its a sample, when they have their own song, but use a portion of someone elses lyrics.

a cover is when someone does the EXACT same song. so for example, Gym Class Heroes sampled the chorus from Breakfast In America by supertramp, for their own song. then Frank Bell [Faure45] did a cover of the gym class heroes song. make sense?
