if I'm not wrong this piece refers to the incident at Honnoji Temple in Kyoto, where, in 1582 I think, Oda Nobunaga, the first of three "unifiers" of Japan was betrayed by his general Akechi Mitsuhide and commited Seppuku, just as the Temple burned around him...vanity led Mitsuhide to betray his lord and me to write about it :(
No one really knows why Akechi betrayed Oda. There are many theories, but vanity is certainly not the reason why he killed him. Studies have shown that Akechi held a grudge against Oda for forcing him to kill his mother or aunt (still not clear to this day), other believed that he was humilated by Oda at a gathering of Oda's retainers. I personally think Akechi wanted to rule the land for himself because he felt Oda's methods were too violent.
