Geography rules.I got straight A's all my life, and got F in effort in Geography, ever since my first class in year one. When I moved to year 3, when we started Year 3 Geography Class, I got a phone call home from my teachers saying how great at Geography I was... first time the teacher ever did that. In year 6, I beated my Teacher in a geography quiz by about 20 answers. Ever since I have wanted to be a Geographer with a PhD in it. And may I say... this is a brilliant video.

Human Geography is more than reading maps and where countries are located. It's GIS, Population, Land Use, Politics, Economic Systems, Culture and Urban Geography. I would think a civil engineer could appreciate the importance of learning about GIS, globalization, outsourcing and land use.

@JoeBeacher The problem is, in an increasingly degree-focused economy and workplace as the UK, I can't really see where GCSE and A-level geography can fit in, bar summer jobs. Talking to friends who have taken it in the aforementioned levels, I'm not really convinced that anything that is both important and unique is being offered. Apologies for my previous heavy-handed comment, but in my opinion what geography syllabus' need is a new direction, though I can't elaborate on which direction.

@Wildicex As long as people are polite, I welcome debate so thanks for your comments. I agree about the degree-focused economy and many people go on to take Geography degrees. They have one of the highest rates of employment amongst graduates. I remember listening to a senior member of an international oil company (not BP as it happens). He needed skilled engineers but he also wanted Geographers who had a better grasp of environmental issues & an understanding of communities where they worked.

I remember my teacher showing me this video whilst working in the geography department (due to being a prefect) during open evening last october, i also remember seeing this a day after in lesson.

As a geography student i also do agree with Joe. People need to know geography and use as part of their daily lives. For example how could you travel to places if you don't know where they are, you need to know your locations.

WOW what an amazing video!!! I study Geography at Degree level in the UK and i have to say that this has to be one of the best videos i have seen on Youtube. Geography matters indeed. I study it at University in Ghent (Belgium) and I really think more people should be aware of everything that is told in this video and so much more. Geography is not very popular in high school and college, because students simply don't know what is about. They think about rocks, capitals, boring landscape stuff and don't understand WHY this is important for our world, its environment and so much more. Thanks for posting this man!

Don't underestimate the power of geography - geographers are much in demand these days! Almost every business needs people with a good understanding of what is going on in the world - sustainable energy, food miles, transport issues, etc. If you learn about GIS and GPS systems in geography you will see how these link to jobs in retail, transport, emergency services, planning and much more. Almost all data and images is geotagged these days showing the inportance of locational data.

@JoeBeacher I truly couldn't agree more. Most people don't know where they are on the map. Even if they were using the internet and all the sites, would they truly know how to spell a particular place, and know to perhaps exploring it some. With all nations, and cultures, and natural wonders and history and all sorts of stuff that maked Geography amazing. So I totally agree underestimating geography is very shallow.
