@NomadMusik Wrong sir. Jay-Z was bumping to Illmatic long before his debut and was a big admirer of Nas back then before they got into a beef.
And I'd just like to say that I like Common more in the 90s than now, but he isn't too bad in this decade compared to Jay-Z (huge ass sellout). And Eminem is starting to sell out, though not completely. You just have to cop Recovery to realize that.
Rakim, Nas, Common, and Lupe Fiasco are the best MCs in the game right now. Props to J. Cole, Wale, an
@A094H2 How can that even be possible? Illmatic was released 1994 and Jay Z was already featured in songs before that with Jaz-O in the very late 80's and early 90's.
@tomdabomb999 Yeah, Atlantic was originally was supposed to be something like Enemy of the State, but Atlantic forced him to make it mainstream. All Black Everything was genius, though, and Till I Get There was pretty good also.
I dont like Common either now... I just came here for the song cause its a fucking classic. And yes, they are sellouts.Maybe you'll understand why someday..
@TheCasuals13 So wouldnt that make Common a sellout too? He made a song with The Jonas Brothers. Neither artists are sellouts. Artists cant keep comin out with the exact same material because people will get bored and want something new. Artists have to expand. They don't make music for you, they make it for everybody.
Eminem is a sellout...(same as snoop dogg)...i dont care how good he used to be.We are talking about a guy who makes songs with lil wayne, bruno mars, and nicki minaj...end of story for me
@TheCasuals13 That doesn't make him a sell out. If that makes him a sell out, that makes nearly every rapper in the game are sellouts. Ludacris (Last Of A Dying Breed, My Chick Bad), Nas (My Generation), Jay-Z (Mr. Carter), Game (My Life (which, BTW, was an amazing song.), RED Nation, Martians vs. Goblins), Andre 3000 (The Real Her), Fabolous (Thats Not Love Remix), and some others.
@TheCasuals13 Working with other mainstream artists doesn't make you a sellout, it's okay if you don't like the music that's fine but Eminem can't be a sell out if he's making music that has substance and hes rapping about things he chooses to rap about without any second person telling him not to. He doesn't make music for the sake of money or sales like the true sellouts do.
I'm all for people having a right to an opinion, so if you like it, praise it, if not, fair enough... However disrespecting each other is NOT the way forward. It's all about love over heeeeeyuuuuuuuuuuuuh!!!

People think that all of today's music sucks but these artists are still around most of them are underground. So not all today's music sucks it just means that the corporations that have all of the money are saying that this all that they are going to promote...what you should be mad at is the people that are willing to bend to the corporations and sing and promote what they want because they want to have millions...but that means they have no integrity!
I'll keep it real I love this song so much i recorded to the track. It's called I Miss Her. not quite the same subject but check it out if you're interested. I'm just trying to get the song out there, give it chance. Thanks. forgive the spam
I don't like the way people are saying rap is dead and that rubbish on this song, yes hip hop died for a period but its back, its just underground. Emcee's like Blu, Jay Electronica, J. Cole, Big K.R.I.T. and Kendrick Lamar are still keeping the game true. Surely American's would know them, i'm from Australia and i know them. plus the old schoolers are still doing there thing.

I knew of Sugarhill Gang and Grandmaster Flash but really they are the only rappers from back in the day that I had heard. I listen mostly to Tupac, Dr. Dre, Timbaland, Nas, and Salt n Pepa. Adding this to the playlist. This is introducing me to a whole new world. Thank you for posting this.
Im so bored of people whininig about Soulja Boy and Lil Wayne on every rap video on youtube. Hey at least they brought the fun back to the culture and it's not like anyone forces you to listen to their songs? This song's awesome by the way!
The sad truth about why real hip hop never goes on the radio is because the big record labels are all owned by white business men that want money. They don't want change and they don't want progress. They want the black man to be though of as an idiot. There are millions of black men that aren't idiots and they don't get airtime. Great piece of art.
@RToor34 Yeah, i def agree, im usually listening to death metal and black metal these days, but sometimes i get lucky and find a masterpiece like this.
@RToor34 There's more music than just Rap and Rock, Asshole. typical generalizing top comment, which is also why its a top comment, it attracts the general public without strong opinions of their own, so dont feel too proud about it.
Just because your limited brain hinders you from finding good music does certainly not mean it does not exist.
Basically just calling you a dumbass (for the likely case you didnt understand the rest)
this is just a masterpiece...you gotta understand the concept of this song.
back in the day everything in hip hop was made with the soul.but with the concept of drugs.sex.alcohol.money.the soul for hip hop just...dissapeared. nowadays isn't easy find someone who make it for hip hop.and not for the paper.
i don't used to love her.i still love hip hop.it's just...isn't the same.
This fool talkin about west coast hip hop bringing down hip hop but the west coast is more influential and legendary than this chi town clown and his hippy rap!
@nemsy94 I know plenty of hip hop homey! i respect the realist like public enemy, nwa, wu-tang, 2pac, krs 1, bone thugs, and many more! Common aint nothin but a bitch who cried about the west coast changing hip hop, when the west made hip hop more well known in the 90s than it did in the 80s! this fool reminds me of another clown named tim dog or tim dick that said fuck compton coz nwa was being real and making mothafuckas like tim dick look worthless!
The only reason i looked this song up wuz cuz i saw it on a comment for the song Yesterday by Atmosphere. Its a good song but Yesterday by Atmosphere nd Never Falling Down by Living Legends are better
The song uses an extended metaphor, using a woman to represent hip hop music. The acronym "H.E.R" means "Hearing every rhyme, therefore stating "I Used to Love Hearing Every Rhyme and also Hip Hop in its Essence is Real."
@TheAzlyrics why bring up beiber in a hip hop song? he aint even hip hop, he's a pop star, frontin like he killed Hip hop, i dont like beiber either but damn keep his name off hip hop videos, he has nothing to do with hip hop
This is soo true in every way. When you listen to lyrics then and now you notice this song means soo much and how truly the hip-hop community is dead (almost).
i always loved this song but im high right now and after listening to this song again this song really hit me hard. i feal like tearing right now. what the fuck happened to hip hop?!
this song is def my #2 of all-time (I got the Message by Flash and the five as #1), but the song that he sampled is also fantastic (george benson "the changing world")
@carolinadredlock i agree that this is one of the greatest hip hop tracks of all time, but its pretty damn immature of you to think that anyone who doesnt think so isnt a real hip hop head, i myself have been into hip hop for over 10 years and dont personally think this is the greatest hip hop song, its still great but everyone has opinions and not thinking this is the best song still makes you a real hip hop fan if you know your real hip hop.
@BombSourDisel exactly man u cant blame lil wayne for being mainstream he is in hip-hop the same reason common is wayne gets more views cause he is hated on.
I think this is the best rap song ever. Even beats some of my favourite rapper Big Pun.

@RToor34 Definitely agree. It's nice to find new discoveries in music. It definitely isn't the same today.
Allisha991 6 months ago
@RToor34 There's more music than just Rap and Rock, Asshole. typical generalizing top comment, which is also why its a top comment, it attracts the general public without strong opinions of their own, so dont feel too proud about it.
Just because your limited brain hinders you from finding good music does certainly not mean it does not exist.
Basically just calling you a dumbass (for the likely case you didnt understand the rest)

best hip hop song of all time.of all time.
this is just a masterpiece...you gotta understand the concept of this song.
back in the day everything in hip hop was made with the soul.but with the concept of drugs.sex.alcohol.money.the soul for hip hop just...dissapeared. nowadays isn't easy find someone who make it for hip hop.and not for the paper.
i don't used to love her.i still love hip hop.it's just...isn't the same.

@METALSUCKS4LIFE you will die stupid as you are now. your west coast hip hop is fake, this is the thing, the true sound of hip hop.
nemsy94 1 year ago
@METALSUCKS4LIFE you don't know a thing about hip hop.
nemsy94 1 year ago
@nemsy94 but west coast hip hop is ONE MILLION times better than what we have now. so in relative terms west coast hip hop isnt that bad at all.
iflaw01 1 year ago
@nemsy94 I know plenty of hip hop homey! i respect the realist like public enemy, nwa, wu-tang, 2pac, krs 1, bone thugs, and many more! Common aint nothin but a bitch who cried about the west coast changing hip hop, when the west made hip hop more well known in the 90s than it did in the 80s! this fool reminds me of another clown named tim dog or tim dick that said fuck compton coz nwa was being real and making mothafuckas like tim dick look worthless!

I never really liked rap or hip hop but this is pretty cool
rockerr12595 1 year ago
The song uses an extended metaphor, using a woman to represent hip hop music. The acronym "H.E.R" means "Hearing every rhyme, therefore stating "I Used to Love Hearing Every Rhyme and also Hip Hop in its Essence is Real."
Nacionales1000 1 year ago 7
its like dance with the devil by immortal technique. its not talking bout a actual event. its a big metaphore and what everyones doin to hip hop.

@carolinadredlock wrong any of biggies tunes better fact
charlieeloise 1 year ago
@carolinadredlock i agree that this is one of the greatest hip hop tracks of all time, but its pretty damn immature of you to think that anyone who doesnt think so isnt a real hip hop head, i myself have been into hip hop for over 10 years and dont personally think this is the greatest hip hop song, its still great but everyone has opinions and not thinking this is the best song still makes you a real hip hop fan if you know your real hip hop.
BombSourDisel 1 year ago 11
@BombSourDisel exactly man u cant blame lil wayne for being mainstream he is in hip-hop the same reason common is wayne gets more views cause he is hated on.

@carolinadredlock i wouldnt say the best but its definitely the most consciouses because california has no business making hip hop music
