Don Airey is more experimental than Lord. Lord nearly always used the classic hammond sound (which I love) but the keys are such a diverse tool, they should be experimented with. Listen to the album Rapture of the Deep, there's honky tonk and synth on it and it's still a superb Deep Purple record.
GEEEEZ LOUISE! The most critical people in the world are musicians... Especially the insecure ones that can't play their way out of a wet paper bag, yet have balls (ego) enough to criticize players whose smelly skivies these critics are not worthy to sniff...
I disagree. The Hammond and only the Hammond is the Deep Purple sound. Nevertheless, Airey's solos are spectacular for the ordinary audience, but I don't think that the hardcore, Hammond-oriented Deep Purple fans appreciate them too much. Jon was experimenting with synth's in starting from the mid 70's and I don't think any of us liked the results. "Technology is a servant, not a master", he said, after he got rid of the synth-hangup. I'd say leave the experimenting to progrockers, where it fits.
