Dear SmokinHERBking I'm afraid I know very little about Lorrikeets however it sounds as if yours may be in need of a visit to a vet, He may be lacking in some trace element although I'm not qualified to make that judgement. Good luck on getting him on the road back to health.
i have a lorekeet, we have him for 12 years now, i love him soo much, but he's starting to pull out he's feathers. i dont know why though? we try to entertain him everyday and we feed him lorekeet nectar, and fruit juice. so i dont know if he's sick or just getting old?, i heard there bored whenever they do it. but like i said we play with him and let him run around in the house everyday, please reply
I love it how they know not to go for the artificial sweetners only the real sugar, i'm from New Zealand and I have one named Linda and they are very intelligent but very naughty if they are bored.
I have a couple of raindbow lorikeets as pets, and they're natural honey eaters, so love everything sweet. Even their vet-approved food powder mix is very sweet (sort of caramel vanilla taste).
The worst part is their poop. Because it's a very liquid diet (you mix the powder into a runny paste), their poop is like runny toothpaste to outright liquid.
the birds are on a constant sugar high cos that is part of their diet they love honey and nectar, the stuff I feed my lorikeet is literally loaded with sugar
@mumandtwins Ditto that - they don't eat seeds, like some people assume. They love sweet stuff and nectar. Our Rainbow Lorikeet (Zippy) also likes any sweet fruit - glace cherries, pineapple etc.
@combatwombat71 Skittles loves any fruit except strawberries he has a grand desire to demolise any apple oh and I have to watch my coffee when he is out and about cos he has been known to come up to my mug and taste the dregs LOL
i have a lorrikeet named polly and sugar has had no affect on him at all he lives our lifestyle and he eats what we eat he still has his sunflower seeds but he also feeds on bread, coco pops (kids left overs) pizza crusts sometimes even eats the ham from a hawaiian. he loves chocolate but i only allow him 1 square as moderation never hurt anyone and he even laps the leftover coffee in cups. he has been part of the family for 5 years and never has it affected him.
@sxcsassybratzy hope your feeding them nectar and fruit as well! and i def would not be feeding it chocolate its is poisonous to birds and lots of other animals ffs
Thank you for all your comments. I agree sugar is bad for lorikeets, I would shoo them away another time. I was so amazed to see the bird, in the UK we don't have birds like this landing on our patios etc. It was interesting that they had learned the difference between the sugar and the substitute, they wanted none of the substitute! I'm an artist and the colours of these beautiful birds was a delight for my eye and I would not want to contribute to their harm, I'm sorry if I did so.
@lindasgoluppi Honestly, I don't think you could do much to deter those little guys, seeing as, the moment you leave the table, they probably swoop in for the killl... Or sugar rush, either way.
@lindasgoluppi my house in melbourne (victoria) has a pear tree in the back yard and it has about 60 lorikeets living in it. we never get any pears because of them. when they decide to sing, its beautiful but most of the time its just annoying squawks. also, we get another 20 lorikeets a year.
Ditto for Avalon on Sydney's northern beaches :o). They've learned to like sugar because people have fed sugar to them by mistake. Rainbow Lorikeets are mostly pollen feeders and take a little nectar incidentally. Sugar is definitely no good for them.

Thank you for your posting. I love the idea that I share the same name as your lorikeet :-)

Pretty birds, very very messy birdcage.

@bersaba Thank you for sharing. I think I'll stick to seeing them in the wild when I'm in Oz, lols.

It sounds as if Lorikeets are as addicted to things that aren't good for them as the Human Race is:-)
I miss the wonderful sound of Australian birds, you guys in Oz are lucky to have such a wonderful variety. All the best.

It's not very bad... but at the same time it isn't good. It won't hurt them- their diet consists of high amounts of natural sugars anyway.

Ring 'wires' and they will tell you how bad sugar is for these birds...

sugar is very bad for lorrikeets and there are known cases of lorrikeets losing their feathers from people feeding them sugar and bread
