot" to pay. On the other hand, this isn't a restaurant. It's a market. You're not supposed to be walking down the aisles and taking food off the shelves and eating it as you go, notwithstanding that a lot of people do it.
This isn't some poor starving waif. This is a college kid who shoplifted - most likely one of many doing exactly the same thing. And if a frustrated store owner opts to press charges, I'm not crying.
@ooMONKEYoo The problem wasn't that they didn't get in jail for breaking the law, it was because there weren't any laws in the area to begin with. You should read up on the deregulation acts to get a clear understanding of what's going on.
@ScreamingTc Oh so it isn't theft if the value of the item is 79 cents or less. Great!... Problem ana's doing is that she implies that the small value of the item some how makes it okay to steal.
All I got to say is wow. Charged for misdemeanour shopping lifting and a $200 for stealing a 79 cent doughnut... And now its going to go on his permeant record..
When I was 17 I went to the gas station paid for $20 in gas the attendant set the pump for $25 when I looked at the meter it said $22 and change I imediately stoped and started to get in my car the attendant yells over the speaker for me to go & pay for the rest of the gas I did not pay I had no more $ so i drove away 3 blocks away i get arrested for stealing gas so i spent 3 days in jail got a $150 dollar fine and paid restitutuin to the gas station
This is SO not a liberty thing, as the hosts try to position it - the guy was being an asshole or tried to show off. Don't be a cunt and the cops will not charge 200$ for a fukkken stolen doughnut. Simple as that.
The guy who own the store down my street is such a tightass because he called the cops on this kid who accidentally stole a pack of gum. The kid said, I put it in my pocket because it was cold (it was snowing) and when the cops arrived they yelled at the store owner instead of the kid. People are just so goddamn greedy.
Krispy Kreme in the thumbnail left of Ana, But i want to here a story of a fat person rob a Krispy Kreme and steal like 500 donuts no money just donuts
In Canada, a cop can drop the charges I've they feel it's frivolous...
The cop has to weigh what the tax payers would have to pay against running the assailant threw court and it's usually based on wether they're repeat offenders
I Live in London. I accidentally picked up and used my girlfriends Oyster Card (London travel pass) instead of my own (we were both entitled to free travel as college students), I got on a bus, explained to the inspector what had happened when I realised my mistake, received a Court Summons, wrote a letter of explanation (ignored), and then had to pay £100 (+£2 bus fare) to avoid going to court. Fuck petty law enforcement shitting on poor people.
The real question is was he even confronted by the store owner about this before calling the cops? If so why didn't he pay for it when he was informed OR why didn't the store owner ask him first?
People who eat things inside the store are fucking crazy, that shit is completely unacceptable here in the first world, I can't believe that even (seemingly) normal people like John eat things inside the store before paying for them.
I'm sure the police have better things to do, but at the same time... wouldn't the fine pay for the resources used to arrive on the scene? Not sure how fines get processed, but if they go towards the departments funds, I'm a little less irked by the story. Still, i'm sure 79 cents isn't worth calling the police over.
@tytuniversity I'm severely disappointed in those cops I think they didn't fulfill their moral obligation to shoot that college students dog. Now some might argue it wasn't their legal obligation to do so even if they should have I think it's bullocks
I've accidentally walked out of a couple stores with very small items on accident, or have forgotten to pay for some things before, and there was no harm done, ultimately. He should only have to pay the 79 cents. We've all done shit like this absentmindedly. This store will most likely lose lots of business over this, and rightfully so. Fuck you for throwing a fit over 79 cents. And fuck all of you people who simply say "law is the law" and "he deserved it."
@14Schofield Yeah, stealing is against the law, but I just wish more people would see how nuanced the whole thing actually is, instead of viewing it as so black and white. It bothers the shit out of me when people thinking something like accidentally absentmindedly eating a doughnut is just as bad as breaking into someone's car, hot wiring it, then driving off.
If someone steal something and you ask for help thats not a waste of resources. The fine was more than the cost for going there and if the kid forgot i feel bad for him n the store owner should have let him pay later. But dont hate on some guy cuz he didn't want his stuff to get stolen.
@iamsean90 Wow, ever heard of perspective? No? Let me explain it to you. He didnt intentionally, and maliciously rob the store. He had a memory lapse. Simple as that. This case would have been thrown out 50 years ago and the cop and store owner would have been fined for wasting the courts time. Capitalism causes this. Profit motive causes behavior like this. The shop owner should be fined for placing a false call.
@DaBamBamMan The EVIL profit motive causes this ooooo. There wouldn't be a doughnut if it wasnt for the EVIL profit motive, in fact the computer your typing your nonsense comments on was made for profit & youtube is for profit. Like i said if the kid forgot than the store owner should let him pay. You forget that until purchase is made that's the store owner's property & he has a lawful right to protect it. I never understood eating things in the store you fatasses really cant wait?
I am not saying $200 is right amount, but you have to charge at least $100 otherwise teenagers would do it. I know it stinks, but I have seen the non-payment for food, Starbuck's drink, and school cafeteria happen too many times in college to let it slide.
It's his responsibility. I'm gonna sound like a hardass, but I think he needs to pay it back. Now, $200 may be excessive, but I'm not sure. I agree that many other people get off for much larger crimes and that is what needs to be looked at.
Really Ana? Who the fuck does that? perhaps this is an American thing, the last thing to cross my mind is to eat something at a supermarket before I pay for it. BTW, here's the solution to this kid who ate the donut and walked out without paying for it: Ban him from the store for a year.
Kid had it coming. Thanks TYT for another "fuck the system". But seriously, that shops probably gonna lose a nice chunk of business from College students
I understand that is was so cheap but if the shopowner just allows people to eat the food without paying then the shopowner loses profit and it will hurt him. We also can not assume that all college students are poor just because a lot of them are. And if he is so poor that it will hurt him to pay .79 cents for a fucking donut then he should be on financial aid and government assistance.
There is a chance that he might have forgot, but that doesn't excuse him from punishment. If I was the owner I would have just banned him so that he wouldn't make it a habit . Calling the cops is a waste of resources and time.
Well I could understand a business owner wanting to put an end to people stealing from your store. I bet that person had been stealing from the store often, and not just that 1 doughnut. It is a waste of resources and people who steal more through companies should be charged more than they are now. The whole situation stinks but the owner has the right to press charges to anyone who steals from them. It will also send a message to everyone around not to steal from that store.
How many donuts can someone steal before you can called the cops. If everyone eats one without paying how much does the store owner loses? Stealing is a crime period, however it should be discuss if the punishment fits the crime, and in this case it does not.
If its a 79 cents donut, or sandwich, it doesnt mather... if your hungry in the store and you decide to eat something while shopping, its your responsability to remember it.
It's not like he was a starving homeless, its a college student who has money and arguably a brain, he just wanted a freebie.
Now he learned his lesson, and so will his children, and its a example set for others who read/hear about this.
@TheSydrek wrong, it IS your responsibility as an employee to as you said "babysit" each customer, 1 for customer service and 2 make sure no one is stealing. you definitely will not work in my store...
I mean they have to set an example...
but if the kid bought other stuff then yeah I think the manager should've just reminded him that he also ate a doughnut. I'm just wondering if they called the cops first or if the kid refused to pay...

DemonWithAHumanHeart 1 month ago
i agree that the cops didn't need to come for this kind of situation, but still. it's one of my peeves when people start opening things and eat or drink it before they even pay for it. it happened a couple of times when I was working in a Rite Aid. it's like, what if you forgot to bring money with you or you didn't have enough? can't just wait till you pay for it? -_-
DumplingzOwO 1 month ago

@TvvoTr3es It is theft, but it's whether it was intended theft or not, and $200 is a little extreme for eating a doughnut.

14Schofield 1 month ago

DaBamBamMan 1 month ago
@DaBamBamMan The EVIL profit motive causes this ooooo. There wouldn't be a doughnut if it wasnt for the EVIL profit motive, in fact the computer your typing your nonsense comments on was made for profit & youtube is for profit. Like i said if the kid forgot than the store owner should let him pay. You forget that until purchase is made that's the store owner's property & he has a lawful right to protect it. I never understood eating things in the store you fatasses really cant wait?
iamsean90 1 month ago 2
Theft is theft, it doesn't matter if it's 79 cents or 79 dollars. Next time he will not forget, it's an important lessen.

I am not saying $200 is right amount, but you have to charge at least $100 otherwise teenagers would do it. I know it stinks, but I have seen the non-payment for food, Starbuck's drink, and school cafeteria happen too many times in college to let it slide.
Stamps600 1 month ago in playlist Uploaded videos
It's his responsibility. I'm gonna sound like a hardass, but I think he needs to pay it back. Now, $200 may be excessive, but I'm not sure. I agree that many other people get off for much larger crimes and that is what needs to be looked at.
