I have this exact guitar...I bought it in 1988 for $125 out of the Recycler Newspaper in Granada Hills CA. Sold my 1979 Les Paul and kept this.
It was fun when nothing was valuable...just us fans were flipping guitars, cars and motorcycles...never paid more than $850 for a Bonneville650. I miss the old days. Where did all the rest of you newbies come from?????
it's interesting as you give every guitar a story connected to it, and thats what I really like to hear, so now I am working out you work in a music store, sorry if I seem a little slow off the blocks
hola.
wo had one like it but it was stolen right before opening for Eddie monies in hollister and its sister an f hole a drummer Bill Krammer got it for me, thats when KSJO use too do the battle of the bands,e they stole my guitar and my new color tv. I never pick up the electric guitar again, yesterday some I think on craiglist was selling one the top part was damage,I love that guitar it was with me on a lot of road trips ,I can't stop crying just even tho I can efford one ever again am happy 4 U
@triclops8 I'm not positive, but I think they're Super 70s (guitar was made Jan of 1980). The Ibanez Collector's Forum would know better than I would. I highly recommend them for getting expert knowledge on vintage Ibanez guitars.
Yes they are the Flying Finger Super 80 pick-ups, Super 70's were only used in the AR50 the budget end of the AR range, but still a very, very worthy axe.
The cool thing for the guy who traded the ar300 for the strat is the Japan Strats were made at Fuji Gen the same place the Ar300 was made so he got a good one. I'd still rather have the AR. Nice axe
that thing is sweet man. so far i only have one kinda vintage ibanez, a dt50fr destroyer. the ebony fret board and that sunburst looks awesome. i totally want a strat but i'd hold onto that thing for dear life! my westone can do all the same noises as that what with the coil tapping and phase gimmick but it's weird because it's pretty much a purpose built 80's metal guitar. do the new versions have all that cool crap?
@FatGuyWithAKatana I'm not sure if the new Artists offer the switching like these old ones, but I can't locate it on their website. It appears that the Artists like this one are no longer offered. They were using a Korean version for a while, but their '77-'82 was probably their best stuff. And I can't believe that guy didn't just scrape up the money to buy a Strat. He took a guitar that sold for $299..and probably cost the owners $175. I bought it from them for $350 a week later.
@PixxyLixxx the modern version of this one would be the arx series and i can't see anything that says it has coil tapping and all the cool crap, think i'll just have to add this thing to my list of vintage ibanez's to look for. the new ones have a quilted maple top but i like the looks of yours better.
@proxy69 I don't know of a way to post photos on YouTube, but the Ibanez site has three guitars that use the exact same nut. The two George Benson models and the Scofield model all use the same bone/brass nut. I'd post a link but YT doesn't allow URLs in the comments.
@geoff5665 NO WAY! Hehehe....I've been going down Memory Lane lately, recalling all the guitars I never should have sold. I'm sure I'd regret selling the second it left my hands. Did you see the "Grail" 2675 LP on ebay right now? Up to $3750 and Reserve Not Met. Should get interesting....
@ersopa85 I see them on eBay once in a while. I also see them sometimes on Craig's List. They don't make these anymore, so you'll have to find a used one. Ibanez makes one that looks similar, but they're made in Korea now. For a Japanese one like the one in the video, you really have to get one made in the late 70s/early 80s.
This is a fantastic instrument. I always wanted one but could never find one, let alone a decent one. I bought a Yam SG2000 instead which I suppose is in the same class as this (In other words, one level above a Gibson LP Standard! - Ouch, tin hat on!)
@sambenenge HA! Yes, GAS is a serious affliction that can cause marital discord. Great news on the new axe. You'll have to post a video of it! I just put that guitar back into the main rotation, so I understand your obsession. Did the one you get have the coil splits and phase reverse switches? That seems to be only on certain models.
@Donegaldan Oh yeah, very high quality. This was their answer to the Les Paul Custom, so they really focused on quality to try and break out of the "budget brand" reputation they got during their earlier years. I'd say they succeeded.
Yes I too though Ibanez and Yamaha studio lord Guitars (LP) were cheap copies, but, I was wrong.
They are well made. Fender Japan and Tokai also have a great reputation (same factory). Stevie Vai is obviously impressed by Ibanez, which are made in Nagoya , Japan. Enjoy your playing
Hey, hey,..oooh,...love your play, and you to radiate sympathy, so love your vids,....this vid, cant' believe it, so good work and my soul cant get enough from,...you are great player,...and so the my wa to find you, i've got a Ibanez 2622, build in 1978, think, the first with activity electronic on market, so my information, a hard beast in powersound and i love she to play,..many thx to you,...i hope to see more from you,..and sry for my bad english,..;)
Great guitar, nice playing as well. I have a 1980 Black AR50 (the plain model) that I bought new and seldom play. I was thinking of selling it also. They are super guitars, great action and tons of sustain. Heavy though as your shoulder will soon tell you!
xD!! Nice! For some reason this really made my day xD Thanks for making this video man, I was trying to do some research on this series line up. They have one but it's purple. They said amethyst or summin along the lines. But its not in bad shape, So it's that or a 60's road worn strat. =/ Any advice?
@PookieBearAttack I'm not familiar with a purple one. Sunburst and cream are the two colors I see out there the most. Make sure it's an older Japanese one; the newer Korean ones are nice, but not AS nice. I do love the 60s Strat, so that would be a tough choice. The tone is so different between those models, it's hard to compare. I might give the Ibanez the edge for versatility (especially if it has the splitter/phase switch).
Have to say - great tone on this! I think you mention that this you are using a VOX modeller . . if so, what settings are you using? Worth knowing, but then again, would need to have your rather nice touch. Thnks for posting this.
@straylight99 Thanks! Actually, I'm fairly sure that is Guitar Rig 3 with the Hi-Watt amp simulator and the ProCo Rat simulator. It's hard to check the patch because I did a clean install of Windows 7 recently and just installed Guitar Rig 4 without installing 3 first. Apparently, they don't have that patch in this release, which is pretty dumb for a software company to not include prior patches in new versions. Oh well. But I remember Hi-Watt and Rat; that rings a bell.
I just got a 78 with Grover tuners, the electrics (preamp) taken out and the pickups replaced, and the Brass Bone nut replaced. Also been refretted but still, i love this guitar, just got it PLEK'd
@PixxyLixxx dude, its awesome. It had been refretted wtih dunlop 6100 frets, and they were really freaking high. and the PLEK totally straightened that out. It's really easy to get stuff PLEK'd here in California, cus I live in Sacramento, and the store I work for is the only store here from San Fran to something like Nashville. But this thing just plays like butter now.
@457z I had a Roadstar II as well. A black one from 1983. Strat-ish style with matte pickguard. I really have to compile a list of all the guitars that have floated through my life...at least a couple dozen, I'm sure.
Hey are you gonna join the Ibanez head on Facebook? we need more Ibanez lovers..
This guitar is really pretty to look at, the vioin finish, and I love the metal pickups w/no screwheads, may I ask how much you pay for it in 1982? very nice
@wisesatyr72 Yeah, I'll try to find you on FB. I see an "official" one, is that it? Ok, are you sitting down? I paid $350 for it in 1994. After getting the trade-in, the owners put the axe on the floor for $499. I inquired about it and they did NOT want to sell it to me (they knew they had to lower the price - I had been working there since '85). After a little browbeating, I finally got it out of them. I'm glad I remained persistent!
@PixxyLixxx yeah my name on there is David Allen, look for Ibanez Heads by Pattric Langley.. hell ya, thats the most Id pay for any guitar and thats the way it should be..So you work fpr a guitar store and the store was issued at 1984 but the store had it since 1994? Yeah Ibanez is pricey, Ive seen one brand new for $750 and that was like marked down 2008 ..and those vintage 1980 ibanez are the best w/those Ibanez made pickups, your guitar looks brand new and its one of the kind, enjoy!
These are such great guitars. I had a '78 that was one step down from yours. It had dot inlays and no switches for coil tap and phase. It had the locking tuners though, and the bone/brass nut. My only complaint is that the neck was a little chubby -- but nothing you couldn't get used to. I love the way the gold wears off the hardware to reveal the nickel beneath. It keeps the gold from being totally gaudy but there's still enough left to looks nice against the tea burst.
@1Doz I agree about the neck. It is slightly chubby compared to my Strats and RG560, but nothing, like you say, that you can't get used to. What amazes me about the guitar is the range of sounds. The 3-way switches really open up the sonic possibilities of that thing! And it's easy on the eyes.....that's for sure.
@PixxyLixxx Absolutely. I love the sunbursts on these guitars. Ibanez called it a "violin burst'. It's less candy red than a Gibson cherry sunburst but not as black/brown as a tobacco or honey burst. It's right in between -- a perfect "ice tea" burst as they say nowadays. The upper models have multi-ply binding but I like the single binding of the low and mid models. They also have a 22 fret neck (versus the upper models' 24) which gives correct Gibson pickup spacing.
I swapped a '68 Gibson SG Standard for one of these in 1981, never regretted it for a second. Sold it 15 years ago, I've regretted that ever since! You've got me wanting to get another one.
Ha! Yeah, those guitars have that effect. They're out there, but you have to look around for the best deal. I want most of my old guitars back!! (and a few amps, too!!)
PixxiyLixxx, I have a question, are you sure that is an '82 ? it has all the indications of a 79/80 Artist model 2619. It has Super 80 pup's, half bone/brass nut, locking Velve tuners, shallow heel and pearl tuners, everything you would expect from a 2619.
On the back of the headstock is the serial # there will be a letter first then the first 2 numbers are the year of manufacture, does it have something like H79XXXX or maybe J80XXXX if it is an '82 it will have X82XXXX, please confirm
Yep that is a January 1980, it is either a transitional AR300AV model or a 2619AV, it is very hard to say but it has all the features of the earlier 2619, I have 4x 79/80's Artists and they are the best instruments ever, PixLix join up to Ibanez Collectors World forum and learn more about your lovely instrument.
Thanks! The "amp" is a software emulation called "Guitar Rig" by Native Instruments. I run the guitar into the computer and then out to a mixer, combine it with the mic audio and then run a line to the videocam. There's no live miking of the amp, just my voice; the amp sound is direct.
Thanks for the kind words. You are definitely correct: I'm having lots of fun rediscovering that guitar. I brought it to a jam this past Saturday night and I got a lot of great compliments on it. I hear you on wishing you could get back a guitar that you sold. There's like a dozen guitars I wish I never sold. A 1973 Strat, a 1978 Ibanez Les Paul Custom, a 1981 The Strat, a 1987 green JEM 777 signed by Steve Vai with a limited release of 777 copies.....that one really hurts....
Thanks for the demo. If you get a chance, can you do a version with less processing? I would love to hear the distinction between the various pup settings. Thanks!
@nickthenail Thanks for the comments. Sorry about the "grease." I'm just so used to that heavily processed sound. I'll clean it up a bit and post a response.
Yeah! Sweet guitar! I have a special place in my heart for early 80s Ibanez axes (much more than the late 80s/early 90s super strats). I owned two early 80s Ibanez Destroyers and they were solid workhorses... great playing too!
Thanks! My first "real" guitar was a white 1977 Ibanez Les Paul Custom that my dad bought for me in 1980. So I've always had a soft spot for Ibanez guitars. It's long gone, along with dozens of other guitars I'd love to get back.
Like the attack and vibrato's,wish more kids would study those, along with their attempts for speed.

Dude, you are TOTALLY RIGHT! It's a 1980!! The serial # is A80XXXX. I will update the info accordingly....damn....GOOD EYE!!

Geez! What amp do you have that guitar going thru, it SOUNDS TERRIFIC! It's like "I've come to LIFE!" Love it.
aliensporebomb 2 years ago
Thanks! The "amp" is a software emulation called "Guitar Rig" by Native Instruments. I run the guitar into the computer and then out to a mixer, combine it with the mic audio and then run a line to the videocam. There's no live miking of the amp, just my voice; the amp sound is direct.

Heh, I love my AR300 thru heavy processing too. I love the Artist guitars, great sounding, great playing axes that look totally classy.

Thanks so much. I really appreciate you taking the time :)

Yeah! Sweet guitar! I have a special place in my heart for early 80s Ibanez axes (much more than the late 80s/early 90s super strats). I owned two early 80s Ibanez Destroyers and they were solid workhorses... great playing too!

@PDXguitarfreak
Thanks! My first "real" guitar was a white 1977 Ibanez Les Paul Custom that my dad bought for me in 1980. So I've always had a soft spot for Ibanez guitars. It's long gone, along with dozens of other guitars I'd love to get back.

I know the feeling... I sold some gear back in my starving 20s that I absolutely regret!
