i want to ask is this lens tokina 11_16mm is nice also for all shots? can u tell me what is the best lens for all occassions because i dont want to buy too much lens cause of budget
dom, since this is a dx lens we are not multiplying those numbers(11-16) by the crop factor for 35mm equivelent yes? so on a dx camera this is gonna be actually 11-16mm?
@fateless78 I dont think i can answer you without making it sound confusing. but the answer is no, if you are looking for 35mm equivelent it is the same as 16-24mm
@dombower thanks mate i just figured the answer too, so regardless dx or fx lens; you multiply by the crop factor if the sensor is dx. the only difference is that dx lenses are low capacity and drop the light in smaller area, thats probably why they are cheaper. anyway the numbers are numbers they are focal lenght in mm, they dont write equivalent of anything, just what it is
@fateless78 spot on! i actually couldnt have said it better myself. I may steal you comment and paste it when others ask the same question on other videos! you are learning super fast!
@dombower lol go ahead and steal but then let me make an addition/correction to make it even more clear "...dx lenses are low capacity and drop a smaller portion of the image in smaller area (so the coverage on the smaller sensor remains same)..."
@dombower ver 2 probably will add some extra coatings etc on the lens.Thats what happened with other tokina models at least.Don't think its gonna be a great upgrade.
No it just means from 11mm all the way to 16mm the aperture has the ability to remain at f-stop 2.8.. unlike other lenses will say 10-20mm 3.5-5.6.. which means it will change usually from f-stop 3.5 @10mm all the way to f-stop 5.6 @ 20mm!
Hi, thanks for the review, I have a question for ya.
I have nikon d7000 with twin kits and now i wanted to upgrade my lenses. Could you please recommend me a good lens for indor shooting ,parties, and scenery shooting. I was thing Nikon 55mm. What do u think?
good idea im actually thinking the 1.4 50mm but i was thinking about getting both, the more i learn about videos and photos i realize i just gotta bite the bullet and spend the money
Hey great review, im considering getting this lens or the 50mm 1.8, mostly for low light and shooting music videos, do you think its a good idea to own for a t3i? or should i get a full sensor size camera?
@shiestytracks i cant really answer that for you i have no idea about your photography or your level or your work load. check the blog for a bunch of tips. dombower.blogspot
@shiestytracks the t3i is an awesome buy for the price.. a full frame camera will run you like 3 times the price.. but both cameras shoot 1080p HD video.. just the sensor is bigger on the full frame.. But it is pricy!
@shiestytracks i cant really answer that for you i have no idea about your photography or your level or your work load. check the blog for a bunch of tips. dombowerphoto.blogspot
@shiestytracks I'd say get both. The 50mm 1.8 is only 100$ and is a great inexpensive portrait lens that anyone should have and Tokina 11-16mm is the only wide-angle for crop sensors that goes to f2.8 so I'd say you wouldn't regret the purchase! I have both myself and don't regret it. :)
I've a question. I've got a D3000 and I want a fast wide angle lens, such as the 11-16, but it won't AF in my camera. I don't know if focusing in manual should be a trouble or not... so what fast wide angle would you get for the d3000? thank you very much!
Thanks for an in depth lens review. I just got this lens for a canon 60D, primarily to shoot video. So far so good. I love the clarity and that it has almost no fisheye warping whatsoever. Some people like that fisheye distortion, but I can only see it being useful in a few scenarios: security cam pov, door peep hole, etc. The build is rock solid and I recommend it after trying the similar Tamron, and Canon lenses.
Dom, I know this video was made a while ago but would you recommend this lens over the new sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6? Especially in low lighting situations? Thanks in advance!
I am thinking about buying this lens. But as a nightclub photographer, I work in extreme lightning conditions and I'll probably use it at F2.8 all the time. Can this baby handle the constantly changing lights at a club, strobes flashing and all? Also I shoot at pretty high ISO rates. Does it remain its quality in these extreme conditions? I'd love to get your opinion on this.
Why do you hold your camera like that..with the zoom/focus hand not under the lens for more stabalization? i know you are a professional and from your images i know your a badass but that shooting style is kinda "amaturish" you know what i mean..people who dont know how to hold a camera hold it like that...do you find holding it like that gives you better results? or is it just personal preference?
@Mozo901 boy oh boy you look closely at the video.
remember that in this video i am sitting on my bed and taking pictures of my wall for a review, its not like i am doing a photoshoot with it. on another note when you have uwa lenses there is very little affect of hand vibration so generally unless i am doing a slow shutter speed and not using a tripod it doesnt really matter.
I just bought this lens. Image quality is top-notch but the autofocus is absolutely awful. Often when focusing on infinity it will provide a focus lock at around 1 meter, sometimes even less. It's a known problem with this lens, but I'm surprised by just how bad it is on some examples.
So, great image quality, but be prepared to shoot in manual focus.
@brindyman dont forget. there is a difference between UWA and fisheye. UWA keeps all the lines in an image straight. UWA will generally correct barrel distortion. Fisheye purposely does not correct barrel distortion. So it looks like you are looking through a fish eye.
Common problem...I too have major problems with my 50D. The AF function produces seemingly random focal distances. I've heard of people having to exchange multiple units before they get a good example.
I got this lens the other day. It won't AF on my D3000, but I'm enjoying the manual focus experience and as I'm quite new to photography anyway it's no hassle learning!
Cheers for the video Dom, watched it many times when deciding my next lens and glad I did my research. Well happy!
help pls ! anyone know where can i get tokina at-x pro 828 f2.8 seems tokina not producing it anymore , any1 know where to buy ? I am from Singapore tks!
Ok cool, Now I just gotta figure if this is something I NEED but I definitely want it. Seems like the only good wide angle lens with a small f stop that has a reasonable price.
Does this make any noise when manually focusing? I will be using it primarily for video recording on a Canon 7D so all the noise from auto focusing would be terrible but I really only manual focus so I should be fine, right?
Between regular lenses like 18-200mm vs Ultra Wide angle 11-16mm... which is better if I want to do panorama or photo stitching? say around 8 picture in 2x4.
@dombower sorry.. what I meant is that 2x4 is 2 column x 4 rows of photo... so all in total 8 photo... the purpose of this is to make an even wider and high resolutions photo. But I think you are right it is better to get Uwide anyway.... sorry for my silly question.. :)
@Cybercreeps If you try to stitch shots with the ultra wide you may have trouble due to distortion around the edges. Probably better off using the 18-200 in the 35-50mm range.
@HellbellyUK em no, this ultra wide doesnt have much distortion, the 18-200 has a lot more and when you get to 35mm it is not very wide for a panorama.
@dombower You missed the point. Doing multi-shot stitches as mentioned by @cybercreeps is best done with a lens in the 35-50mm range. Any wider and the edges of the frames are harder to match. Remember he is planning to stitch 8 images in a 2x4 arrangement. If he needs a wide aspect ratio he can just shoot more frames (2x6, 2x8 etc.)
@Cybercreeps@Cybercreeps If you try to stitch shots with the ultra wide you may have trouble due to distortion around the edges. Probably better off using the 18-200 in the 35-50mm range.
@sinnerbuyer tricky one there. it is a dx lens but when i had it on a nikon d700 by the time you zoom it into 15-16mm it covers the full frame. but prob will need cropping of some sort in post
Hi, will this lens work on my 550d using the standart Nikon to Canon adaptor? Basically is this mount the same as the old AI mount from Nikon's 50 F1.4 you're showing in the how to put nikon lens on canons video ? Have you tried this combination? Asking as the Nikon version of this Tokina are £50 cheaper then the Canon mounts, and an adaptor cost £7 from China, and I don't mind waiting a bit to save a couple of quids
@iwatch3d yeah but you could also just buy the canon mount version of the lens. if you get the nikon version for your canon camera that would be a bit odd.
@dombower I don't mind it being a bit odd, I'llaround £100 altogether as i need two for 3D and the Nikon mount are £50 cheaper than the Canon mount. I was just asking if you've tried it using an adaptor on your 7D, any vignetting or other issues ?
@iwatch3d but you wont have aperture control it will be stuck down at f22 unless you buy the adapter which has aperture control which is around 300pounds and has a waiting list of about 3 months. you also loose auto focus etc. get the canon!
@dombower right, that explains it all, thanks again, now I know that these adaptor are only good for the old nikon lens where there is aparature control built in the lens. That's exactly the info I needed to know, I thought that these adaptor do allow you to operate the lens from the camera, thanks to you I now know I was wrong.Great advise, keep on making your very informative videos!
@dombower Yep,that's the way to do it,even ask Jared Polin, these guys know the score, mines now on order thanks to Dom + Jared's reviews. HINT,if both recommend it then it's a sure win to take there advice. FroKnowsPhoto lol
do u use any filters on it? i heard it will create shadows if ur using filter..
and also how abt the CA? currently im using tokina 12-24mm f4.. man.. the CA drives me crazy.. im just thinking if 11-16mm more better in CA control im gonna change my 12-24 to 11-16
so, i've already put a comment under your review of the sigma 10_20mm lens so here same question: is it a good lens for indoor-room photography, does it have a good quality compared to the kit-lens and what would u take if you take these two lenses or any other (ultra)wideangle lens without minding the price?
@4DSquad you planing on doing any portraits of fashion? get the flash. if yoru planning on doing some traveling, indoors shoots etc get the wide angle
Hey lad, great reviews uve got here, i would like to ask for your opinion.
I've got a d700 and i was looking for a good alrounder lens in the mid range zoom, i've look for the nikon 24-120 vr, but for what i've read it is to soft. What would u recommend for and fx sensor. Thanks
Nice review but you might try to put a sheet of paper in front of you with some acronyms like SMW (4:51) on it to help ur memory rather than trying to read them from the ceiling. ;)
Some script maybe, this review is quite chaotic sometimes. Not trying to be pain in the ass - just my 2 cents. Quite informative.
you seem highly knowledgeable, but i'm a beginner. so if i buy a Olympus pen e and an adapter to full size slr what wide ange lense would you buy for stills and short videos. auto focus? thanks, and any help would be deeply appreciated.
Uhh yeah, 550D and all the xxxD series never had any inbody focusing motor... it's just that Canon's EF and EF-S lense are ALL BUILT IN Focus... which is hard for Canon user to have Auto focus from other lens manufacturer
Do you mean all canon have inbody focus motor? if you mean that, then you are wrong.
I'm considering THE Tokina Lens above for Canon Mount. If That lens does not have shift-lens focus built into the Lens, it will NEVER AF on canon bodies that does not have IN-body focus motor.
The fact that most canon lens AFs on Canon is that, they are all "EF" and "EF-S" lens... EF= Electronic Focus..built into the Lens.
If I'm wrong again, PLEASE CORRECT ME magermax000.
As far as I know (AFAIK :-)), you can use AF-S and AF-D lenses on the D5000. So THE ANSWER IS YES.
In fact, the best answer I can give you, as you are shooting with a Nikon crop factor (DX) DSLR, is that you can use every lens Sigma, Tokina, Tamron, and of course Nikon makes.
Same story with Canon models that have 2, 3 or 4 digits before the D (this means : 50D, 550D, 1000D). These models are compatible with the EF and EF-S mounts. (just check the name of the lens)
i want to ask is this lens tokina 11_16mm is nice also for all shots? can u tell me what is the best lens for all occassions because i dont want to buy too much lens cause of budget

@HellbellyUK em no, this ultra wide doesnt have much distortion, the 18-200 has a lot more and when you get to 35mm it is not very wide for a panorama.
dombower 1 year ago
@dombower You missed the point. Doing multi-shot stitches as mentioned by @cybercreeps is best done with a lens in the 35-50mm range. Any wider and the edges of the frames are harder to match. Remember he is planning to stitch 8 images in a 2x4 arrangement. If he needs a wide aspect ratio he can just shoot more frames (2x6, 2x8 etc.)

From you point of view which is better or recommend to get the sigma 10-20mm f3.5 or tokina 11-16mm f2.8? Thanks

I've read a number of complaints about focussing issues with this lens. Any thoughts?
toynoise 1 year ago
what if attach this on fullframe/film camera?
visible vignette through all the range?
sinnerbuyer 1 year ago
@sinnerbuyer tricky one there. it is a dx lens but when i had it on a nikon d700 by the time you zoom it into 15-16mm it covers the full frame. but prob will need cropping of some sort in post
dombower 1 year ago
@sinnerbuyer Severe vignetting on wide end, on 5D MkII FF.
HSBurn 1 year ago
@sinnerbuyer I personally use my Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 as a 16mm prime on full-frame. It gets a little soft in the corners but it's good enough for me!

Hi, will this lens work on my 550d using the standart Nikon to Canon adaptor? Basically is this mount the same as the old AI mount from Nikon's 50 F1.4 you're showing in the how to put nikon lens on canons video ? Have you tried this combination? Asking as the Nikon version of this Tokina are £50 cheaper then the Canon mounts, and an adaptor cost £7 from China, and I don't mind waiting a bit to save a couple of quids
iwatch3d 1 year ago
@iwatch3d yeah but you could also just buy the canon mount version of the lens. if you get the nikon version for your canon camera that would be a bit odd.
dombower 1 year ago
@dombower I don't mind it being a bit odd, I'llaround £100 altogether as i need two for 3D and the Nikon mount are £50 cheaper than the Canon mount. I was just asking if you've tried it using an adaptor on your 7D, any vignetting or other issues ?
iwatch3d 1 year ago
@iwatch3d but you wont have aperture control it will be stuck down at f22 unless you buy the adapter which has aperture control which is around 300pounds and has a waiting list of about 3 months. you also loose auto focus etc. get the canon!
dombower 1 year ago
@dombower right, that explains it all, thanks again, now I know that these adaptor are only good for the old nikon lens where there is aparature control built in the lens. That's exactly the info I needed to know, I thought that these adaptor do allow you to operate the lens from the camera, thanks to you I now know I was wrong.Great advise, keep on making your very informative videos!
iwatch3d 1 year ago
@dombower Yep,that's the way to do it,even ask Jared Polin, these guys know the score, mines now on order thanks to Dom + Jared's reviews. HINT,if both recommend it then it's a sure win to take there advice. FroKnowsPhoto lol

do u use any filters on it? i heard it will create shadows if ur using filter..
and also how abt the CA? currently im using tokina 12-24mm f4.. man.. the CA drives me crazy.. im just thinking if 11-16mm more better in CA control im gonna change my 12-24 to 11-16
cheers..
jasonfoe 1 year ago
@jasonfoe It's okay with most regular filters. Try not to stack filters though or else you will get a vignette.

so, i've already put a comment under your review of the sigma 10_20mm lens so here same question: is it a good lens for indoor-room photography, does it have a good quality compared to the kit-lens and what would u take if you take these two lenses or any other (ultra)wideangle lens without minding the price?
Froopish 1 year ago
@Froopish much better compared to the kit lens, i owuld take this one as it is an f2.8

Hey Dom, have a bday coming up and torn between getting Tokina 11-16 or a SB600.
I don't have a flash and I currently have 35 1.8, 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8. Need a flash but I'd love an ultra wide! What would you get?
Take care

@4DSquad you planing on doing any portraits of fashion? get the flash. if yoru planning on doing some traveling, indoors shoots etc get the wide angle

How hard is it to manual focus? cuz I'm considering this for Canon 550D but 550D does not have inbody focus motor.. :(
HatroVille 1 year ago
@HatroVille really?
dombower 1 year ago
@dombower
Uhh yeah, 550D and all the xxxD series never had any inbody focusing motor... it's just that Canon's EF and EF-S lense are ALL BUILT IN Focus... which is hard for Canon user to have Auto focus from other lens manufacturer
HatroVille 1 year ago
@dombower yep, curious to know what its like on the 550d body if youve tested it

@magermax000

Thing like that.. SMV, Silent Wave Motor.

@dombower LOL!!!
tony77tony77 1 year ago
@pSa7m Haha! Nice one ;-)
