I only learned about this guy about five minutes ago. Then I looked at the top comments and said to myself that I was amazed that people had something to criticize.
If this was Lady Gaga talking about the importance of shocking people with dresses made out of raw meat, *then* it would make sense to discuss such petty bullshit... but this is just a guy with a trumpet.
Listen to him play his trumpet and shut the fuck up.
Nicholas is so bad ass......For all you criticizing him......he's a human being and he might have been dealing with some issues......wait till yall get further in your careers and you have have to perform when you don't want to.....It's easy to think of the hollywood jazz heroin story or accuse him of being an ass........but chances are it's a far less entertaining story than what you believe it to be. we are all human..
He's really arrogant and thinks he's above music. I've seen him at a bunch of jazz festivals and been to some of his clinics. He never really plays at clinics or teaches music, he just talks about himself. I remember someone asked him "when do you know that you've made it?" and he said, "when you start making money."
@LIGHTRONIX what do you mean by 'he thinks he's above music'? I might be misunderstanding you, but if he felt 'above music', wouldn't he stop playing?
as far as 'When you know you've made it'....his response, in the commercial sense, seems pretty accurate.
not attacking, just trying to figure out what you mean
@JCrowMusic He'll just do stuff like walk off the stage while someone else is soloing or just plays like 3 notes in 20 measures. He often demonstrates his philosophies and it often comes across to the audience the wrong way. I'm sure he's a nice guy If you friends, but he kind of looks down at students wanting to learn, like we're too stupid to teach ourselves.
@LIGHTRONIX I did a All Star High School Jazz Ensemble in 1998 at Sacred Heart University and I thought he did great when he went on... but as a person he is quiet.
I saw Nicholas Payton with Doc Cheatham at a birthday concert for Clark Terry at the Univ. of New Hampshire back in the late 80s. Even as a youngster he exhibited the same verve and energy as demonstrated in this clip!
What a bad show Nicholas Payton put on at CMU. He was high out of his mind and sounded terrible. He left in the middle of the last tune and rumor has it that he was found a half hour after the concert sitting on the sidewalk by the library. I am a senior in the music program at CMU and I was embarrassed that all the young musicians had this as the closing concert. Does anyone have audio or video from the concert that can go up?
@boricuatrumpet69 Not the one in this video, it sounds fine. But I was at the one at CMU that ksyalxe was referring to, and it was ridiculously bad. I heard that Nicholas shot heroin before the concert, but I'm not sure about that. I wouldn't be surprised though, the way he played. I wish there was a video of it somewhere.
@2727TwentySeven2727 You saying this dude is on the monkey juice... what the fuck man... that's not cool at all. i could understand chiefing but damn the juice is no good.
This performance totally has the spirit of Louis Armstrong and the New Orleans tradition of trumpet playing. The late "Doc " Cheatham said that Nicholas comes the closest to capturing the soul and sound Louis Armstrong produced. What a great feeling that most be.
Nicholas can play the trumpet like no one else alive. Period!
Just look at Trey Anastasio's face and body as they pan back 3 times between 1:25 and 2:10...he is totally moved by Nick's playing and sound. In fact after this Trey asked Nick to play with him on a couple albums. Check it out. Two great musicians!

@ksyalxe This comment should not have been marked as spam, as it is definitely not spam. I was at this concert and it was fucking horrible.
