Hey buddy.. I got this lens after ur review but I found that the auto-focus in video mode is very bad to an extent that it does not auto focus at all... can u help me out?
unfortunately i don't have a dslr with video function so i don't know anything about af in movies, the last thing i knew, is that you have to manually focus but that was at the release of the 5d mark 2, i haven't done much photography since then
autofocus is a thing of light reaching the af sensor
if it's a dark andvironment and/or the lens is stopped down it can happen that the light reaching the sensor is insufficient so the aperture set too small would be my guess
Those CRT monitors are killing our planet. LoL J/k.
Um..... Is it really worth over 3x the price over the 50mm f/1.8 MkII for wider aperture and USM? I have the f/1.8 MkII.... although it feels cheap as hell, the images are crystal clear.
hi..u said that you bought this lens to replace your 1.8mk ii...im thinking of buying a 50mm f1.8 ii ..and since you had that same lens, i would like to ask you ..do you think i should get it instead of the f1.4???..is the image quality good?
The image quality is that different between them but the 1.4 is a little better. There are two main difference, the build quality of the 1.8 mkii is very bad and the 1.4 is pretty good. And lastly, the extra f-stop really helps to create a great depth of field. Get the 1.4 if you can afford it but the 1.8 is still a good lens.
Before getting this lense I did a lot of research on the best non L series fast lense and this was across the board the best so I got it and its great. I was tempted with a the sigma 30mm 1.4 which had a lot of good reviews but unfortunatly it had a lot of reports of bad batches and having to send back to the manufacturer which I wouldent want to worry about if Im spending a lot of money on it. Glad I bought the canon 1.4 usm plus I could get a good price for it if I ever need to sell it.
I'm currently looking to buy a sigma 30mm 1.4 because sometimes the 50mm is too long
The sigma 50mm 1.4 is told to be better when it does not have the focus problem you mentioned, because rumors say that it was designed as a 1.2 lens but reduced to 1.4 max in order to have better vignetting etc
It is true that the canon gets too telephoto because its 50mm but you just have to adapt to it. I really wish sigma invested a little more on there reliability because I would definatly consider using there products. When I pay £300+ for a lense I dont want to worry about whether if its going to start playing up with me.
Hey man! You provide good knowledge for a newbie. Although your English does not have an American accent, don't worry, we understand what you are saying. Keep up the good work!
Is it balanced well on the rebel? Is it a good lens to use with the focal length?
Smalskin 4 months ago
@Smalskin It feels very balanced in my opinionand makes a great long standard/portrait lens

@blueeyevisualize mine doesn't sound like what i would call chalky
it's relatively silent

@Frace91 What does yours sound like? Mine is kinda like two smooth surfaces rubbing together as they move.

for Alstarmania,
it's not your lens. AF does not work on any DSLR for video.

aside from focal length, do you know if the crop factor does anything to how much light the aperture lets in?
Oscar3dM 2 years ago
get decent recording :) It's not that fun to look at a bad quality (image/sound) review. But you helped me :) Where you from btw?
How do you feel about this lens for nature photography ? Sunsets, trees etc.
Furuly 2 years ago
i have good camera and mic now, i will use it when i make the new ones
I'm from germany, glad to help ypu :)
i think this lens is good for anything, it just might be a little too long for nature photography
Frace91 2 years ago
For a German your English is pretty good ;)
Long? Could you explain?
Furuly 2 years ago
thank you :)
by long i mean the focal length, the angle of view of this lens is relatively small on an apsc dslr.
For landscapes a wide angle lens is usually the choice but it depends of course

I'm looking to buy a used 30mm or test it at my local store before buying it
All third party companies have these problems because canon does not give the exact "protocoll" or whatever you call the script for the focussing
Frace91 2 years ago
Yep testing it at a local store would be the best way.

It´s not just a little sharper thn the 50 1,8 mkII, but it´s VERY much sharper in many of the reviews that I´ve seen. still, nice video!
