I'm glad I got the chance to catch them on their 2007 run, as it is likely their last tour. That show was great, with a nice mix of material from throughout their career, plus a few surprises such as Ripples & Carpet Crawlers.
I love the way this sounds. If this were played in place of "Hold On My Heart," the tour would've already been much better than it was (and it wasn't bad).
People always blame Phil for the shift to poppier material. Personally? I think Tony and Mike were the stubborn ones. Didn't Phil write the lyrics to "Domino," "Driving The Last Spike," and "Fading Lights?" And wasn't he the one who convinced the band to play "Ripples" in 2007?
I'll always admire Phil's willingness to play older stuff.
@AeroZach1029 Phil DID convince them to play Ripples. He wrote Driving The Last Spike, however - the other two (Fading Lights and Domino) were written by Tony Banks. :)
Yeah, they wanted to play In Too Deep in the place of Ripples in the 2007 tour, but it was Phil who insisted on playing Ripples. It was something similar that happened on the Calling All Stations tour, Ray Wilson was the one who asked the guys to play Lamb and other old material. But hey, don't forget the Netherlands concert in 1981 that they got booed and Phil defended the new stuff saying "if you don't like the new music, you better get the hell outta here" and called the old stuff "old shit".
@AeroZach1029 ....>Tony and Mike were great guys to workfor and were not the stubborn ones at all. They were all great guys, all five of them and their roadies as well. And Yes Phil would write lyrics after the tune was done my usely Tony and Mike.
@AeroZach1029 No, Phil didn't write the lyrics for Domino or Fading Lights, it was Tony. And no, he didn't convince the others to play Ripless, it was Tony. It's been documented how hard was for Phil to sing Ripless properly in 2007
@LUDWIGPARIS ...>it was great being able to see it 85 times, opps 84 cause Phil lost his voice on the first or second song and the show stoped, that was in Florida....>very short Concert. Took long to load out than the show, lol.
Not to mention they'd have to change personnel :) Imagine them picking out various people from the audience to take their place when they get tired :)
Cool, but I liked the arrangement in 2007 better--the nice little break between the last verse and the chorus, as well as the little flourish at the finish.
When I heard them perform this in Boston (2007), it was very moving. The only time I have ever been choked up at a concert before and I've been to a lot of shows.
@stevedrums hey, tell me how was that genesis show,i missed their 07 tour, i saw them in 92 in dallas and houston at the hangar, man what a band, been a fan for 30 years and im 40, i have seen phil also like 6 times
It was actually a very moving experience. I had seen them on each tour since the 'Invisible Touch Tour but this had more meaning ebcause they played songs like this one and 'Ripples' which I never thought I would hear. One also got the sense of there being a true, genuine affection between the five of them. Just glances and looks that one can gleam from being in the 2nd row. They are pound for pound my favorite band. Just a lovely, moving experience for one more night.
@Laserkev ...>Wrong Answer. Here is the real reason. Dallas was where we set-up for Audio&Video Recording for future TV, DVD-CD...>the other song dropped from the Tour was Mama.....>here again only on the show for the Recording @ Dallas. So they were added to that show only.
Such a beautiful song! -And the perfect end to a concert. I think the setlist of the 1991/1992 tour was really disappointing. The setlist improved a whole lot for the 1997/1998 + 2007 tour, because of the balance between old and new/more recent material.
There were a couple of songs I did enjoy from the 1991/1992 tour: Driving The Last Spike, Fading Lights, No Son Of Mine, and Dreaming While You Sleep.

@CoTeCiOtm They wanted to play In Too Deep on the US leg of the 2007 tour, since ITD was more popular in the US than Ripples.

Phil really wanted to perform The Carpet Crawlers on the tour but Mike and Tony did not. That's why it was only played once if anybody wants to know.

Very true. The live versions of those songs gave them life that they lacked in the studio. I also thought Jesus He Knows Me was well done.
