Ever since I saw Shinya Aoki lose to the gayest fighter int he history of sports (Yuichiro Nagashima), I've become incredibly annoyed by watching his fights. Because if Yuchiro can beat him, why the hell can't these "Beasts" beat him?
You have no idea how serious of a grappler this guy is. UFC fanboys are so pathetic, it would actually be an incredible fight. If Frankie Edgar can take Penn down Aoki could definitely pull guard on him.
Guys Aoki is a beast, there is no doubt. However, strong wrestlers with good submission defence will always be too much for Aoki. Melendez proved that.
@curtsher11 No, Melendez proved that he was too much for Aoki on that day. One guy winning by decision does not mean anything "will always be too much" for Aoki, or any fighter. One fight doesn't constitute a pattern.
Only time will tell, and with training and experience, fighters are able to negate some of their weaknesses.
@curtsher11 He also beat Aurelio (a third-degree BJJ black belt), Alvarez (a former wrestler who has several submission wins), Beerbohm (a freestyle wrestler), etc etc etc.
Aoki's only real weakness is his stand-up, which is currently laughably bad.
@007alagah I think the problem is that Aoki is used to longer rounds that give him more time to get his submissions off, whereas in UFC he has to work against the bell.
and Gil easily manhandled Aoki...great grappler but very 1 dimensional fighter...Aoki could never hang w/ the UFC LWs...all this hype around aoki, gomi, omigawa and kid and they all got worked by stateside fighters...they might be the best in the east but over here theyre mid tier
@tonyman148 they got worked by state fighters because the rules are pampered to wrestlers. as we see when the state fighters go over to the east, they get their shit worked.
BJ Penn would knock this guy out in under 2 minutes. He has no striking ability, and there is no way a weak fighter like him would be able to take BJ down.
the ref's help? the break in the action? his lame theatrics, grabbing the back of his head like he was the victim of a rabbit punch. He did the same against JZ Cavalcante.
Last fight for Aoki's tights :'(
