Van Halen were notorious for going off on an improvisation of their songs.. Right in the middle of a song they would go off in a completely new direction and just play music that none of them had ever played before, and did that live on the spot and pulled it off all the time.

You will never see the lip-synch musicians of today do something that great. Hell they even screw up lip-synching their own shit.

I'm not sure, at this late date, that Eddie's not starting at the same second for the same exact number of seconds, has really stood the test of time as an important issue. Also, he is upset since the first moment the song begins, and Eddie seems disconnected or believing he was god and deserved more attention, but I think he was a guest musician and he had to understand the it was not his gig, and the real star at that moment was Jackson. In fact Michael realizes that Eddie was not in the right timing, and before Eddie`s solo Jackson shouts "You got it Eddie, Eddie, Eddie", and even though Michael`s marking the timing, Eddie fails. It was too much for him.

Surprise!!! He should begin at 2:20 to be in timming with the song. This was not intentional. A mistake is a mistake, even if it comes from Eddie

It's definitely not a case of playing it differently live than on the record - if people actually listen, they will hear the solo itself is faithful to the studio version. For me, that would have been a guitar smashing moment.
