I love how Devin claims that he isn't into shred, yet when he does it he does it better and more interestingly than the majority of self proclaimed "shredders", and I like a lot of shred oriented music
@sm0kenmirrhurz92 I think his playing has a lot of soul to it.... not like 70s soul, but there's character to it. You can hear the Vai influence in there for sure.... and no matter what people say, Vai isn't a shredder, he's much more musical than that... Devin too.
@univoxone Agreed 100% on both Vai and Devin not being "shredders", though both of them could easily out"shred" most of these YouTube Yngwie-clones was my point, because theyre not as focused on one area of technique and more on music in general it almost opens the up to a higher technical level as a result.
Ki is beautiful, I cant wait to here Addicted. Devy has been one of my fave musicians of all time since I heard Detox (SYL) and then Bad Devil (Infinity). So much talent for one person to have lol. This vid is great, the sounds is fine dude. Keep em coming. DEVY! DEVY! DEVY! Seen him life about 3 times back around 2000/2001. Legend.
agreed Deep Peace is fucking amazing. has anyone listened to Ki yet? holy fuck. i hope he comes to WA or close to it so i can see him when he performs Ki and his next 3 albums
Kankuro1138 i cant agree with you more. devin townsed's music takes me to worlds that people would never imagine but me and his songs. syl and the dev band never get boring. its celestial
Devin Townsend is one of those rare musicians that, the more you listen to his stuff, it just gets better and better. Even if you already like it, it never gets old. I dunno how to explain it, but all of his albums have been in my listening rotation for quite some time, no matter what other bands I listen to, it always comes back to Devin and SYL. Rock on mother fuckers!, everyone who appreciates his music has my respect as I know you love this shit as much as I do.
I was in the very front row of this concert...I still have the setlist that Devin was using. My friends and I drove all the way from Detroit to Toronto in the dead of winter to see him. Probably the best concert I've ever been to.
I think he blows steve vai out of the water. If you look past all of the technical shit and write a good song. After 12 years of playing I have realized that people don't want to hear my shredding or tapping. People want to hear an amazing medley of perfect notes accompanied by great (non vibrato)vocals. You can look at Satch, Vai, Malm, petrucci. They are technically amazing but they can't write a good song for shit.... Well maybe Satch haha.
nothing, I just thought i'd point out that the guitarist/musician you claim can't 'write a good song for shit' plays a major role in song-writing for arguably the most successful contemporary progressive metal band, and if you don't agree, their extensively wide international fan base do, as do the charts. so i think he deserves a little more credit then you so ignorantly give him.
Perfectly said. Besides out of that list, the only one that can't write for shit is Malmsteen. Steve Vai's mind is immense and he has written extremely diverse material throughout his career. Much more innovative and inventive than most other guitarists. Don't forget that he played with Zappa for years and has an extremely fortunate musical past (as well as a great ear for writing interesting music) whether you like it or not. Same goes for Petrucci like Melodicdeath666 said.
lol but you guys are also forgetting another thing that is a major factor in your debate... opinions. I love Yngwie's music, arpeggio's from hell is a great example of a beautiful piece or maybe even I am a Viking. Dream Theater and their discog is very mind blowing, you want something nice to the ears check out Metropolis or another one of their epic tunes, I can keep going on.
But when it comes down to business, I love Devin's diversity more than anything, he can do so many things righteously
Proghead- agreed. malmsteen was in his prime during the earlier stages of his career, with releases such as "rising force" and "marching out" where he produced some fine work. since then he hasn't came up with anything worth noting, other then mindless shredding in the structure of songs. Devin is just a gifted musician in almost all aspects; creative, diverse, master of production, playing. the point I was trying to convey to the original poster is that you should give credit at where its due.
Deep Peace is one badass song. 2:21 to 2:48 sounds like something though doesnt it? Its really ringing a bell for some reason. Like Devin might have borrowed it from a classical song. Anyone know if thats all Devin or is it from a classical piece?
I'm pretty sure it's dev's own stuff even though it sounds like something out of an old classic waltz number or something. Probably just his influences showing through in a fantastic piece of music.
surprisingly the intro isn't really improv... i've seen devin three times and he does the same silly intro to it everytime... maybe he didn't like the way it fit on the cd? who knows... still genius no matter what.
it's no wonder guys like darkest hour go to this guy asking him to record their next album. he's a tone and musical genious. his tone is face melting. he could play like pyscho and wow us but no he using a melodic solo to be even more awesome
I agree with the dude above me, although I must say that you forgot to mention Accelerated Evolution which I think is definitely up their with his best as well. To aiggis, this solo is from the Terria album and the song name is "Deep Peace." Hail to the king, Devin Townsend is a genius.
ocean machine and terria are the must-have devin townsend albums. their brilliance is beyond compare.
that is not to say that infinity, physicist, and the DTB albums are any lesser. they are also genius; the man, quite frankly, does no wrong. though the two mentioned above are largely considered his best work.
That is solo and ending of "Deep Peace" from "Terria" album played in medley (I think) with "Away" from "Accelerated Evolution". Whole "Deep peace" is half-acoustic, calm thingie, don't know if they ever played it live in complete.
which is why i like devy. with syl, it's just balls-to-the-wall metal, no bullshit solos and cock measuring contests. he has nothing to prove to anyone.
plus he's said in interviews that he thinks rhythm is much more fun, at least to listen to. soloing can be fun to do, but not so much to thrash or bounce around to.
yeah, i would have, but i only filmed with my digital camera, and as you'll hear, once the bass kicks in, my camera can't handle that volume, that's why like halfway through the solo i thought 'oh crap this will play on my digital came' wish i could have had it rolling the whole time, but ah well.

well, u can some of it in standard, but devin uses Open C exclusevly, with a few exceptions (vampira, Critic, things beyond things)
