It is never mentioned in the book or the game who started the nuclear war chronologically in 2012 but one of the rangers in Sparta base in the first game mentions how he was talking to sub captains on the radio back when the nukes fell. He says "noboday was expecting this to be the war that would end it all" hinting that it may not have been US vs Russia but Mutually Assured Destruction, probably by a nuclear war in a different conflict engulfing the world.

Loved Metro 2033 - the storyline, atmosphere and theme was amazing. Though it had flaws and felt very linear I still thouroughly enjoyed it. Seeing as this one has a higher budget I hope they fix the flaws like speech sync to the models mouths which could muck up at times. Regardless even if things like that isnt fixed I *KNOW*, I will still enjoy every minute of it.
