It amazes me how YMO and Haruomi Hosono really anticipated lot of the sound of Kraftwerk's "Computer World" .. Hosono's 80/81 compositions have that hypnotic / dissonant sound of tracks like "Numbers".
This could also possibly be the first ever song to use the programmable Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer drum machine, which was released the same year as this album and was first utilized by YMO. This was probably their first experiment with the TR-808, before they made more extensive use of it the following year for their own albums BGM and Technodelic.
In addition, this also appears to be possibly the first example of proto-acid house, which didn't appear until the late 80s. Incredible stuff.
This song was very ahead of its time. It was produced by Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) in 1980, and was a precursor to YMO's own 1981 albums BGM and Technodelic. You can already hear some TR-808, electro-funk and ambient sounds, years before these sounds became popular. On top of that, Sandii's wonderful vocals give the song a truly timeless and other-worldly feel. This is one of YMO's best pieces of work in my opinion.
