theres actually a reason they do this, they have ears on both sides of thier head, just like us but they use them differently. their sound and sight is very precice. They use a thing called triangular homing. It's thier way of finding thier prey. Watch another video of an owl hunting and you will see them do that similar movement and you will watch them catch the mouse! Its really a cool thing! The owl is confused about where the music is coming from.

Oh, and one thing you can't tell from this video is the sound they make. Sort of a continuous hiss. Or maybe it's only continuous because the nest we found had four babies in it.

I've seen barn owl nestlings do that head-swinging thing when there was no music around. Something to do with making sure they know where you are by picking you up in both ears (which are placed asymmetrically on the head). Yes, they're pretty hideous to look at when they start shedding their baby fluff and getting real feathers, and knowing they're checking you out makes you want to keep back a few feet; even though they can't fly I wouldn't want to get within raking distance of those talons.
