I saw them when they came to Cleveland at the Q (then Gund Arena) on this tour. I still remember the show like yesterday - the BEST concert I ever went to. Entwistle did a 20 minute bass solo. They played non-stop for 3 hours. All their best stuff from The Kids Are Alright and My Generation through Eminence Front and You Better You Bet. I also saw them in 1996 when the did the entire Quadrophenia album on tour. Both shows were fantastic!
@1olrocker I was there as well and feel the same way about it....they fn' rocked through that whole show. great vibe in cleveland that night everywhere i went...
I´m not agree with the critics to Zak. He shows that is a true beast playing the drums. Moonie shadow is very long, sure, but Zak is one of the greatest drummers of the world.
@cpelta Well no. He's very good but he isn't "one of the greatest drummers of the world". That's putting him at the level of drummers like Keith Moon, John Bonham, Neil Peart, etc, which he isn't at.
@vedderfan94 Zak is much subtler than Moon, but then again, a herd of stampeding elephants, being srafed by F-18's bing chased by surface to air missles is subtler than Keith
Yes, ox092, you know very well what you have said. Before, bass had not a proper voice, it was a hidden, murky instrument but Entwistle is the first musician in the history in playing the bass guitar as a leader instrument. After, Fraser, Lee, Pastorius, Cheap Trick bassist and more but the ox is the absolute pioneer. And you have the reason. Surely, Entwistle had a musical education (french horn..., as you say) very different in the epoch.
Nobody is comparable to The Ox playing the bass. Perhaps a very young Andy Fraser had got the same talent but John begins to play in 1964. John Paul Jones? Great musician but technically inferior. Entwistle is the absolute pioneer. Lee, Pastorius, Flea and other excellent bassists come after, when the genious had defined the style playing a bass, giving a proper voice to the instrument.
actually john played in 1959 thats when he got his carerr with the who in 1964. I think there are other good bassists I just think its either they aren't as well talented or educated enough to improvise so well as John Entwistle. I've listened to a thousand other bassists but they can't get the bass play a constant different note solo that are different fill ins. like Entwistle he has the knowledge and theory from his trumpet and french horn.
Entwistle was an absolute beast at bass. Theres hardely any1 who played as good as him during the early days. idc what are shit people say about other good bassists out there these days. He is literally one the best bassists to have ever live in my opinion.
wow ya mean ya dont have ta be hot and talentless to be a rock star? , THE WHO burn on this --even if they woudnt go to hollywood on american idol , fuck todays shit wannabee corporate cookie cutter garbage and fuck simon fuck paula ,and fuck randy , fuck that show
BTW, I've seen them live iwth Ox and then with Pino on bass, both times with Zack Starky and they were awesome. I have nothing bad to say about him and would expect anyone else to play just as hard.
You guys are nuts. Zack Starky is a great drummer. He doesn't try to be Keith Moon, he tries to play the songs like Keith which requires some lunacy on the part of the drummer. Give the guy a break, it can't be easy to copy Keith Moon.
I disagree. On the base solo, Moon gives way more space, and the bass comes out big in a response to the vocal line. (The girl I used to...etc) I am referring to the original recording, can't speak to any other live performances.
and i don't like starkey- it just seems like he's trying too hard to be keith instead of just playing the drums.
and it doesn't really matter if there's any live footage of moonie playing the song cuz moonie's the one who played it on the record. and it's waaayyyy better than this guy.
Dude, I knew Keith was dead all along. I'm a big fan and wish it were otherwise. But I think Who fans should be happy and proud at having Zak as his replacement. Such talent and dedication. I believe he kept the Who alive this century, so he does not deserve 100% derogatory comments IMO.
I have seen the errors of my ways and have posted this Top Ten list (again in no particular order, you can decide that for yourself). Neil Peart Kieth Moon JOHN BONHAM Buddy Rich Animal Phil Rudd (AC/DC) Ringo Starr Stewart Copeland Mitch Mitchell Ginger Baker
The only reason people put John Bonham on top is because of the band he was in. Keith Moon was just an all around beast. John Bonham was a master, but no Keith Moon.
And he made the band better...Just like Keith did. Both bands had members that could not be replaced at all. I would put Bonham on top because I do like Zeppelin more than The Who, but I also think Bonham was more innovative. Don't get me wrong, so was Keith, and his speed and technique will never be matched by anyone.
True. But you love Zepp more, and I adore The Who. But, I think me and you agree, Moonie and John on top. I could throw Neil Peart in there for good measure.
Yeah, haha, it really would come down to preference. And yes, I would put those two at the top as well. I think I'd put Mitch Mitchell before Neil Peart on my list.
Yeah, and they'll still sound better than anybody else in history. You will never be built like Roger, or play like Pete you total loser. Who the F*#% are you?!!!

la verdad esq no es como Moon, pero dsd él, ha sido el mejor con diferencia...a mi me parece que lo hace increible con Pete y Roger, en otros videos se ve mejor!!:)
This is one of my favourite Who songs. Its awesome because Ringo and Keith used to hang out and Ringo didn't want his son to play drums so Keith taught him and now Zac is the drummer. I love this song
Amityrockstarx if you dont like wasp just say so. the wasp version does justice to the who version. blackie can sing and he has one of the unique vocals in hard rock.
I heard the WASP version of this.. Sounds like the same song but with much crappier vocals and somewhat crappier everything else. I don't see how any cover of this song can compare to the original, only The Who can play it best in my opinion.
what??? are u serious? so for u ace or bruce are not good guitarists? or maybe peter chris or carr dont know how to beat a drum?? eh maybe paul stanley doesnt have a good voice either??? PLZ GET SERIOUS
i agree theyve been my fav band since i knew what music was... i have and love every album. the only reason i made that comment was because i had just seen a kiss video and i wanted to say how disgusting it is that so many people like them...the who destroy them in every way.
I always say that Gene Simmons bass playing wouldn't be effected even if he was wearing boxing gloves. Bruce was good but Ace could barely stand up, never mind play. And when Peter Chris played, it looked like he was going to faint or have a heart attack. Ironically, Eric Carr did.
ive always viewed them as entertainers more thn musicians. i give them credit for forming the empire that is the kiss army... but the kiss army is proof of how stupid people really are or at least how people dont know musicianship...
I agree with you about entertainers/musicians. I'm not a big fan, though I have seen them twice (for free). Once when I was 17 and I thoroughly enjoyed the show. The 2nd time was when my band opened for them on their "final" tour. As a "professional" musician I was surprised to find that I rated their show as one of the best I've seen. Sure they dragged out all the old hits and gimmics and really cheesed it up, (and I was laughing ALOT) but it was pretty cool.
fair enough... i myself have seen the who, yes, the moody blues, van halen, etc... so if i was to bring my self so low as to see kiss i dont think it would compare to my concert experiences...
hit the nail on the head... im 19 and play bass... but im just ok... im fairly new to the instrument even though my love for it started with my love for music some 15 years ago... anyways im guessing your being sarcastic but your right i do know everything and i would be a good adition... just kidding. so what kinda music you play?
fuck yea this song is defo down as one of rock's greatest. gotta love the who, jus 1a them bands we all love. the fukin energy aswel these guys wil never b 4gotten

Pete Townshend is one guitarist who just keeps getting better with age.
We miss you John Entwistle..RIP, Moonie too.

This is one of my favourite Who songs. Its awesome because Ringo and Keith used to hang out and Ringo didn't want his son to play drums so Keith taught him and now Zac is the drummer. I love this song

I would love to hear if there is a version of this song from one of the tours with Simon Phillips drumming.

Amityrockstarx if you dont like wasp just say so. the wasp version does justice to the who version. blackie can sing and he has one of the unique vocals in hard rock.
niranmojo 4 years ago
I heard the WASP version of this.. Sounds like the same song but with much crappier vocals and somewhat crappier everything else. I don't see how any cover of this song can compare to the original, only The Who can play it best in my opinion.
Amityrockstarx 4 years ago
I still gotta say Gene Simmons - "Pioneer of the One Note Bass Solo" - is the best.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
(like throwing a cat into a dog show)

This comment has received too many negative votes show
its hard to believe a band so famous as kiss can, in reality, have so little talent...
profjohnfrinks 4 years ago
what??? are u serious? so for u ace or bruce are not good guitarists? or maybe peter chris or carr dont know how to beat a drum?? eh maybe paul stanley doesnt have a good voice either??? PLZ GET SERIOUS
jerraras 4 years ago
its just common knowledge...
profjohnfrinks 4 years ago
You can't even begin to compare Kiss with the Who. Even the guys in Kiss would agree, even Gene Simmons.
skiingisgoodforyou 4 years ago 3
what has this to do with a video by The Who? Get a damn life FFS.
celticfan60 4 years ago
Go fuck yourself. The Who is the greatest Rock group ever.
CubsRule06 4 years ago
i agree theyve been my fav band since i knew what music was... i have and love every album. the only reason i made that comment was because i had just seen a kiss video and i wanted to say how disgusting it is that so many people like them...the who destroy them in every way.
profjohnfrinks 4 years ago 5
I always say that Gene Simmons bass playing wouldn't be effected even if he was wearing boxing gloves. Bruce was good but Ace could barely stand up, never mind play. And when Peter Chris played, it looked like he was going to faint or have a heart attack. Ironically, Eric Carr did.

ive always viewed them as entertainers more thn musicians. i give them credit for forming the empire that is the kiss army... but the kiss army is proof of how stupid people really are or at least how people dont know musicianship...
profjohnfrinks 3 years ago
I agree with you about entertainers/musicians. I'm not a big fan, though I have seen them twice (for free). Once when I was 17 and I thoroughly enjoyed the show. The 2nd time was when my band opened for them on their "final" tour. As a "professional" musician I was surprised to find that I rated their show as one of the best I've seen. Sure they dragged out all the old hits and gimmics and really cheesed it up, (and I was laughing ALOT) but it was pretty cool.
thelowmax 3 years ago
fair enough... i myself have seen the who, yes, the moody blues, van halen, etc... so if i was to bring my self so low as to see kiss i dont think it would compare to my concert experiences...
profjohnfrinks 3 years ago
How old are you? 19? Wanna join my band? I want to get you while you still know everything.
thelowmax 3 years ago
hit the nail on the head... im 19 and play bass... but im just ok... im fairly new to the instrument even though my love for it started with my love for music some 15 years ago... anyways im guessing your being sarcastic but your right i do know everything and i would be a good adition... just kidding. so what kinda music you play?
profjohnfrinks 3 years ago
I'm a bass player too. All my bands have been of a funk/rock/metal variety. I am an old fogey.
Did you know that Entwistle helped design the first round wound Rotosound Swing bass strings?
