  • power lifting is different than regular weight lifting. Power lifting is focused on getting the max amount of weight physically possible, and with out the boards he would probally drop it and break his sternum.

  • I am seeing this more and more at the gym, Am I an old dog, doing a full range of motion? Cause I don't know of any competition where they put a piece of wood on your chest. What ever happened to the real deal? A real bench is with a pause and no shirt. Show me this and I will be impressed. I am sure this guy is way stronger than the average joe, But I have to see the real deal. God bless and no insult intended.

  • Its powerlifting which over time the boards become less and before you know it.He will be full benching that weight with out boards,Its a process i guess.

  • That is correct, the piece of wood is for training purposes. By putting the piece of wood in there, your are strengthening the upper arms/part of our body. By removing the block of wood gradually, the bar will come down more and therefore you start using your lower arms more and with the added strength of the upper arms... who knows how much more you can!

  • Powerlifting training exercise. That way you can do more than your 1 rep max, and for reps. It works the triceps harder. This and presses with chains help to strengthen the triceps. Check out Westside Barbell, one of the techniques they use.
