  • because he gave us hope, after this our entire culture was destroyed

  • @ronjob99 Thanks for the reply, that actually makes sense, probably explains why your folk music sound cheerful and ours usually sounds so miserable :)

  • @MOSTRIM1 a dont know i think your being a bit hard on your kinsmen, there's some crackin irish tunes out there check out macphearsons rant/mingulay boat song both by the corries. merry christmas from ALBA

  • @ronjob99 Yes you're right, dont think I was in good form that day :) Slainte

  • @MOSTRIM1 As a Scot I can quite happily listen tae Irish music pal, because as a whole Scots can be a wee bit crabitt (miserable incase yae didnae ken), Whisky in the jar is a belter! Irish music is fuckin' braw! be proud ae it mate : )

  • The one thing I can't understand about this period from an ousiders point of view (I'm Irish), is why 'Bonny' Charlie has been remembered for 300 years? From my reading it seems the worst case of 'lions led by a lamb' in history. God knows we have had our share of letdowns over the centuries but we dont commemorate them

  • @MOSTRIM1 1916, killing of all those people in your war of freedom going where. Then singing about it and collecting round the pub's

  • @MOSTRIM1 We often remember the "glorious" failures with more fondness than the winners e.g. William Wallace didn't win in the end, but he's remembered more fondly than Robert the Bruce (he's seen as more of a politician/tactician in it for himself, because he was). I think we often see failures as purer somehow than winners. And that doesn't just go for the Scots - the English & maybe the Welsh are often similar. I mean this is by no means always true, but in many cases it is.

  • @robsargent4 charlie receives more flak of late due to revised history of how much of a dithering failure he was compared to what may have been and how he was using the highland clans as cannon fodder to enable him to be the next unionista elite

  • @Apemanwithcalculator well did he not promise the men who fought for him that if they won, not only would the Stuarts (who were deemed more sympathetic to the Catholic & Episcopalian Highlanders & Irish than the Tudors & King Billy had been or the dynasty in power at that time, the Hanoverians were) take back the British and Irish thrones, but Bonnie Prince Charlie also promised to reverse the Act of Union if he won.

  • @robsargent4 O did he? they never teach that...fair play mun. I am still suspicious of people in charge though :P

  • @Apemanwithcalculator to be honest, so am I.
