$70 for a raised bed kit? @.@ It'd take years to get ROI on that. I built them out of $5.50 6"x1"x12' spruce planks with weed cloth on the bottom, cost about $8 a bed. I know it's not as durable, but at $8 I could build one every year for almost a decade before the kits became comparatively economical, *if* they last that long, and you have to remember the average time spent in one home is only 7 years.
john thanks SOOOO much for doing this video! i live in iowa and i know of a few menards close by. its nice to see what i have overlooked and your personal recommendation. enjoy these videos!
Hey John have you ever did a video on making your own composting bin, barrel or something like that? I really dont want to buy one if i can build a better one cheap.
I am a chef and always have a ton of scraps everyday.
I live in Iowa, lots of Menards here, John. We just got 2 of the Jack Daniels barrels this past weekend. They now hold Rutgers Tomatoes and onions. Thanks for another great video. Your videos are appreciated!!!!!
muhn-ards. Hey John, how's that Kellogg organic compost working out? The bags I purchased looked a little woody compared to local compost from Whittier Fertilizer.
John, So cool to see you do a show at a store I shop at here in Ohio. I am going to try to convert my garden to all raised beds next year and this info will definitely help. I currently have 2 4x8 raised beds which I built from lumber I purchased at Menards!
Thanks, i liked the data on what flowers are edible or not and to see that you advise for seeds to plant. Off course I like the data on raised beds, but I'd try to see if I can do some myself or with my friend.
You talk about using concrete blocks for raised beds in this video. I know you don't like using pressure treated lumber for raised beds, due to the chemicals. How about the paint / chemicals in the concrete blocks? Is that less of a concern to you? Why? We've been thinking about getting more raised beds built, and have been considereing using concrete blocks because we'd like them to last forever, and so I just wanted your opinion about this. Thanks.
@atwell8 Yeah, I'm surprised John you didn't mention anything about the different ways timber is treated and what to look out for. Has he covered this in a previous video?
To my knowledge, concrete blocks usually dont specifically contain any paint/chemicals in them. If you are concerned, mix up your own concrete or better yet papercrete or cob and build your raised beds out of that.
I bought 3 raised bed kits like the one in your video for $9.99 each at the end of growing season. So check each week towards the end of summer. Those kits are stakable so you can add to it. Great for potatoes.
We have Menards here in Minnesota. The one that was close to me was torn down so I have a crappy (way overpriced) True Valu or Home Depot to choose from within 20 mins from my home. Menards has always had the 40% + off of their seed prices when I've been there by the way. End of seasons sales were my favorite where I could get about 4 packs for $1 of the name brand seeds.
I never saw that many seeds anywhere. not even half of that. Damn this country we don't have anything around here.. no different seeds, no kits for anything nothing.. eish...
I would feel weird talking to a camera walking threw a store! lol
