Pure Genius this song oozes life. Words cant describe what the dans music can create.Proof that music is such a higher art form than mere speech. My fav song of all time.
Katy tried I was halfway crucified I was on the other side Of no tomorrow You walked in And my life began again Just when I'd spent the last piaster I could borrow All night long We would sing that stupid song And every word we sang I knew was true
please, my company is TC Conveneince. , in Canada, Thank You, and There you will find Zen like objects, from Asia, -China, Thailand, Canada, ect, for spiritual enhancement, and self - actuallization/ realization.
From the first time that I heard Steely Dan in the 70's I have always enjoyed their music. They are one of the best groups ever. Bit of trivia; who played drums for these guys (Fagan & Becker) while they were in college? None other than Saturday Nights Live's Chevy Chase. Cool.
@Broadsidejohn : I think you're correct. I heard that rumor when I was younger (1980's) and I later read it on Wikipedia. I think it's kind of interesting.
The story I heard was that "Katy" is heroin and Dr. Wu was a doctor who treated addicts. Again, this is only one of many explanations of this song out there.
@Tuzotonic Dr Wu is a doctor who presumeably gives him "smack" on credit and as it turns out is also an addict himself. Walt was on the junk but I have no idea if Dr Wu has any equivalent in real life. Knowing of those 2 (Becker and Fagen), probably!
@hklinker I didn't check my vinyl LP. They are probably on there. There was a great commentary by Walter and Donald (?) of how the engineer (Nichols) made the album and how they got the master cut by a then new computer-controlled lathe, which blew their minds because it seemed to have a mind of it's own. We miss out on so much with CDs today. I miss playing the LPs but not cleaning them!
THIS IS A HI-FI RECORDING. STEELY DAN USES A SPECIALLY CONSTRUCTED 24-CH TAPE RECORDER, A 36-INPUT COMPUTERIZED-MIXDOWN CONSOLE, AND SOME VERY EXPENSIVE GERMAN MICS. INDIVIDUAL MIC EQ IS FROWNED UPON. THE SOUND CREATED BY MUSICIANS & SINGERS IS REPRODUCED AS FAITHFULLY AS POSSIBLE, AND SPECIAL CARE IS TAKEN TO PRESERVE BANDWIDTH & TRANSIENT RESPONSE OF EACH PERFORMANCE. TRANSFER FROM MASTER TAPES TO MASTER LACQUERS IS DONE ON A NEUMANN VMS 70
"COMPUTERIZED LATHE EQUIPPED WITH A VARIABLE PITCH, VARIABLE DEPTH HELIUM COOLED CUTTING HEAD. THE COMPUTER LOGIC CIRCUITS OF THE VMS 70 WIDEN AND NARROW THE GROOVES ON THE DISC IN ACCORDANCE WITH ITS OWN BIZARRE ELECTRONIC MENTATION FOR REASONS KNOWN ONLY TO THE DESIGNERS; THIS ACCOUNTS FOR THE LOVELY LIGHT AND DARK PATTERNS THAT CAN BE SEEN ON THE SURFACE OF THE PRESSING. VINYLITE COMPOUND IS USED. FOR BEST RESULTS OBSERVE THE R.I.A.A. CURVE."
