@ClassyOldMusic Thank you so much for sending me the lyrics to this beautiful song. Sunny greetings from the edge of the Aegean Sea, where today I was swimming in the deep water in Greece.
@janetathensbay Peggy Lee - How Deep Is The Ocean Benny Goodman & Peggy Lee Written by Irving Berlin Arranged by Eddie Sauter How deep is the ocean? How high is the sky? How much do I love you? I'll tell you no lie How many times a day Do I think of you? How many roses are Sprinkled with dew? How far would I travel To be where you are? How far is the journey From here to a star? And if you ever left me How much would I cry? How deep is the ocean? How high is the sky?
She mixed up the first line on both takes! It's supposed to start with "How much do I love you?" Not "How deep is the ocean"....Now having said that, it's still a great record with an awesome vocal. Peggy Lee was one of the best, this is more the responsibility of the A&R people listening to the session.
@zimnochmusic That was probably on purpose, and definitely not Peggy's decision (or error) but Benny's and the record producer. As a hired member of his band, she had to follow his instructions and those of his producer .... They must have wanted to start with the line that had the title in it, out of some misguided notion about what sounded more commercially appropriate.
@Carambabambasamba Thanks for responding. That does sound like a reasonable explanation. But having said that, it's still very jarring to hear the wrong words on an otherwise such a great recording.
@ClassyOldMusic The change in the climatic strain gives a whole new shade of meaning to the lyric. I think the original "lost you" is denoting more permanence to the love relationship (as in the only thing that could part us would be death). "If you ever left me" gives the possibility that it wasn't real from the beginning. By pop music standards, not much of a difference, but by the standard of one of the greatest love songs, I think it does matter. Thanks for pointing this out!
@zimnochmusic Absolutely. I don't know why the change, but "if I ever lost you, how much would I cry" is deep - as the ocean. I think that thought perfection. Just one teardrop's opinion ;)
She mixed up the first line on both takes! The A&R people should have caught that!! It's supposed to start with "How much do I love you?" Not "How deep is the ocean"....
Benny insisted on reversing the order of the lyrics to open with the song title. She actually recorded this twice; Benny didn't approve the first try which, as you might imagine, was absolutely as brilliant as the second. This vocal has been described "as still as a full moon moving gliding silently across a cloudless sky." Lee's work with Goodman was and is absolutely riveting and so different from what was to come from her.

She also changed the lyrics... "If I ever lost you"... to "And if you ever left me"... I like the change...
Peggy Lee... "one of the best"?... to me... her heavenly angelic beauty is represented and heard... in her God gifted voice.
