Class reminds me a bit of fools gold - 2nd coming i underated album some classics on it - Reading the rise and fall of the stone roses at the minute - great insight into the band - never knew the roses began life as a five piece and they were up in court for pollocking a merc haha class band !
everyone asks what's your fave roses tune? you could pick something obvious like fools gold or resurrection . Be cool like me and say somethings burning
First time hearing this song...Smooth Jazzy Funky Deep elements with that "taka taka taka taka"in the background....sooo nice! Thx to my girlfriend for putting me on!....
I"m a very late SR discoverer, but this track is very nice and kind of jazzy. Reminds me of early Traffic. Anyone out there old enough to remember them? ;-) Cheers from Houston, Texas
@sallie46 I'm not old enough to remember traffic but i have heard some of their stuff. I think Traffic an the roses both have a laid back style of playing. They never seem to try too hard an i think you can hear this in their music. On second coming which in my opinion is an excellent roses album, you can hear the blues influence more than their earlier work and its this i think that the critics did not like, they expected an album just like their debut album. Listen to Second coming its awesome
The only criticism there should be towards Second Coming is that the interval was too long between the albums and by then the seeds were sown for a new movement in music. The Roses could have pissed into heaven otherwise...
man is this song sublime. mysterious, subdued, melodic, hypnotic and catchy as hell. That guitar lick that brings the song back around after the chorus while the bass drops out is some tastiness.
@honuman39 I was listening to this song on autorepeat while I was high days ago.. it was amazing. There were tons of intruments, each note of them hitting my soul and my mind like pillows. It felt so good. I can't explain.. this song drove me to the stars.
The "Lost Demos" version of this on the special edition Stone Roses album is almost unrecognisably different! Still an absolutely knockout tune though.
For my Music Technology A-level, I did a Santana style arrangement of this. It really worked- because it uses the same chords as a Santana song called 'Oye Como Va': Am D- but so do alot of songs- not a rip off or anything.
It's not the most eventful song in the world, but the point is that The Stone Roses take these laid back grooves, and craft a good song out of it- like with Fools Gold.
ian said that instead of puttin 1 love out as there next single they should have gone with this,..this is the direction ian wanted to go put john went all led zep,..
stone roses the album is like a big old English tree. it has strong trunk (the album itself) but his roots (B-sides) holding it as strong as the trunk. roses got the best B-sides.
BTW tards, Turns Into Stone was a money spinner for Silvertone. It's a bad compilation album with a clever title ('turns into stone' being the last words ian sang on a TSR 'a' side for a very long time, as the group did almost literally turn (in)to stone(d)).
It's the 12" singles of Elephant Stone, One Love and Fools Gold, the B sides of Made Of Stone, She Bangs The Drums, cos Silvertone obviosly felt they hadn't released them enough already o.0
Reni on the vibraphone... under-used talent, they should have got him to play more instruments in the studio. Hell.. they should have done a Beatles and let him do lead vocal on some of the tracks.
Wouldn't the true Stone Roses fans class 'Turns Into Stone' as an album, in which this song featured as the last track...I certainly would, furthermore for all the wankers who says that 'The Second Coming' is shit...actually listen to it and then think about all the crap bands who are out today who couldn't knock out a turd, let alone a song which could stand up against any track on that album. This album is very under-rated..and that's why it is popular, it was the critics who slammed it..Cocks
totally agree. the second coming is for me probably as good as the first album. turns into stone is basically the stone roses third album, much in the same way as i class masterplan by oasis to be one of their best records.
@MrManchester316 - sorry to disagree, the second coming was a good album by any standards but i didn't need the press to tell me i was disappointed with the new sound, and neither did alot of roses fans. No, the second coming is shite, because it sounded generic. Even One Love was more 'fun'. I personally wanted more Somethings Burning. The Roses had a habit of releasing B sides that should've been double As. Where Angels Play, Going Down, Mersey Paradise, I could go on..
Don't you think you should actually give the stone roses credit for this album seeing though they was trying for a different musical direction, and not trying to sound like the samey wank music we have had to contend with with the brit-pop scene. The Roses did release b sides which were deserving of the a side status, but which band doesn't do this!! and a lot of roses fans LOVED Second Coming...don't listen to the media spin, especially NME!!
@MrManchester316 compilation albums like "Turns to Stone","The Complete Stone Roses" (even) "Garage Flowers" (which to be fair, IS the ONLY way u can hear the Roses oldest work & NEEDED saving from being lost forever)
aren't the same thing as "an Album" (like when u say "their 1st album"or "their biggest album" ect)
No matter how good it is...
It's a collection of their songs laid out by the record company (in this case Silvertone)
NOT the "experience" the band planned on us listening to
@MrManchester316 true roses fans have all the singles with b sides already. No need for turns into stone for us. But its good for those who missed out on the singles at the time I guess
@MrManchester316 am sure this is the bside tae one love, true? bought it on vynal with a limited edition postcard in the inside of the sleeve. seen them in a big tent on glasgow green round aboot 1990,memory a bit hazy. who said the second coming was shite?good fucken album, will they be as good this time round? who gives a fuck, was there first time round ha ha ha
@MrManchester316 True Roses Fans would have all those songs on Turns Into Stone on 12" Vinyl and would not be lining the people at silvertone records pockets. They killed a promising band and disapointed a nation.
