Sir I live in an area of Texas that has the most horrible (non drinkable) water. My pop up drain stopper was so coroded that it came up with the screw still intact and just broke to pieces from the bottom section, looks like it has teeth that hook on to the other section of the bath drain. Can I just replace the top part?
Thanks! Your video accomplished what asking three different big-box store workers and a plumbing-savvy co-worker couldn't. All I needed was some tub-protecting cardboard, #2 Phillips screwdriver, WD-40 to prep the screw, needle nose pliers, a plastic bag and an old toothbrush. The crud is best fished up with pliers, rather than plunged down. Looking at how the big mess was stuck on the "X", you could probably have plunged for hours with no luck. Fish it all out my friends, and don't gag. Cheers!
@Swimgirl6855 If your screw won't come out, I'd suggest some liquid wrench. My screw was phillips head and the screw was stainless steel. It is normal right hand screw thread. There was no rust or corrosion. If you can't get it loose, I think your only option is to replace the entire drain assembly, since the screw is what holds the drain plug to the drain.
Bless you - this helped. I had no idea there was a screw in there. Not an easy task to get eye to eye with it - oy! Talk about bad design. But thanks for this, tremendously helpful and saved me the cost of a plumber I could ill afford!
I have been trying to figure out how to get my stopper out for days now and all the web site I've checked have suggested various methods using pliers. I gouged up the stopper trying all these methods. No one suggested that it might be a screw underneath like yours. I saw your video and I went back and looked at mine and I was like F**K, lol. So easy. Thank you so much!
Hey I have a drain where the knob screwed of but no place for a screwdriver under it nor do i have one of the Moen ones with the screw underneath. REALLY cant figure out how to take this thing off.
LMAO! My stopper is torn up too because of the two pliers method! Wish the stopper brand was somehow etched on the stupid thing. Glad I found this video. All clear now. Boy, it was nasty in there!
Thank you for the video. It aided me considerably in fixing my clogged drain! I just needed to find a way to remove that darn pop-up plug before I could do anything meaningful that would last.
This method is fine or if you set the stopper in the closed position you can use pliers on the knob and rotate it counter-clockwise and unscrew the whole thing which makes cleaning the drain easy. In the method I use I have no chance of loosing the screw if I accidently give it an extra turn. When you reinstall it just hand tighten and removal by hand is easy the next time.
@justlooking2222 My moen stopper in this video has no way to rotate the stopper to unscrew it (others do). It sounds like your drain stopper is different. It is possible to unscrew it to far and drop the screw down the drain. I'd recommend being careful and just unscrew it until it comes loose - hope this clarifies.
A million thank yous!!! Like others, I struggled for quite a while using two pliers in a futile attempt to separate the top piece from the base. It wasn't until I found this video that I learned that some of these drains are of one piece construction - major doh!!!! Of course there's no brand name on the drain so I had no way of knowing that I have a one piece Moen drain. You saved me man, a million thanks again! :-)
Thank you so much. I couldn't get anywhere with the two pliers and was about to give up
