  • This is the music of retreat and defeat.

  • So beautiful yet so sad in this version.... Love this music.

  • At Richmond, the Tredeger Iron Works, turned out gun carriages and cannon for the Us Government.

  • @pitatapiu

Interesting, isn't it, the ironic things that Burns and McCullough brought out?

  • this is so moving.... several of the songs i have performed in our highschool. our military band had a civil war themed show one year and we did battle cry of freedom, johnny's come marching home, and battle hymn of the republic. And our choir did Johnny has gone for a soldier. very moving pieces...

  • This song makes me shed a tear every time that I listen to it. It is a shame that people don't pay more attention to their heritages. We shoud be proud to wake up every morning as Americans. :(

  • All these songs bring back so many memories. I remember being a small kid, running past the living room while my parents watched this, and always being infatuated with the music. This is the first time I've looked the soundtrack up, and the first time I've heard it in almost 20 years. It's amazing how it's stuck in my head all this time.

  • I hope that Stephen Spielberg uses this piece in his 2012 film called "Lincoln"

  • @Snicklefritz1979 Me, too. I don't know if Spielberg has any affiliation with Ken Burns or not, but it would be awesome if he used this bit of music in his Lincoln movie -- or any pieces of music that were in "The Civil War", for that matter.

  • Is this the (extended) version of the piano piece used to close every episode of the programme? That sounded slower and more mournful...

  • very beautiful and moving piece.

  • Written in 1862

  • I've been looking for this song for so long! I remember watching these docus in high school and this song stuck with me ever since. I love it. Happy belated 4th all! God Bless America!

  • sat through this in U.S. history, never been more enchanted by a documentary, all thanks to this music

  • does anyone know where the sheet music to this can be found?

  • I am finally glad I found this song,It is a great song.

  • This song has been stuck in my head for seven weeks, thanks to my history teacher who showed this video.

  • Damn Yankees or Dixie Chicks?

  • This is the best piano version I have heard. It sparkles.

  • “Enslave the liberty of but one human being and the liberties of the world are put in peril” - William Lloyd Garrison

  • I like the version in the film better, because it's slower & and sounds like it has more emotion.

  • @Freedom21stCenturi This is the version in the film, if you are talking about the Ken Burns series.

  • Thank you so much for posting these :)) !!!

  • the documentary is very moving. something textbooks can't quite capture. it was a part of our american history unit on the civil war

  • @PaulieRomanov

Except I don't believe this song appears in F3. Still funny though.

  • @PaulieRomanov Lol :D

  • Love the song. Whenever I hear just the melody, I can't decide whether to think about the Union or Confederate lyrics.

  • The American Civil war is a commercial industry just like the Second world war.

  • 142 years since Antietam

  • @Warcauser *148
