I recall first hearing this song at the suggestion of a friend a few years back. I then watched this particular video around that same time after querying it on here. (I meant to say something then and forgot, but four years later I can finally say something.) Contained within both the song and video, its casual bleakness, its plain persistence, its very repetition...the music assails its listener by melodic melancholia with its chanted, gang vocals and folk instrumentation. "I know it well."
Comment dire avec des mots ce que l'on ressent au fond de soi en écoutant ce son.Cette musique me prend, elle m'étreint, il y a elle est moi, moi je suis après.Elle sait taire un groupe d'amis échaudés!
I like it, but I don't really understand why this is so incredible like everyone's saying. Maybe I'm just not deep enough to understand. Anyhow, I love, love, love Beirut with all my heart and soul.
This previous msg was obviously a strongly political msg. I'm not trying to promote Balkans here but to urge all self-conscious and deliberate people in this area and in the whole planet to forgive the Balkans for their both innate and cultivated (due to life difficulties) ability to above all strive to enact their life experiences into music or other form of culture...

I'm pretty sure that he made a european tour because in some of the videos they are speaking french (they are videos of him and his band playing the streets and what not)

Nice song. The trumpet, strings and background vocals remind me of In the Deathcar, by Iggy Pop.

Well, elfeggs and others. I think the vid' fits perfectly. Read Thomas Pynchon's, Against The Day while listening to Beirut. Perfect soundtrack.

actually Zach's never been to Balkan countries, and I don't think he ever made a "european tour" as we could call it.
As I'm serbian, I can say that being such a gypsy lover, Zach won't wait so long before he comes around here.. :P
