Really brings back memories--Lou Rawls singing his soulful alphabet song--thank you for posting this. I remember this piece was one of the first Sesame Street segments featuring a celebrity helping kids learn the alphabet. I was five when the show first aired in 1969.
Remember back when Sesame Street used to be an actual show? Pre-Elmo? This was back before people used to dumb down things for kids. Children aren't stupid, they simply do not have the skills or knowledge base. Thanks for the Post.
That really takes me back in time. I remember being five when SS first aired.
I am now just recalling how Lou Rawls a very popular singer during the 60's. He is now remembered for "I'll see when I get There" and other songs from the 70's
After 40 seasons CTW has decided to change the show's format. No more band (going electric-hip hop), tearing down the sets moving to CT and shooting in front of green screen.
I remember that this and appearances on various TV variety shows of the day introduced me to this great singer. Did anyone notice that the layout next to the apartment building looks much different than it did during subsequent seasons?
This one first aired in a Season 1 episode, but must have been popular for several years afterwards; I can still remember yelling along with the kids when this came on TV!

Might have to do with Lou's name being mis-spelled? R-A-W-L-S!

The melody to this song reminds me a song he recorded 2 years earlier called Dead End Street.
Anyway It's nice to have a Chicago Connection to SS the 1st years it was on.
