  • I love how Devin claims that he isn't into shred, yet when he does it he does it better and more interestingly than the majority of self proclaimed "shredders", and I like a lot of shred oriented music

  • @sm0kenmirrhurz92 I think his playing has a lot of soul to it.... not like 70s soul, but there's character to it. You can hear the Vai influence in there for sure.... and no matter what people say, Vai isn't a shredder, he's much more musical than that... Devin too.

  • @univoxone Agreed 100% on both Vai and Devin not being "shredders", though both of them could easily out"shred" most of these YouTube Yngwie-clones was my point, because theyre not as focused on one area of technique and more on music in general it almost opens the up to a higher technical level as a result.

  • Holy guitar tone, Batman!

  • fuckin deep peace !!

  • One of my favorite solos from any performer, Devin or otherwise... Thank you for posting this.

  • is that a Stratocaster, for real?

  • He used to swear by them during recording.

  • Heavy Fuckin Devy

  • FUCK! He's good.

  • I get chicken skin every time I hear that song. His music is so textured and emotional.

  • @jtolliver wow... the only comment i've found who can get close to summing up how amazing his music is :)

  • 2:00 that solo ALWAYS gives me goosebumps. Beautiful!

  • @Edd731 Same here.

  • Ki is beautiful, I cant wait to here Addicted. Devy has been one of my fave musicians of all time since I heard Detox (SYL) and then Bad Devil (Infinity). So much talent for one person to have lol. This vid is great, the sounds is fine dude. Keep em coming. DEVY! DEVY! DEVY! Seen him life about 3 times back around 2000/2001. Legend.

  • agreed Deep Peace is fucking amazing. has anyone listened to Ki yet? holy fuck. i hope he comes to WA or close to it so i can see him when he performs Ki and his next 3 albums

  • The greatest guitar solo of all time,

(but what do i know, i am a bassist)

  • nothing wrong with being a bass player man. i should know.

  • nah, never mind the bass playing issue..ITS THE BEST SOLO EVER....even comparable to jeff beck's where were you!!!

  • Kankuro1138 i cant agree with you more. devin townsed's music takes me to worlds that people would never imagine but me and his songs. syl and the dev band never get boring. its celestial

  • dev likes waltz a lot !!!! so do I !

  • Devin Townsend is one of those rare musicians that, the more you listen to his stuff, it just gets better and better. Even if you already like it, it never gets old. I dunno how to explain it, but all of his albums have been in my listening rotation for quite some time, no matter what other bands I listen to, it always comes back to Devin and SYL. Rock on mother fuckers!, everyone who appreciates his music has my respect as I know you love this shit as much as I do.

  • I withdraw my statement.

Deep Peace is not Devin Townsend's best song.

    Its the greatest song. Ever.

  • agreed.

i also love The Fluke ALOT.

    its a great song

  • In fact all of Terria was great.

  • Deep Peace is my favorite of Devin's solo songs.

  • Townsend = My hero

  • TOWNSEND, WILL YOU HAVE MAH BABIES!?

  • Hes My Uncle!!!

  • Townsend=My Uncle!!!

  • Magnificent..

  • I was in the very front row of this concert...I still have the setlist that Devin was using. My friends and I drove all the way from Detroit to Toronto in the dead of winter to see him. Probably the best concert I've ever been to.

  • can you prove it?

  • Hes My Uncle!!!

  • I think he blows steve vai out of the water. If you look past all of the technical shit and write a good song. After 12 years of playing I have realized that people don't want to hear my shredding or tapping. People want to hear an amazing medley of perfect notes accompanied by great (non vibrato)vocals. You can look at Satch, Vai, Malm, petrucci. They are technically amazing but they can't write a good song for shit.... Well maybe Satch haha.

  • umm petrucci writes for Dream Theater..

  • Your point?

  • nothing, I just thought i'd point out that the guitarist/musician you claim can't 'write a good song for shit' plays a major role in song-writing for arguably the most successful contemporary progressive metal band, and if you don't agree, their extensively wide international fan base do, as do the charts. so i think he deserves a little more credit then you so ignorantly give him.

  • Perfectly said. Besides out of that list, the only one that can't write for shit is Malmsteen. Steve Vai's mind is immense and he has written extremely diverse material throughout his career. Much more innovative and inventive than most other guitarists. Don't forget that he played with Zappa for years and has an extremely fortunate musical past (as well as a great ear for writing interesting music) whether you like it or not. Same goes for Petrucci like Melodicdeath666 said.

  • lol but you guys are also forgetting another thing that is a major factor in your debate... opinions. I love Yngwie's music, arpeggio's from hell is a great example of a beautiful piece or maybe even I am a Viking. Dream Theater and their discog is very mind blowing, you want something nice to the ears check out Metropolis or another one of their epic tunes, I can keep going on.

But when it comes down to business, I love Devin's diversity more than anything, he can do so many things righteously

  • Proghead- agreed. malmsteen was in his prime during the earlier stages of his career, with releases such as "rising force" and "marching out" where he produced some fine work. since then he hasn't came up with anything worth noting, other then mindless shredding in the structure of songs. Devin is just a gifted musician in almost all aspects; creative, diverse, master of production, playing. the point I was trying to convey to the original poster is that you should give credit at where its due.

  • Devin is slowly becoming my favourite musician ever.

  • HE IS MAKING A NEW ALBUM !

  • if you are joking, i want to know now. where did you hear this

  • It's true, he's making a new album. Has been since may, it's on his official forums.

  • i am fully erect

  • Why should I lie ? I'm not an idiot, everybody should be happy now.

  • oh man, i wish i was into his music when he was TOURING...now he's on a big ol' hiatus.

  • Devin rules,it's a shame the pussy radio stations in Reno wont play SYL or DTB.

    DEVY METAL!!!!!

  • nah, they just jerked eachother off, no penetration...that would just be gay...

  • amazing

  • que no pare nunca es un genio . vente para españa a meter caña buena buena

  • Devin Townsend tastes so fuckin' good!

  • i think Steve Vai rubbed off on him a bit when they were playing together...

  • yea, but at least he rubbed off from a GOOD musician

  • indeed...Steve Vai is who i stole all of my tapping technique from...

  • Deep Peace is one badass song. 2:21 to 2:48 sounds like something though doesnt it? Its really ringing a bell for some reason. Like Devin might have borrowed it from a classical song. Anyone know if thats all Devin or is it from a classical piece?

  • I'm pretty sure it's dev's own stuff even though it sounds like something out of an old classic waltz number or something. Probably just his influences showing through in a fantastic piece of music.

  • the begging of the solo and another part are kind of "recycled" from either Ocean Machine or maybe something off of Accelerated Evolution

  • Yea. It seems he likes using the arpeggio thing in the beginning alot for doing some improv stuff, at least to start off with.

  • 'AE' was post-'Terria' so maybe not ;)

  • surprisingly the intro isn't really improv... i've seen devin three times and he does the same silly intro to it everytime... maybe he didn't like the way it fit on the cd? who knows... still genius no matter what.

  • My favorite G-solo ever.

  • This solo kicks november rain and sweet child o' mine solos of that Slash sucker

  • Jotun

where was this show filmed ?

  • He plays it perfectly

  • God damn it I fucking love this man's music.

  • does anyone know if this song appears on any album of the DTB ??? ( i need to know )

  • the song is "Deep Peace" from "Terria"

  • Which by the way is not The Devin Townsend Band, but released under Devin's own name.

  • How can he play like that in open c? Scales are the same up and down the neck, and yet he still manages to write such beautiful music.

  • this solo is actually played in standard.

  • well, u can some of it in standard, but devin uses Open C exclusevly, with a few exceptions (vampira, Critic, things beyond things)

  • it's possible to play in standard, but open C is the true sound for it. the standard versions sound off kilter.

  • I believe they both sound amazing but Open C's sound is more authentic sounding in my opinion.

  • uplifting shit. i love this solo.

  • it's no wonder guys like darkest hour go to this guy asking him to record their next album. he's a tone and musical genious. his tone is face melting. he could play like pyscho and wow us but no he using a melodic solo to be even more awesome

  • devin townsend is a living god men....a fucking crazy genius who never deceived me and this solo is just one of the best guitar solos ever.DTB rules

  • Devin never lets me down... ever

  • One of the most musical solo of all time :)

  • I love his tone. Its so pretty. I like how with SYL its all crazy and Fuck you but with his solo he just does all this mindblowing musical stuff.

  • Propably the best guitar solo ever. I just love it so much.

  • it is a testament to the man's live sound that it sounds this good on what is obviously a camera phone, or a really shitty regular one.

  • devin is a fucking god

  • Amazing - beautiful solo. Dude is a fucking god...the only thing that pisses me off is that I've taken so long to discover him and SYL...

    Prolific, amazing musician...

  • yeah, he's an incredible musician!

    people saying he's crazy are bitchs he's a genious! = ) love Devin! and love S.Y.L = D

  • I love that song

  • Is he using the stilleto he talks about in his instructional video for this tone? Man I love it \m/ must be single coils pu's too, cant really see.

  • He uses a humbucker on that strat plus two seymour duncan hot rails in the single coil positions

  • he has a hotrail in the neck position.

  • I honestly think the Deep Peace solo is the most amazing solo I have ever heard.

  • exactement ce que je pensais de lui: un pur artiste!

  • heavy devie is the shit!

  • He is just amazing in every way. I really hope he finds his love for music again and comes back from seclusion in northern Canada.

  • damn .... nice solo !! devin is awesome !!!!

  • ...born to do exactly what he's doing...

    What a gift!

  • oh man this solos so damn good. sends chills down my spine everytime i hear it... Devys the man, 'NUFF SAID!

  • I'd say "Stagnant" is even cozier. :P

  • deep peace's solo sends shivers down my spine

  • amazing such a talented man

  • Best.... skullet.... ever.

  • the sound of guitar is absolut incredible !! This guy was influenced a lot by Vai

  • haha devin townsend was steve vais vocalist for a while

  • one of the coolest and most original riffs ever

  • DEVIN TOWNSEND THE LEGEND!!!

  • Devin is fucking godlike, and I think I could seriousy die happy knowing that I met him.

He is my favourite artist, and person like.. ever. Musical genious. This song is awsome. Deep Peace. Mmmm

  • Enorme !!

    DEVIN RULES !

  • I agree with the dude above me, although I must say that you forgot to mention Accelerated Evolution which I think is definitely up their with his best as well. To aiggis, this solo is from the Terria album and the song name is "Deep Peace." Hail to the king, Devin Townsend is a genius.

  • ocean machine and terria are the must-have devin townsend albums. their brilliance is beyond compare.

that is not to say that infinity, physicist, and the DTB albums are any lesser. they are also genius; the man, quite frankly, does no wrong. though the two mentioned above are largely considered his best work.

  • Does anybody happen to know if there is a recorded version of this song?

  • That is solo and ending of "Deep Peace" from "Terria" album played in medley (I think) with "Away" from "Accelerated Evolution". Whole "Deep peace" is half-acoustic, calm thingie, don't know if they ever played it live in complete.

  • Get the Synchestra CD with the DVD to hear this entire song recorded live in studio. best money you'll ever spend!

  • i had no idea tevin was such a good player. i mean i love strapping young lad but he really doesnt show off his playing there. this is fuckin awsome

  • Dude, listen to Infinity. One of the best albums you will ever hear

  • which is why i like devy. with syl, it's just balls-to-the-wall metal, no bullshit solos and cock measuring contests. he has nothing to prove to anyone.

  • plus he's said in interviews that he thinks rhythm is much more fun, at least to listen to. soloing can be fun to do, but not so much to thrash or bounce around to.

  • terria, too! in fact all DTB rules!!!

  • I'm spoiled rotten by this guy. I can't live without the Dev!

  • One of the greatest unknown musicians out there now. He's so goddamn talented. But those in the know love the Dev!

  • I've been checking out Devin related stuff all night on YouTube and I will give the devil his due. This guy is a genius.

  • YES!! The mad scientist of metal!

  • love this guy!

  • this guy is a genius when it comes to music. his work with steve vai, syl, and his devin townsend band.

  • well done!!

  • Whoa! That was Hevy Devy? Huge change from his SYL chug chug.

  • That was awesome. It's cool that Dev can play well and uses melody instead of flash.

  • Fuckin' Awesome!!

'Thats what I have to say'

  • yeah, i would have, but i only filmed with my digital camera, and as you'll hear, once the bass kicks in, my camera can't handle that volume, that's why like halfway through the solo i thought 'oh crap this will play on my digital came' wish i could have had it rolling the whole time, but ah well.

  • It would be cool to see some more from this show.

    great stuff!
