Haunting and melodic, a real journey of angst and introspection but somehow the song progresses in such a way that it offers the listener glimmers of self-rejuvenation towards the end. Ashcroft's oscillating voice has so much raw emotion attached to it which I find is complimented brilliantly by McCabe's subtle tyet sublime guitar work. This is a real hidden classic not just for fans of the verve but for fans of real meaningful music. A masterpiece that conioussers will savour. Incredible!!!!
the verve are my favourite band with no contest, a storm in heaven is my favourite albumn of all time, but this song is stand alone, it's absaloubtly amazing, i can't even put it into words. the wailing distant guitar behind the jangling acoustic at the begining, the whole song creeps up on you, the chorus has such an impact... makes me sad they didnt release an albumn between northern soul and a storm in heaven with more stuff like this on! i love the verve.
Who does Richard Ashcroft think he is? Hiding away these beautiful & haunting melodies as a B-sides of The Verve singles. That's not fair! This is so B.E.A.U.T.F.U.L.
@dosometh1ngpretty don't be mad at Richard Ashcroft cause it's not his fault that the Rolling Stones are A-Class ASSHOLES for destroying Verve. Because of Bittersweet Symphony the violins in the song was from the rolling stones so they sued them. So........

Bullshit! compaire the whole back catalogue of suede to the verve and suede win's every time. Go search for the living dead and my dark star. Both those songs were b sides. I admit both ashcroft and Andersons solo work is a little poor. But then so is the verves new album the only good song is sit and wonder. You only slate anderson cuz it was never cool to like suede.
u missed out my man. This was an anthem on my youth. If you haven't heard this have u heard other b-sides such as never wanna see you cry? There is a lot of Verve stuff out there if u look for it. Their b-sides were amazing
how good???????

Can anyone upload Monkey Magic? It's the only b-side from A Northern Soul that's not on here.

always the same - the b-sides are the best - more experimental, looser...

Man I need to listen to more Verve especially their B-sides. This is great stuff.

This song really moves me everytime I hear it! It doesn't deserve to be a b-side! It's even better than On Your Own imao!
Towards the end I think it sounds quite similar to Weeping Willow. It's got a similar chord pattern

It's almost like in the old days when you bought a 45 and it didn't say what is A or B side, so you didn't know which is which... It's that good!

Agreed, verve did some awesome b sides. This is one of my all time fave songs, and it's hidden away on a single.
I also agree that Sci Fi Lullabies is an absolute classic. Would love to see a Verve equivalent.
(It'll always be Verve to me, not The Verve)

Just amazing - so simple yet so powerful.
The Verve did some quality B-sides.
Have you heard Echo Bass? What a song!
ricey79 3 years ago
If you want quality b sides check out suede's b side album sci fi lullabies. These b sides wouldent even make that suede album and i am not joking.
MaturitySucks2008 3 years ago
Having not heard the Suede b-side album you speak of I cannot comment, but Brett Anderson couldn't tie Ashcrofts shoe laces - fact!
