I think the big thing there was the fact he didn't look overwhelmed by any of it. You can't have a 'new' guy that has to figure out how to get his playing up to a level that can handle the material. Rob was there from the second he walked in the room. Plus, you have to have a positive, laid back, take-it-as-it-comes attitude to work with James and Lars.

Playing simple shit on two strings like he does in Manson is in no way preparation to join Metallica, and he even mentioned that when he joined A Perfect Circle that he had to grow as a bassist (and as cool as they are, they come in no way close to the riff power needed to play thrash). The runner up here is obviously Scott Reeder, who probly beats out Keenan only because he needs to keep doing Down/CoC.

@cronkrer Fuck you. Robert Trujillo is a great bassist and probably has greater technical skill than Scott Reeder, but he's not as good of a bassist as Scott. That man wrote some of the best basslines and has a sense of groove Trujillo will never have. Think I'm making this shit up? Look up Space Cadet by Kyuss. Trujillo's an amazing bassist but he'll never write anything as good as that.

Metallica has lucked out with bass players. They really don't know much about bass players. You can tell because of the release of St. Anger; they settled with Bob on bass (not a good idea). And Lars asking if Rob can play that fast with his fingers, the bassline is not that fast. What Metallica does know, are good musicians. Robert is such a solid bass player. They chose well.
