D&D is an Imaginative Role Playing game not requiring a board AT ALL!!! @vixenko Well, I'm married, roadied for two bands, own a business, sang in metal bands, and currently have a side job doing live sound. I'm also proficient at tae kwon do and folk-style wrestling. I started playing D&D in my early twenties with a bunch of my metal head friends when we did a pickup game at my friend's apartment around one in the morning. Eventually, our group grew in size to include some hot girls and it became that every session was a party for us.
@SaintRi Dude I swear to god that's EXACTLY how it is for me too. Except I'm 20 so I'm singing in a metal band right now. But still,I think it's funny that DnD gets this rep as if only nerds play it. Like,I mean I get girls just fine. And they KNOW I play DnD. I play Magic the Gathering too,and they know that.
John is a good friend of mine and understood that this project was simply poking fun at the game a little bit. He did his best to play along. Although he will be happy to hear his acting skills have improved. :)
Woot Woot! D&D, the mother of all rp! Well, there was that weird phase of larping that happened in the eighties that gave D&D a bad reputation... but nobody really remembers that... right? Instead of rolling dice and wearing wizards robes, now people go out to large fields in the midwest and beat eachother half to death with PVC wrapped in foam. Much more entertaining, and also called Dagorhair (i think that's how it's spelled). But I still love D&D.
I'm just wondering, how did you come by such a large1x1 inch grid, and if the end accurately portrayed the potential, how would i get one with dry-erase properties? It would make my games incredibly more convinient.
Hi, im a DM to and I made my own grid table, which I can draw on. I drew the grid directly on the table, and then I got one of those book Laminating rolls witch basically is a really wide roll of sticky tape. You can get it at most office supply stores. And I covered the table top in this. The trick is to have 1 person unroll it, and have another rub it with a cloth so you dont trap any air underneath. After that all you need is a set of White board Markers and your ready to roll. :P
Good video, but I have to disagree with how you called D&D a board game. D&D didn't really become a "board game" until 3rd edition came out because that is when the miniatures took off. Over all good video though.
Yeah, I'm honestly tired of people's dumb stereotypes on DnD players. In my school, if someone hears you even say dungeons and dragons, they laugh at you. It sickens me. It's just a game, it's only "geeky" if you make it that way.
same way at my school.Everybody calls me and my friend Josh "nerds" or "geeks" or call us fags or gay.We just tell them to screw off because we're Fighters and they are not.lol :D
I'm lucky I'm at the school I'm in. No persecution, no heavy persecution at least. They may say "lame," but that's it. My high school has about 300 students give or take 25. About 20 students, at least, play D&D.
I wish my school was like that. My school even has a D&D club that meets once a week, but I can't join because most of my friends don't like the game because of the stereotypes.
it was really fucked up in the eighties when gettting caught ad&d meant a trip to the pastor or an exorcism...... the propaganda back then was fucking crazy
I like to argue with my DM about making non human character's playable... aswell as (once he agree's) the level modifications 8D. ;_; he hates me and I normally die miserably.
Alot of Dice Sets, have a 20 sided, 12 sided, 2 10 sided ( one untils and one tens) 8 sided, 4 sided, one of each rest, but it has 4 6 sided dice, which I think is so retarted
i am a fanatic wizard and wizard is a class with many secret weapons and and a lot of damage dealing abilities but i believe that all classes in 3.5 edition can deal plenty of damage
Here's a cool rule to use with D20 games. I call it the Commit Rule. WHen it's a player's turn, he has three seconds to commit to his first action, Not do it, just commit to it. After that, he has two seconds to commit to each action.
Example (from SWRPG): Turn begins. Player has three seconds to commit to a move action. He then has two seconds to commit to a swift action (draw weapon). Then he has two seconds to commit to a free action (taunt someone). Then he has two seconds to attack.
I run a D20 Star Wars game. I used to run a D&D game. Before that, I was a mid-level rogue/level 1000 asshole.
Anyone have a player that does nothing? Like just sits there? Or tries to mug people all the time, thus condemning the party to death by a high level noble-type NPC and his bodyguards and minions? I had two, but they left my current game.
THe first game I did sucked. I wanted an actual, cool storyline, but my players just wanted to kill stuff and got really pissed when the Dwarven blacksmith said he couldn't sell level 1 heroes +5 bows in good concience for fear of them hurting themselves. One of them decided to go off and separate himself from the rest of the party. He met a werewolf shaman, attacked him, and was evicerated.
lol wow that does suck, will in my frist game the player only wanted to kill anything that moved, so after they keep saying they wanted to fight a baby dragon i let them, and the mother father and older brother. they were mad at me for killing them off but i told them that if they only wanted to kill town pll is was not going to DM
I explain to my players ther there are rules that they and I must abide by. If they attack someone, that person will retaliate. If they try to sell rare and expensive artifacts they stole from a dead magic shop owner they'll attract attention from the guard. If they sit in a tree and do nothing, they'll get attacked by a carniverous vine. If they pick a fight with a dwarf, his buddies will own them. If they take to long to act in a battle, their turn is skipped. THe list goes on.
But there's something awesome about seeing four of your friends get so fucking pumped after slaying an army of orcs and goblins to get to the Orb of Great Skrying that the king of Furawhy needs so his wizards can finally end the threat of the malevolent Korax Dragosi and his band of evil sorcerers.
Great video my friend, awesome job!!!i hope you double your views by people who don't know what D&D is,and maybe find out how fun it is!!!again great job!!!
P.S. I'll show this vid to people who want info...
D&D evolved from wargames, yes. Gygax (father of DnD) created a game called "Chainmail" which was a wargame set in Midevil times, which was his favorite time setting. D&D was adapted from Chainmail.
well, what you really need is the player's handbook, some dice, pencil, paper and a few friends over with the same equipment, it also helps to have at least 1 hardcore friend who playes and leads campaigns and games... (you can buy adventures in the shop or you guys can make your own...) check out your local hobby shop or university clubs... That is how I got into it ^_^.. Hope it helps ^_^
I've started a secret club for DnD...you'd be surprised what a twelve year old's promise of fun and killing in a virtual world can do to 14-16 year olds
Essentially, it is. You roll dice, take turns, and have a system of points determining win or loss. The addition of role play is what takes it to a completely different level. Granted, theres a lot more than just that, but comparing it to a board game is the best way to explain this game to people who have no experience or knowledge of DND whatsoever.
Thats a chessex battle mat. Most hobby shops should carry that brand or something similar. Dry erase markers work the best with them versus wet erase, and don't even think about permanent...trust me, we made that mistake by accident ONCE. =D
That is an actual mini that can be used for the game (colossal red dragon). I shot a whole segment with Tim being the stereotypical obsessive nerd, and that dragon was his pretend girlfriend...but we just didn't have time to edit it all.
ever notice that the DM has the best chair in the house and the rest just sit around in whatever they can find.. lawn chairs.. kitchen chairs.. just whatever he can find.. the cat if'n it would hold still long enough but they don't tend to do that..
Great explanation. My husband and I both play with a group of friends. We're all in our 30-40s. It's great mind expanding fun because it takes creativity and interaction.
The husband and I play. And we just may play with our kids. It invites kids to use their imaginations with mathematics, creativity, art, and a bit of period history as well as literature references. :) I just love to play. I'm the "Design" Mistress and he's the DM. I design his battle maps, I don't play much anymore. He's in Iraq. 12 months to go!
Look up a gaming store in your area and go there. There are usual people that play or can get you in contact with other players. Or, strange as this sound, go to your nearest Barns and Noble then go to the fantasy book section. There will be a shelf with Gameing manuals on it, strike up a conversation with someone who has thier nose in one of the manuals. Most of us are pretty friendly and more than willing to talk about our D&D. sessions.
If you don't have people to roll dice with play D&D online. It's not exactly like the die game but I play both and the online version is just as much if not more fun.
LOL. I am not a nerd, just so u know, but i have played DND and i have a LV 11 Warrior. It IS a VERY fun game. But some people just think it is for nerds, but it really isnt!! It is really hard to get my friends to concentrate on the game.......LOL. They start making crappy story lines about orcs with no balls. Once my warrior got his nuts chopped off by a Dark Elf.................
Hey, good job with this. I actually enjoyed it. Its hard to explain to people what DND is sometimes. Especially when they are just there to make fun of you. Which is funny because the group of kids I play with could probably take on anybody from our school.
I'll probably end up showing this to a few of my "newest" players to give them a BRIEF understanding of what this game is about before I begin to teach them how to play.
i try it once but it seem too hard for me to understand in what the hack is happening after . my freind 's theif cut my fighter's head ,put it in his helm giving to the enforcer getting the bounty ..... i play risk etc... but D&D is just to hard for me to understand .... i m saying is a bad game but just not my type ...
is D&D fun im 13 and i love fantasy stuff like world of warcraft and warcraft and alot of other stuff i also play games made by D&D like boulders gate
it's fun if you can get a good dm and friends who also want to play the game. if you have a person who has played the game alot, it's really fun and easy. the first time i played, i had no idea what i was doing so i just attacked things with a sword and it was a blast. (to anyone who has played: great cleaved 3 lizard folk ^_^)
Where did you buy that plain grid at? It looked laminated or something because you were using markers and erasing on it. I want wanna and dont know if its somekind of special grid or something and where to get one at....
How much of a disaster would it be to play in a game where all of us have never played? And if i'm playing with 3 other people (and i dm) what's the best group make-up
umm you are going to need a veteran DM cuz otherwise it just wouldnt work out right, with rules and confusion. Plenty of it. Even with my group and our DM of 30 years..but im only 19..It just doesnt work. Umm group make up...Fighter, Rogue, Cleric. Thats prolly the best u can get. Power, sneaky, healing/damage. Have Fun!!
You most certainly can pick up a copy at Barnes & Noble. In fact, most major book retailers carry D&D related books. If you don't have any luck there, you can check out a local hobby/comic book shop. If worse comes to worse, you can always order the books online, perhaps a bit cheaper as well.
I'm sorry, I just have to laugh at all the times you messed up. I know you probably faked it but who cares. The marrage thing and you falling. Priceless =)
Anywho, great video! I'm planning to start D&D this Saturday and need all the help I can get. I'll be the best Dungeon Master ever!
D&D is NOT a boardgame, it is a roleplaying game which requires NO board; only the board of the human mind.

I hate when people complain about the phrase "intensive purposes" when the actual phrase is "intents and purposes".
finshorer 4 years ago
I hate it when people use the phrase "for all intensive purposes" when the phrase is (for all intensive purposes)completely redundant.
And overuse of 'essentially' ugh...

ever notice that the DM has the best chair in the house and the rest just sit around in whatever they can find.. lawn chairs.. kitchen chairs.. just whatever he can find.. the cat if'n it would hold still long enough but they don't tend to do that..

He said he was married, but I don't see a ring on his finger. Does he take it off when he plays?

I'm not sure, actually. Regardless, Kristen (his wife) gave him a lot of crap for not having it on in the video. :D

Great explanation. My husband and I both play with a group of friends. We're all in our 30-40s. It's great mind expanding fun because it takes creativity and interaction.
uberVixen 4 years ago
Very well explained !!! :) The mind is an exellent tool to play with !!

Pretty well done !! .. Perfect.

Most of us are pretty friendly and more than willing to talk about our D&D. sessions.

the singular of "dice" is "die"
nerdygirl44 4 years ago 3
Didn't knew that !
rsl84 4 years ago

(to anyone who has played: great cleaved 3 lizard folk ^_^)

How much of a disaster would it be to play in a game where all of us have never played? And if i'm playing with 3 other people (and i dm) what's the best group make-up
perezzle12 4 years ago
umm you are going to need a veteran DM cuz otherwise it just wouldnt work out right, with rules and confusion. Plenty of it. Even with my group and our DM of 30 years..but im only 19..It just doesnt work. Umm group make up...Fighter, Rogue, Cleric. Thats prolly the best u can get. Power, sneaky, healing/damage. Have Fun!!

you dont have to use a grid, i dont
the players handbook is about 30$ at borders or barnes and nobles
ibeatcodin1day 4 years ago
You most certainly can pick up a copy at Barnes & Noble. In fact, most major book retailers carry D&D related books. If you don't have any luck there, you can check out a local hobby/comic book shop. If worse comes to worse, you can always order the books online, perhaps a bit cheaper as well.
