Sorry I have not been to Mira Mesa HS . The name sounds familiar, so I looked up Mira Mesa HS in my Arcadia Festival of the Band(AFOB) program. Mira Mesa does the parade and field with us for AFOB. Yay! Unfortunately I have not seen you guys perform because normally, I am working those events. :(

I am just a "band dad," my son plays the tenor sax in the Arcadia band.

atomicorangutan27: The students in the band practice alot, and I mean alot. Many of them take private lesson, on top of the stuff they learn in school, plus they are taking several AP classes(these are college level classes in high school). Many are really driven hard by their parents to the point that many have anxiety & consternation problems.

@iownmyhamster : "jrdnhunting" is correct. Arcadia has 3 drum lines("A," "Open", and "World."). The World percussion line marches with the parade block and participates in the field shows. Arcadia is the only HS in the US that has a percussion group in each of the WGI percussion classifications. The secret of the World percussion being really good, is lots of practice, and I mean lots of practice.

I think they did a pretty good job considering that they actually got into the parade, and they were a High School. This clip was maybe somewhere near the end cause you can feel how the band was starting to get a bit tired.

They had 90 percussionists playing throughout the whole parade. There are three lines that make up the percussion. two jv lines and one varsity line. The varsity line places in the top ten in ohio. Don't be commenting if you don't know the facts. Maybe your band can try marching 90 percussion and pit members the next time you go to the parade. Then you may comment.

The teacher had only one percussion line playing at a time while marching 5.5 mile parade route, ie JV1 would be playing and the varsity and JV2 would be resting. There are almost 400 musicians in the AHS band of which there is actually 3 bands, freshman band 1, varsity band 2, pep band 3, plus 60 color guard member. When the AHS takes the field during a field show, it is a sight to behold.

Since the parade was 5.5 miles long, we were suguest to buzz our lip when we are not playing, and also because of the distence, I believe some of us switched off every once in a while.
