What a ledge, still the quickest GB, if some of the current crop worked as hard as he did. Love of the commentators has no clue it was a WR until 600m to go!
Steve never did or does not the credit he deserves. he worked hard and trained hard and the training sessions did were extremely hard and I did some of them with him. He did have an excelent coach in Bob Wallis. Hard as as nails.
A world record while beating two of the marathon greats. Pity he never won a major championship. In 1986 Europeans he was MINUTES ahead before blowing up. I can't remember the details. I suppose he was injured during the other majors. A real life Alf Tupper.
back in the early 80s britain had steve jones, hugh jones, charlie spedding, geoff smith, mike gratton and so on. all these guys were sub 2.10 marathoners who have we had in the last 10 years or so..... no one. steve jones was the best of this bunch and 2 half marathons always spring to mind when his name is mentioned the hitec half at birmingham where he ran just outside 61 mins on a cold wet day and the great north run against mike musyoki where he ran 60.59 in second place. legend.
@philip1mus Today's British marathon runners are a pile of shit - and this is because most of the youth of today are a pile of shit. Nobody has the motivation, the will or the guts to even take up the hobby of marathon running anymore let alone produce world beaters. Most people in the street would not even have any concept of the speed these guys run 26 miles at, let alone the training involved.
I This was my second marathon. Chicago was, and still is a fast course, but the conditions that day were certainly not perfect. Steve Jones has never gotten the credit he deserved. A truly great distance runner. I agree with "cesagabi," Steve Jones was a "real runner."
great time with real runners..... not like now...epophians, kenyans on drugs going through half way in 61. no more real clean runners nowdays. SALUTE STEVE!!
Great to find this footage. I believe Steve is still the fastest Brit ever. But is it true he was a smoker or used to smoke? I'm sure i must be wrong about that. Fantastic athlete.

When I started out running as a kid during the 80's I was convinced I was Steve Jones.

A year or two later Jones actually misses the world record by 1 second.. one second! (Lopes had set the new world record shortly after this race).

He was born in Ebbw Vale near where i used to live in Nantyglo.
He did smoke quite heavily until he was asked to run a cross country race which i finished well but didnot win.
Ive met him three times and he is a shy man very quietly spoken but a brilliant runner who went on to beat the Marathon World Record.

Ive met Steve twice and hes a man of few words.
I also ran the 1996 Tour of Torfaen Half Marathon in South wales without realising Steve was on the start line.
A fellow Abertillery club member told me he was there and i shook his hand.
I finished in 1,23,45 but Steve was a fair bit quicker.
I believe he used to live in Nantyglo but what a runner.
He used to smoke heavily before taking up running but a huge talent.
Got his autograph aswell.
A great Welsh athlete.

Hey cloverleaf. I believe Steve smoked for 7 years starting at age 12 and left school at 13 to learn a trade.
Definitely a legend!
