power lifting is different than regular weight lifting. Power lifting is focused on getting the max amount of weight physically possible, and with out the boards he would probally drop it and break his sternum.

What ever happened to the real deal? A real bench is with a pause and no shirt. Show me this and I will be impressed. That is correct, the piece of wood is for training purposes. By putting the piece of wood in there, your are strengthening the upper arms/part of our body. By removing the block of wood gradually, the bar will come down more and therefore you start using your lower arms more and with the added strength of the upper arms... who knows how much more you can!
