You would never be able to make it stay still in the air by Earnshaw's theorem. There is no possible stable equilibrium with permanent magnets. You have made a potential with a saddle point that you can use strings to seem like a minimum in the potential (and thus no movement).

Nice. I too tried to achieve levitation with permanent magnets once. After some serious time and (not so serious amount of) money invested I found about Earnshaw's theorem. I would've saved me quite a bit of time if I had known something that was discovered more than 100 years age.

In any case, you won't be able to achieve levitation with non-moving permanent magnets.
