Coming to think of it, Squarepusher uses a ring mod quite a lot on his bass, and he's got it to do some really crazy awesome stuff. Proof that you make great music with a ring mod. You never know, he'd probably like this :)
It is utterly fantastic. You can spice up your sound so much, make it interesting and more alive. I have owned it for two months or so, every time I discover new sounds. The preset feature is one you can't miss. They change every week... lately I hooked up a Line6 FM4 to it, the modulator makes it very, very fat...!! With delay, chorus or a Q filter it will just blow your mind. BUY IT!!!
@UmaInProgress just got mine and it sounds sick with my bass. its very musical compared to others I've tried, but you can set it to sound as tripped out as you want. with an ehx bass microsynth running with it you can make some crazy funky music
this is truely unbelievable. i was gonna sell my whammy to buy this. not only will i be getting a polyphonic whammy, but also an insanely versatile ring mod, and a modulator. ehx, you guys have outdone yourselves. i must buy it.
I ordered this last week. With any luck I might be able to try it tomorrow. Easily the most exciting pedal by EHX at the moment (being a sucker for Ring Modulation), and that is not to say little since I definitely would consider buying most of them.
Hopefully I'll get to making a video and posting it soon.
I alsa bought the White Finger compressor with should be a nice complement.
I really dig electro-harmonix products (especially the 2880 since that's in a class of it's own), but if you have a high quality effects processor why would you need any of these? What am I missing?
@SadJustification ...sensless reply by you has failed. Again, why would you need something like the "Ring Thing", if/when you have a nice effects processor? It should obviously have a very quiet noise floor and no noticable delay to process the signal.
@TAXavier well that's a question of the guitarist, not the pedals. Personally i prefer a large pedal board that has each effect carefully tweaked to my own settings, while most effects processors only have so much control over the effects themselves. That said, there's nothing wrong with enjoying having the effects you want at your feet without having to worry about specifics. Sometimes someone knows what they want as opposed to someone who likes to play with whatever they can get.
I am a big fan of EHX pedals, so innovative and affordable. Just bought quite a few of them last month. Should have watched this before buying the POG2 (which is a great pedal itself). Thanks EHX!
Thank you. The whole vibe of that is sort of based on the Celtic harp music of OCarolan who wrote some of the most beautiful music of all time. Whats amazing is that the Ring Things pitch shifting can take a simple open chord and turn it into something amazing.
@Visualundeath Correct. It would be like carving a sculpture out of a pile of poop. It would still be a piece of art, but it would still be a huge pile of crap.
That's what makes it all the more interesting, to me at least! Its all about the challenge of making a cool sound. Sure, you can go buy a multi fx and have all your stock effect presets, but I like having to almost "fight" the pedal, and getting some pretty sweet alien tones as a result.
This seems like perhaps the most well-thought out Ring Mod
I have seen yet. Certainly you would not use this on every song.... but what is cool is to combine some OD/ Distortion w/ the the RM - then you get into some really out-there sounds- kinda surprised EH didn't include that in this pedal- tho they do give you the pitch-shift thing- that is nice. Gotta hand it to EH- they never take the predictable approach!!
The ring mod looks interesting. But I already have 2 other pedals that do pitch shifting and whammy fx. Too much overlap with these kinds of pedals these days IMO. I don't like buying the same function over and over. Come out with a ring mod for <$100 without the other stuff and I'll bite.
I remember back when in the olden days, I wanted to build a ring modulator with a pitch tracker in Reaktor... but no-one could understand the purpose of that. this is it!!! hehe :)
Its an 80's or 90's strat with a Kahler tremolo. They used to have a setup where the lock nut went behind the regular nut for better intonation and to make it easier to match the fretboard radius.

If i use an expression pedal in pitch mode can i set it to have one harmony in heel down and another in toe up?

Nice demo - thanks. This one seems more versatile than most but I've yet to find a worthwhile way of using mine (GX700) except slow trem.
