@nunvikingsofthesea Kinda. There is a water technique that I never learned properly during my visit. I don't believe you actually touch feces. Since I wasn't co-ordinated enough, I used toilet paper.
@nunvikingsofthesea I suggest you try the water technique, but definitely bring your own paper. Be aware that there is often no place in the bathroom to dispose of paper, since some toilets can't handle it. I used a ziplock bag at times. Since it's a company trip, you may be in places that cater to foreigners and this won't be an issue. Even if you are left handed, use your right hand for all eating and handshaking. Every meal begins with a hand cleaning bowl of water.
im sorry but ur gonna have to pass me a folk spoon and knife. if u have chposticks ill take those but i wud not eat with my hands. if its disrespect then ill bring my food to my room. check please
@heckler171 ok, it looks little funny to eat rice with the hands, this is true, but tell me how many time you have eaten a grilled chicken with your hands, and every body eat burgers with hand, fruit you eat with hand, only rice one must eat with folk or spoon, what ever available.
The people in this video are wrong in many aspects as far as eating Indian food is concerned.
Spoon is very much a part of Indian dining etiquette since ancient times.
A knife was never required to eat Indian food because Indian food is made in such a way that it is cut while it is being made. You don't need to cut it while eating.
If you need to cut something on the table while dining then it is not Indian food.

@djonutube It can get messy, but there are hand washing stations for before and after. My friends and I, being unskilled, made a mess. It's a lot neater than barbecue in the States, where I'm from.
i think you're missing my point.... it doesn't matter if there are wash basins around. It's the look of him eating in a messy fashion. Like watching a little kid making a mess.... I have seen Thai people eat with their hands.. but they use sticky rice (which does not break up all over the hand)... hence it does not get messy... now that looks better.
@djonutube actually you are right..it becomes messy! i am in indian and i know it quite well,,,sometime people prefers to have tissues so they can clean their fingers...but in india we use a lot basmati rice and they are normally cooked that they stay separates from each other and when u put curry it becomes easier for them to stay separate..so you cannot do anything on that...try to smach some chips and then try to eat them with hands.
I recently watched an Arab eating with his hands, all the while carrying on an insulting conversation with a non-Muslim, asking him if he were a kaffir and repeating it publicly. This was in a Gulf state. What an idiot, a conceited, self-assured abuser. He was a self-righteous child pleased with himself because he did things like eat with hands. He could not see the ugliness of everything he did because of his black heart. If you eat with your hands and you are not a good person, it's ugly.
Eating with hands is not a problem, if you don't share a dish with someone else. However, if you are reaching into a common dish, shared by others with hands you have just licked, you will be touching food with your licked hands which others will consume. This is an excellent way to spread disease. It would be better not to share dishes if you are going to eat with your hands alone, cultural practice and preference notwithstanding. That would be a bit like everyone drinking from the same cup.
@jhall38 The proper way that he was trying to show resulted in the fingers never even touching the lips. You sort of pop the food in. I wasn't able to do it so well, but luckily had my own plate to make a personal mess of. I agree that disease could be spread by sharing food. I dislike "double dipping" in the United States that sometimes happens at parties. (I'm not sure where you're from. Double dipping = a person puts a chip into dip, bites it, then dips the remaining chip in the dip again.)
@sarzaya so according to the other user, when a child shares a plate with their mother as often happens, it's wrong? If your a big family, I don't think jhall38's comment applies.
People may eat however they wish. They can throw the food on the floor and lick it off or throw it on their hand and lick it off. The limber could put it on other body parts. It's a choice. Whatever. Put it on a spoon or a fork. Use the left hand or the right. Whatever. Wash your hands. If you just defecated and didn't wash, perhaps it's best you don't lick your hands. Do what you like. However, don't think your eating habits make you holy. Having a good heart does that.
It's not a crime or any thing eating food with hands, I too love eating with hand. But hands should be washed very well before and after eating food. In case of indian food, we can not eat so many food items with fork or spoon. Indian foods served very hot, if one have food without hand, can not judge how much hot and his/her tongue would be burn. So by eating with hand is tradition in India, mainly in Southern India.
Eating with the fingers is a bit healthier than eating with a spoon or fork. When you eat with a spoon or a fork, sometimes you don't know whos mouth it was in. Whereas if you eat with the fingers, it is your fingers going into your mouth.
it kind of baffles me sometimes to see people use knives and forks to eat ribs or pizzas.I thought these were best eaten with nothing but your bare hands. But then again I could be wrong.
Washing hands thoroughly before and after eating is a must if you eat your food by your hand. In Kerala, parents, nursery teachers and school teachers teach children very strictly to wash their hands before and after eat. Later this becomes a common habit in the pupils life.
There are always some reasons behind every culture. There is nothing wrong if you eat your food with your hands as long as your hands are washed and clean. This is Indian culture and applicable for most Indian foods Westerners cannot imagine this for some reasons and also their foods are most suitable for spoon, knife and fork. However, I personally believe that using spoon, knife and fork look neater because, mixing food and eating with hand might not always be nice to see.
very true mate...... u have changed the topic of the subject by ur statement ...god knows when it will change and when we indians will respect each others regardless of cast, relegion and their job status
Wow, everyone is eating with their hands in a restaurant? Why, that's interesting. Eating with your hands is usually casually done at home but i've never heard of a restaurant that all the patrons eat with their fingers. I like eating by hand, however that really depends on what you are eating. If it's like soup that really requires utensils then it's a different story.
I started working in a restaurant at the age of 15 in a place called spice of life... Been eating curry for the last 6 years every night with my hands but its not the food you get from the menue. Best food in the world man
i think using a knife and fork to not touch one's food, like in my country of the US, is an odder sort of habit. who came up with the idea of placing a sharp piece of metal into the mouth? it just seems natural to use one's hands. they have a wash basin in the restaurant in india for before and after eating. the fingers never actually go into the mouth. for me, it was harder to learn than using chopsticks.
