Please help, my 6g72 motor is making a sound and i dont know what it could be .... heres the video /watch?v=neX955oHpJA . post a comment on what u think it might be.
@vontristan19 from a 91 GTO. i've always wanted to do that to a montero over here. i know right off the bat the turbos and thermostat housing are facing the wrong way for RWD. but the block it self has unused threaded holes for the RWD engine mounts your pajaro uses.
@vontristan19 actually you could swap the turbo manifolds from the front and rear heads, and that would correct the way the turbos face, you would just have to deal with making custom water and oil lines for the turbos
first for all you dumbasses, all these 3.0's until 99 made that tick after a while. I've had 2 TT's and the first one (91) had it and my second one (95) makes it but not as often.
But why the fuck is all that shit laying in the water...
that soo unsafe i mean you have the ecu laying in water and the rst were covered by plastic bag lol...im surprised it even ran..and that lifter tick..
@Aomega the ECU is elevated about an inch off the ground. even if the board was getting wet, 12V is not going to do anything even remotely dangerous aside from possibly rendering the $10 non turbo ECU useless. yes lifter tick, a problem 90% of these older engines have, and is easily remedied with $100.
@alwaysaswish Theres a couple ways. The best way obviously is to replace them. Make sure you upgrade to the 99 lifters because they have a bigger oil hole which prevents the ticking. You can also try running royal purple oil for your next oil change, it helps with minor lifter ticks.
If you have a SOHC engine I advise just replacing them yourself because its easy.
Alright thanks alot man... that really helps and as of right now i actually have a 98 sohc which is a all looks and no go... somewhat haha... with a horrible lifter tick sound but quits after awhile... so I am thinking of getting that fixed and or doing it myself... but i also have a 95 vr4 which has a 97 engine in it... and that one has just slight slight lifter tick sound... not bad but it is there once in awhile... so they are not big problems considering they quit after awhile... but what
i say this because you mentioned it wad a horrible sound. if it ONE loud knock per revolution then its a engine bearing! if what you hear is obviously only loud because there are multiple tick then it may just be really bad lifter tick.... if it doesnt run because of the ticking then chances are you damaged the valve seats....
should be the going rate to have the lifters replaced in a vehicle like this? any idea? and i am already running royal purple in my vr4 lol... but in the sohc i just running regular pennzoil or some crap lol...
@alwaysaswish well i would deff do them your self on the sohc even if your not very mechanically inclined. All you need to do is take off the valve cover and you will see the camshafts, rocker arm, valve springs and all that. The rocker arms are the little pieces shooting off of the camshaft. What you need to do is loosen the bolts on the camshaft (I believe theres 12 but Idr).
Now some people say you shouldnt take the camshaft completely out but i did and had no issues. The lifters are under the rocker arms inbetween the rocker arms and valve springs. Simply take them out and put the new ones in. Make sure you soak the new ones in oil before installing or your problem will come back. The valve cover in the back is harder to get to but the same concept.
Now to have this done at a shop your looking at 50-100 in parts and about 6 hours of labor. Probly around 600-1000 bucks. The lifters in the vr4 are harder to do and cost more
Same motor in my 3000GT.
Only thing I spot here is you have the ECU on the ground with all the water getting near it.
sketchy as hell to me

How do you fix a lifter tick sound?
alwaysaswish 2 years ago
replace the lash adjusters with ones from a 1998-1999 DOHC engine
shooter83 2 years ago
@shooter83 does it have to be a tt model or base sl?

make sure its a "tick" and not a "knock"!
tick- in head!
knock-.......in block!

@Jorge3KGT thats no doubt just a lifter tick. ive heard them many times. a knock is alot different of a sound.
