@SixbyFire I would love to see any of these people in these comments go try to catch that dog in that situation with no control pole. it was no harm to the dog either. necessary.
I like the control pole cam. Very unique perspective. As for the people saying it shouldn't be used, well that dog looked pretty vicious. If a control stick wasn't used the dog catcher would have been bitten for sure. Surely everyone saw how the dog was biting in to the stick numerous times.
I think you misread my comment. Unless a 'catchpole' you mentioned is something different to a control stick which is what he was using with the cam attached from my understanding. Please re-read my comment and clarify what your saying. Thanks.
I use treats, i use commands or i try a regular leash, after that, out comes the pole. I had to fight off a crazed Weimaraner who bit 3 ppl, while and P.O stood over my shoulder with his glock, I had to pry an 8yr old kids head out of a crazy Alaskan Malamutes jaws. At some point, criminals whether Human or Animal, looses its right to a non violent apprehension.
I'm a Animal Control Officer in Southern Cali, and i would of handled this no different, people who make comments like "davidsonyn" or "wtfmurphy" have no frickin idea what it's like to be out on such a call, i"ve been doing this now for 16 yrs. and other then Officer safety is we have to protect the public. All You people who choose to make negitive comments need to go down to your local Animal Control and request to do a ride along....you might learn something.
wtf? out of all of the methods of getting that dog into the van he uses that so called "control" pole?? and adds the camera to show it off? the dog is scared and how would you react if your scared and vulnerable and someone comes to you with a pole in your face? sure it may be a dangerous dog but is doesnt mean you can just shove a fucking pole onto his neck and treat like a fucking wild lion from africa.
I'm all for hearing new ideas about how to capture animals, fire away! And, before you bring it up, we rarely use chemical capture, i.e. tranquilizers, on dogs.
We use the control pole for fearful or aggressive dogs so our officers are not bitten, officer safety is priority number one here, if you can't keep yourself safe, you can't help anyone else.
The camera isn't to "show it off" either, it's a new way of looking at things that the general public or new ACOs have never seen before...
@SixbyFire I would love to see any of these people in these comments go try to catch that dog in that situation with no control pole. it was no harm to the dog either. necessary.
"Out of all the Methods" Tell me sir, What are all the methods?? Yes, the animal was scared,I get it, but you act as if there are some other methods. True, the officer could have locked the white gate I see in the video, in someone elses front yard, played the dog wisperer, gained its trust, and then 5 to 6 hours later tried to load him onto his truck. Off to the shelter and then vet check him, realizing it would be weeks of rehab, hundreds of dollars in meds and boarding. You got the cash????
You can see me in the video run out to try to close the white gate. Maybe 95% of people with electric driveway gates in this area have gates that are broken and will open and close by hand. This house was one of the 5% with a gate that actually worked and couldn't be pulled closed.
It would have given us more time if we could have gotten that gate closed, but I'm sure we would have used the control pole on the dog anyway since it's always safer for the dog when compared to chemical capture.
until you have experienced an angry dog you cannot comment any animal is at it's most dangerous when it is scared and having people running around it will only stress it further
I adopted a cat from the shelter that was there for 1 full year,
after they found her outside in the cold winter. she wasnt adoptable because she was SO cranky, now that I have her, she is the sweetest pet and no longer cranky. Just another case of "you cant judge a book by its cover".
Well, animal control work does not always have a happy ending. Thankfully the dog didn't die by getting hit on the freeway, nor did it cause a motor vehicle accident which might have injured people. He was held for 5 days, before being humanely tranquilized and euthanized.
I didn't put it in the video's info, but someone threw him out of their vehicle, along with his favorite blanket, the day before this video was shot. There was a witness, but they didn't get a license plate number.
too bad someone did not adopt him. More should be done to promote adoption. 5 days isnt really enough time for dogs to be adopted- Dogs are more work so it might take longer to place them in a home- Thanks for the great work you do for helping animals.
Reading over all the comments: Im fortunate enough to have the same light bar on my truck as local Police Officers, the only downside as you see in this video, people get scared and think you're a cop and slow down the progress of catching the perp. Our Kennel is a no kill shelter, we hold the dog for 1 week, after that we have a 10 day adoption period for animals who apply, after that we take them to county shelter where they have an additional 10 days to be addopted. Nice vid, i want a cam lol
And that's why I don't like No-Kill shelters, they advertise that fact like they keep the animal until it's adopted. When in all actual reality, they just transfer it to a facility that will kill it.
Good job. I'm an ACO too, it's great seeing you post the real thing here. Notice how on Animal Planet they almost never show the actual capture? One minute the dog's at large, the next minute somebody's walking him nicely on the pole. Yeah, sometimes they do freak out, the person holding the pole has to be able to deal with that.
I don't normally post a lot of personal information online since anyone can access it, though there are probably enough clues in the video to figure it out.
No, the camera is mounted just in front of the middle hand grip, too far for a dog to reach. You can see me turning it on in the beginning of this video on the dash cam part of the footage.
I cannot believe you put this kind of crap on here.. Its abuse IMO.. That dog was scared and injured and your yelling at it then after you catch him you practically hang the poor dog..And then you try to talk nice "come on buddy"..What a fake..You should of waited until you had help.. AND your not a cop so that guy didnt have to move for a yellow light..And you ran a stop sign..classic
I'm open to suggestions on other ways to catch the dog. It had to be caught before it caused an accident or got killed. Talking nice once you catch the dog is a technique that is taught to ACO's to help calm a dog, but it doesn't always work. The guy in front of me didn't have to pull over and both of us ran the stop sign too. If you're ever in the SF Bay Area contact me to set up a ridealong to see what we really do. The job is real easy when you're not the one doing it.
These poles do not harm the dogs. They are to protect officers from possibly being bitten by an unstable dog. When these poles are used, the dog sometimes freaks out and starts rolling around on the ground and jumping through the air, so ACO's try to calm the animal down. He was not 'hanging' the dog. By the way, remember this "crap" ACO's do the next time your child or loved one is approached by an aggressive stray dog... We'll drive extra slow for ya, since "we're not cops..."
I understand that now..But it was quite upsetting to see a dog in such distress and that is why I reacted the way I did. I respect what animal control officers do....I have also been on the end of a pittbull in my front yard that would not let me out of my house..I eventually saw she had 2 pups with her and realized she was protecting them...
It was a hot day so I brought them water and some food...Mom ate when I went back in the house and shortly after that they left.. She was afraid of me...Poor thing..However I had called animal control before I saw the pups and it took them an hour to get here and when she got here the dog had just left and I told her where to go and instead of going after the fearful, and possibly dangerous dog, she went after me for my dogs asking how many I had and to produce their licenses...
.Why didn't she go after that dog before it hurt someone??? So when that happened my respect for animal control kind of went down..That has since changed anyhow...
Hey thanks, I guess if the dog ran out onto the freeway and caused a roll over accident that would be much better. That happened with another dog on this same freeway 6 months before I filmed this, so it does happen. Thankfully everyone survived that accident. Oh and the average taxpayer pays about $4 to $5 per year for animal control services, just FYI.
Do you have police lights on the ACO vehicles in your county? Because that guy in the pickup wasn't moving. Or can you not turn them on in situations like that?
Nvm. I just saw my answer. The animal control where I live is part of the police department, so they have police lights. Im sure it makes it a lot easier for situations like that.
Awesome! Good to see this on here. While I don't do ACO work anymore, I still like for the public to see what the job really entails. It's not all fun and games like it is on Animal Planet!!
Since you asked 5 months ago & this person didn't deign to answer, I will. If he works for a city, the dog would've been kept for 5 days (by law in the state I live in; don't know about CA)then they're killed. Sometimes rescues pull them at the last minute, but not always. As far as medical for injuries, that depends on rescues as well. They do well to get fed while penned from what I've seen.

why the hell shouldn't catchpoles be used? they're safe and effective. they protect the dogcatcher and the animals alike. nothing wrong there.
