Oh gods, just happened on this and absolutely adore it. How could I not? It'd be madness not to fall happily into this. Thank you for sharing it. You're the best!
When I got this album and put it into my itunes, it was actually in the wrong order, but it was the order it grew upon me. Didn't even realize it, but it was in alphabetical order. I tried listening to the album in it's 'correct' order, but it doesn't work for me.
Try it! This song opens up the album, beautifully - a less 'thrashy' beginning Works so well. Thank you Jeff Buckley.
For all of you who say you've never heard a man sing so high; I suggest you have a listen to the equally late and even greater Billy MacKenzie. You could perhaps start with what might well be the highest note Billy ever recorded; "A girl named Property" by The Associates. Btw, this is a stunning vocal performance from Jeff Buckley. Billy would have been proud of him.
For those of you who don't know, this was written by composer Benjamin Britten, who also wrote an opera for A Midsummer Night's Dream, which is unearthly beautiful in parts. There is a particular scene near the end where a chorus of fairy maidens sing... holy awesome.
Lol... you wouldnt be able to tell if its Jeff Beckley or a woman. Its all falsetto reinforced with headvoice...its so LOVELY...even men can have beautiful voices, falsetto is an octave high in our usual voices(men) so its safe to say, when perfected, you see what voice you might have as the opposite sex...
when i first brought the grace album i didnt pay much attention to this song because i was wrapped up in the others. ( such as grace, hallilujah and lover you should've come over ) Now realising this song is so insightful and i love it so much. he should of done this on the Sin e CD too. jeff's music has made me so happy. RIP you angel
I do wonder, then, if you've heard his rendition of Van Morrison's Sweet Thing? If you haven't, it's easily his best cover. The vocals in the last minute of it are unparalleled.
Oh.. just took a listen to the last 2 minutes of both. I love the last song on the album, Dream Brother, especially the final poignant phrase, but there's no doubt in my mind now you're talking about the SONG "Grace" having listened to it again. Wow... I thought I knew every note, word and breath of this album, and yet I still discover amazing moments in it. THANKS for your comment!!! Now I need to go and wipe a tear.
My Grandmother died at 98 years old on Monday. I can not be at the services as I will be unfortunately out of the country. The recording of Jeff singing the 'Corpus Christi Carol' will be at her burial. Thank you Jeff for singing like an angel. You will meet her in Heaven.
that's interesting. i did search 'dido's lament' on utube and listened to a few renditions. i can only imagine that jb's interpretation would be spectacular. i'll start looking for it.
Per Wiki the carol is a Middle English hymm from the 15th century.
Just a little bit of it was used in the 70's movie, The Wicker Man; a very cool, strange, horror movie with a lot of music. It had a religious theme of a Christian versus Pagans, but neither side comes off well. Lovely music.
i had read that this was something else!! and, it is! if i hadn't just been combing google for an obit on jeff's dad, i wouldn't have come across this absolute treasure. keith oberman had posted corpus christi carol with jeff. is it possible that you only have three posts because the category is listed as "news and politics?" and not "music?" i don't really know how youtube works. i feel rather certain you'd have a lot of posts if people knew it was available. maybe, i dunno.

Actually, Jeff died on Corpus Christi day...
If you like that song, you should try to listen to his live version of "Dido's lament" (that he did at the Meltdown Festival in 1995).
