Το εξαιρετικό ποίημα του Ελύτη περιγράφει με συμβολιστικά μέσα έκφρασης τον έρωτα ενός εξόριστου φυλακισμένου στην Γυάρο για μια κοπελλιά.

Γι΄ αυτό και ο πρώτος στίχος του τραγουδιού ακούγεται τόσο παράξενος, δίνοντας την εντύπωση ότι ένα δέντρο θα μπορούσε ποτέ να φυτρώσει στη θάλασσα ανάμεσα σε δυο νησιά.

Ανάμεσα Σύρο και Τζια, υπάρχει μόνον ένα νησί: η Γυάρος, το γνωστό νησί φυλακή, όπου Έλληνες κεντρώοι, δημοκράτες και κομμουνιστές εξορίστηκαν, βασανίστηκαν και μαρτύρησαν σχεδόν αδιάκοπτα ανάμεσα στο 1946 και το 1974.

Thats why the songs first verse sounds so strange, giving the impression that a tree can possibly grow in the sea between two islands. The song describes an exiled prisoners personal symbolism of his own love.

Between Syros and Gia, there is only one island: Yaros, the notorious prison island where Greek liberals, democrats and communists were exiled, tortured and martyred almost uninterruptedly between 1946 and 1974. Nobel Prize Odysseas Elytis could not evidently name the prison island that along with another island of similar use, Makronisos, were prohibited names in Greece for several decades.
