It is neither the latest/youngest nor the highest kata to be mastered, but might vary depending on the ryu learned.
Btw. It's not on me Grandmaster to criticize Kanazawa-san, but.... we at the DJKB (German branch of JKA) won't have neko ashi dachi but zenkutsu dachi instead at the beginning. Is it the same with you guys out there?
@1995leonhard That's the problem with being a 7th Kyu, you think you've ever "learned" a kata. You might be able to copy out the movements, however you will never have mastered this Kata.
I studied with a marine combat instructor back in the 70s who had many black belts. We studied aikijutsu and karate all for self defense applications, not sport. When it came to doing kata, he showed us super 8 films of Kancho Kanazawa because to my sensei, Kanazawa was close to perfection. I also totally agree that most forms of sport karate these days are missing out on what kata has to offer. That is, everything! It took me many years to find the truth and how to see it clearly. Oss sfkcbf!
I have been involved with Shotokan & JKA karate for half a century, have studied in the past with 14 Japanese masters, lived with Master Kanazawa in London; and I still single him out for special respect and admiration, not only as a karateka, but also for his character. To this day, I have his portrait on my office wall. In some ways, Wankan became my favorite kata in later years, for I found many satisfying subtleties in it. Too many young karateka like Kumite but miss the value of kata.
i used to like kata alot..kinda still do but i found i was better at kumite so i kinda prefer kumite..i guess ur right though how alot of young people prefer kumite more :S i still like kata hehe
I trained long enough to realize the true value of kata (something many karateka miss), and that included adding further insight and skill into kumite. In later years, I did not need to expend much physical energy in kumite or to prolong the engagements because of having developed sensitivity to the opponents' capabilites and intentions and because I always practiced kata with an opponent in mind.
@irishkrim I could suggest the same point about Wankan as I did concerning the Schumann Fantasia to a 19-year-old concert pianist: when you are twice or three times your current age, you will do it differently.
Kata are not limited to particular Dans. Each kata, every kata, is a complete fighting system. From white to black belt, the same kata can be taught, and as one advances, one learns more applications, and comes to truly understand the kata. And as you do you begin to unlock the hidden moves and subtle techniques. A basic technique BECOMES a master technique when it is done with perfect precision and speed. And so a master using the same move as a student may seem to be doing a different move.
Why people hate tadashi and lloyd knight. mr. knight promoted and sold his dojo in Conneticut to mr. borbon. Borbon started Shorin ryu at age 29 and now at present he is renshi? After arriving in California, knight back stab Sensei Rabago to gain control and now he has 3 McDojos in Temecula and more coming. When money is involve in Budo, people get greedy.
I will hunt Knight down and Challenge him, if he does not except...Ill beat him any way....knowing he runs a mcdojo he will taek the challenge not wanting to lose face nor money.
Its incredible how money can ruin an excellent dojo and lead even the most excellent dojos to open many McDojos. It happend to my own dojo in 2004(ish) and left us with no Dojo for some time. :-(
Here is a formula you don't want to learn the hard way.
(disagreements/Karatejitsu) E (Money x Politics)^(arguments) + (Insruction via Kohai Blackbelts - Proper Deshi Supervision) = Broken Main Dojo - True Budo via Deshi = Orphaned KarateKa - any Dojos = broken spirits
orbelus, Thank you so much for this great video. We love Kanazawa sensei. If you see him, tell him we send our regards and respect. I do not blame people for not hating tadashi, he is a no good trickster! He ruined Shorin Ryu!
I gree 07ATF, How is your unit doing? Did you guys get your new side arms? Anyway, Kanazawa sensei is a highly respected master and a great man. I love watching his katas with very good focus. tadashi"can't act"yamashita can learn a lot from this awesome man. I hate tadashi and what he is doing with (Kobayashi)Shorin-Ryu. They are starting to call it yamashita shorin ryu. They should call it Cobra Kai with all the damn patches and colored uniforms.
This man is amazing! This guy is way better than Tadshi"hollywood"Yamashita. Tadashi should learn form this guy. I love the simple white uniform. Tadashi have at least 5 different uniforms and 6 to 7 seven frigin patches. How can you parctive with all those damn patches! They look like Taekwondo school
07ATF, you wanted to say "how can you practice with all those damn patches!" I understand brother, long night on duty and PT is coming up. You better get ready. KANAZAWA is the best! Thank you for posting this great video!

What do you mean by "final" kata?
It is neither the latest/youngest nor the highest kata to be mastered, but might vary depending on the ryu learned.
