  • Howe is the maestro.

    Technique, feel, creativity, fuggitabowdit.

  • this song changed my idea completely of what a great guitarist is

  • he looks like the Crypt Keeper but he is a wizard on them strings.

  • Can't get enough of the clap. You rock steve.

  • Only a true master of guitar can play like that! thanks Steve!

  • guitar playing before beuty lol

    just kiddin excellant playin steve

  • I have always liked steve howe..love that martin cutaway he is playing..probably one of the $5000 ones.

my only criticism of steve is that sometimes I think he tries to put to many notes down..but he does because he can I suppose.

but as far as playing many different styles and even pedal steel, he is superb.

  • uses a pick..epic failure...

  • @STORYTASTIC How is that an "epic failure" ??

  • @STORYTASTIC that argument might have had a hint of validity if he was playing the bass but he isn't so fuck off

  • One of the greatest 3 minutes and 30 seconds ever played on guitar. The man is simply amazing!

  • I like it like how he just stands up and just left like that. Swiftly.

  • YES! :D:D:D:DD

  • Easily one of the greatest guitarists who has ever walked the planet

  • @Outie1179 AMEN. A Rare talent.

  • this guy taught god how to play acoustic guitar

  • @earthman202 he is the best

  • @BillGuitar64

    good words Bill.

I have a bunch of tunes like that from players like Kottke, Pat Donohue, L Juber etc that I learn a section, it takes forever, then shelve the tune for months or more b4 going on to the next chunk,

It does take that long for things to settle in.

    rob

  • vinno the lizard

SHUT UP!!! i dont care if your fucking ears and your tiny brain cant realize how bealtiful this song is!!

    long live STEVE HOWE

  • why the fuck do people bring Page into this? Led Zep fan boys, go away....

  • And to clear it up, i thought you said "I'm not understanding Howe's awesomeness" in the first comment instead of "understating"

  • YES

  • I love how there's whistling (from Steve?) out of genuine enjoyment going along with the guitar. Makes you feel even better every time you're listening to the song.

  • Some of the best rockabilly pickin' from one of the best prog rock guitarists - how ironic (and fantastic). When do we get to hear Brian Setzers version of Going For The One? lol

Mikey xx (blending rockabilly into everyones life) x

  • What a great guitar player. It kinda sux to see Howe getting so old.. think of Rush, Yes, Hackett, heck even DT is getting up there I suppose. With all these young guys with their beat boxes its a shame to see the raw talent of these older guys kinda fading out.

  • 1:22 the crowd stops clapping

  • thanks God!

  • I thought I was done when I learned "Crazy On You", but of course I find yet another dangerously complicated song that I feel obligated to go learn. I'll see you guys in a month.

    Awesome song by the way.

  • Nobody ever talks about how beast the song is, just who's the best guitar player. Everyone has different taste, how about we all shut up and listen to the song?

  • RIGHT on! DUDE!

  • Looks like he was enjoying himself.

  • I was the biggest Yes fan in the 70s and I'm still collecting Yes items. Even had the Roger Dean styled YES name on the hood of my car! Sure saddens me to see the aging of my All Time Heros. Guess we're all getting a bit older.....

  • I want his little finger!

  • why do people insist on maintaining that one guitarist is "better" than another? at best it's a naive way of thinking. anyway almost noone in the world is qualified to make that judgement, and the one who are, well...they don't.

  • I don't believe one is better than the other, that's bullshit as, mate..

Steve is such a cool gentleman, very friendly and he is so proud an content of this piece, and so he should. He wrote this one, on one evening in one go, the day before his first born son Dylan came into this world, back in 1971. He's got a WAY different style than Maestro Gilmour or Page, both equally as respectable guitarists as Steve.

I also like Leonardo Amuedo a lot, anyone heard of him?

  • i dont want to see anybody else dissing jimmy page, one of the three gods of guitar. I'm not understating howe's awesomeness, but when sober, page can annihilate the fretboard with a power howe seldom embraces.

    classic rock god- jimmy page

    progressive rock god- steve howe

    psychedelic rock god- david gilmour

  • Pretty much agreed, period.

  • none of em are gods wywh99 theyre just people. extremely talented people. and if any of those 3 heard you call them gods theyd probably be a little weirded out... come on dude, if jimmy was a god he wouldnta gotten into heroin which fucked up his live performances. i mean page was awsome dont get me wrong, but hardly a god. and how can u not understand howe's awesomeness after watching this video? i learned over the hills and far away in an hour, this song rips that little guitar riff to shreds

  • okay, first of all, i think howe is a better player than page, and probably the best ever, but second, r u seriously such a tight ass that u cannot comprehend the idea of a HYPERBOLE! i exaggerated. lock me up- in case u didn't catch the sarcasm, don't take that literally! i use "god" to embolden my expressions of appreciation for three guitarists who, IN MY OPINION, have done the most to revolutionize the way the guitar is played, although RIP Les Paul. Amazing guy too,

  • also, i learned that song very easily too, and ur right about over the hills and far away compared to the clap. but listen to bron-yr-aur. tell me that's not an acoustic masterpiece! and if u can play that, u r an incredible guitarist! it's up there difficulty wise with the clap. so, ungratefulliving420, dont go out of ur way to criticize a harmless and appreciative comment anymore. u can find more productive things to do. like work on bron-yr-aur or the clap or, of course...

    fuck yourself. : )

  • I have heard bron-yr-aur, and it is a great instrumental song...and i didnt realize i was criticizing you, im sorry for offending your sensitive little ego..but since u put it that way, it was hardly an appreciative comment, you just compared two different guitarists whos styles are uncomparable. I obviously understand the fucking exaggeration, i just get annoyed when people try to say this guitarist is a god, or ones better than another. Seriously, it gets old...

  • Bron-Yr-Aur is a beautiful song, but from a guitar player's perspective I learned it in 2 days. It's simple arpeggio in Open C tuning. Beautiful, don't get me wrong. One of my favourite songs ever, but compared to Clap it's beginner level.

  • @Squammish

    agreed.

Open C like lots of Kottke early material.

  • @WYWH99

I agree BYA is a great tune, and a challenge to learn. esp the right hand pattern. But I think it is not nearly as tough a learn as is Clap simply due to the left hand chord shapes. the open tuning JP uses helps to keep the chords in easily grabbed shapes.

    (I blv 5th & 6th srings down a tone each?

  • arent you clever, you dont understand when somebody is speaking metaphorically, you big headed cunt.

  • i see the metaphor its just dumb as shit, theres too many good guitarists to start putting some before others. people need to listen to their shit before going around calling jimmy page the "rock god" or clapton the "blues god". i was high as shit when i wrote that, and now im defending it, so fuck off.

  • @WYWH99

  • @WYWH99 if you ask me heroin ruined jimmy page years ago... well quit ranking guitar players. steve howe is different than david gilmour, but steve howe can play any style guitar better than anyone i've ever heard. i appreciate each player's ability doesnt matter who's best. it's all your opinion and taste.

  • @WYWH99 Pink floyd is mainly progressive rock, But david guilmore was more of the big image in their psychedelic days, rather than roger

  • @WYWH99 General overall guitar god -- Tommy Emmanuel. I rank him with all those you just named.

  • @WYWH99 Gilmour-era Pink Floyd is very psychedelic, more with Syd Barrett. After that they just kinda did there own thing which I don't think can really be classified, so I'd put Hendrix there. But pretty much everything else is right.

  • @WYWH99 sorry, i love david, but the psychedelic rock god is obviously Jimi.

  • Genius.

  • impresionante!!

  • I loved this video, not only because of the flawless execution of the song, but he seems so happy playing it.

  • All my respect Mr. Steve... YES!

  • Wonderful :-)

  • wow amazing =D

  • Go fuck your mother, Steve Howe is ten times more creative than Jimmy Dicksucker. When Steve Howe was 8 years old he already was ten times better than Dicksucker

  • Always been so underated!!!

  • no,no,thank you......

  • If there's a God, Yes will reschedule their tour. I'm hoping and praying.

  • wow he plays it even better nowadays, i didnt know that was possible, love this guy

  • true, he is physicaly destroyed, but his performance is better

  • better than the '71 !!!!

  • This guy is the SHIZNITZ

  • SO GOOD! :D

  • Great sound, neat, precise chords... thanks for sharing with us..

  • Absolutely great song love the tune completley

  • Always loved this tune - destroyed the vinyl learning it off the LP player - Go Steve!

  • page=classic rock

    howe=prog

    :]

  • Page = a thievin' magpie with a career based upon stolen riffs and changes.

Howe = a creative genius who credits his influences and has more talent in any breath he takes than Page will have in his entire ripped off career.

  • Life isn't black and white my friend.

  • dude suck a dick

i mean yea opninion opinion, but you cant dis page

  • I didn't dis him, I just observed out he isn't very creative or honest. I'll agree with you to a point - he knows which riffs to steal. I guess that's a talent of a sort.

  • sorry for the comment I did`t want to comparate my with steve , I am argentinian . and I don`t speak english very well

  • wait a minute...what was at 0:31?!!!

    two scales in one?!!!

    MAN YOU ARE MY SUPERHERO!!!!

  • one of the best guitarists on the world

  • Magic, the music from my youth...

  • could you not spam your crap?

  • No one cares

  • wonderful, thanks for posting this classic!

  • haha around 40 something seconds you can hear a guy whistling. this is awesome!

  • That is some awesome guitar playing. Thanks Steve for such great entertainment.

  • f**k'n awesome. true guitar genious!!

  • AMAZING hybrid picking! Screw the thumb-picks!

  • I love Steve Howe...

  • WOOOOOW truly amazing !!!

  • Love the guy at the end: "YAY!"

  • on the seattle news some guys from canada were saying that alex leifson is a better guitarist than stefe howe...

  • AMAZING!

  • As a longtime Yes fan, all I can say is, wow.

  • he looks like the guy from weetos - ya know? that proffesor guy? lol he is mint though

  • Thanks steve for picking up last weeks dinner tab, next week it is my turn

  • this is my fav live version of clap

  • I agree completly with you, he is one of the most versatile and skillful guitarplayer that have existed.

  • grown ass 60 yr old man still tearin it up... only other one left besides him is doc watson

  • He still gots it !!!!!

  • Lol I love the body slap he threw in there.... it went so well with the song.

  • He's influence was Chet Atkins. Not classical. Note the alternate bass picking patterns, just like Chet. Steve is the man.

  • That alternate bass is totally Chet Atkins, but on other songs he was very classically influenced. I absolutely love Steve Howes playing and I absolutely love Chet Atkins playing and also I love anything classical, so this seems like a good situation!

  • yeah i know what you mean it just shows that all the best songs can be played acoustically without all the other stuff on top!

  • Howcome everyone on youtube seems to want to argue rather than appreciate the music. Shit, we should all be going on how about music today sucks rather than whether jimi can be tabbed.

  • actually you can tab hendrix buy it on amazon the external difference of howe and hen is that hendrix was very much improvisational and used his chord melody type of playing to great use. Howe while live he may improvise at times knows exactly what he is playing and lightly improvises around the structure he lays out. In my opinion you shouldnt rate guitarists against each other and both are Awesomely great but in my opinion howe is underrated very much

  • Steve Howe is a consumate artist, and a person of class--always has been. Can't think of another guitarist as creative or immensely versatile today as Steve Howe.

  • One of my Fav guitar players!!!

  • Jimi never took a lesson either... of course Howe is more dexterous- But Jimi was closer to..... God..?..!?!, and he does defy description. You CANNOT tab Jimi, but you can tab Howe. They are my 2 favorite rock guitarists. I love this vid because, Steve is still getting better!! (amazingly). I look fowrward to seeing him again. Jimi, R.I.P.

  • Hendrix also had the habit of ingesting large amounts of LSD immediately prior to live appearances, remember.

  • You can't tab Hendrix? I think I have every LP by Hendrix in tab. None for Howe.

  • I've got a copy of Guitar World from 1995 with the tab for The Clap in it. Seems pretty accurate to me.

  • Do you know if the tab online is the same as in your magasine?

  • hendrix, page, clapton, townshend, howe are the maestros...but howe is different.

he never had a course of guitar play

  • I'm sorry... You listen to Howe and you still consider Hendrix and Crapton up there? Personally, I consider Page as a milestone that few guitarist can even contemplate being close to, and Hendrix and Crapton don't.

  • Page WAS NOT a great guitarist, either.

NOBODY EVEN APROACHES STEVE HOWE'S LEVEL OF SKILL.

  • You guys are talking about to different kind of guitariest. Sure page had some simliar kind of music as howe but page was a stepping stone for metal and Howe is just a excellent acoustic guitarest but u cant compare them. two different types of music , two different artists

  • i think they were simply compareing

  • MAESTRO!!!

  • Steve Howe is still on great form after all these years. Man, you don't get much better than this guy...

  • Steve Howe is awesome, there's no doubt. But... I think he messed up right around 1:31-1:33 and his tempo slows. Just proof that everyone's human, including him. heheh

  • it does slow down...

  • nah he doesnt mess up, i know what you mean tho, its a very discordent song, but a great great peice of music, fantastic infact. But god it shows he can still play after all these years, still as amazing as ever

  • The master!

Thanks for posting this BRILLIANT video.

    Regards,

    CB

  • nice!

  • Something about this song makes me think it should be played on a banjo :P

  • Something about you makes me think you should be hit on the head by a Banjo

  • the gollum

  • they dont come much better than this guy.

  • what about hendrix, page, clapton, and townshend?

  • Townshend was average, good songwriter though. Page was sloppy but still admirable. Clapton is the next step in single note blues (BB King style).

Steve Howe continues to be great. I wish i was that good.

Hendrix defies description. He was simply the best.

  • Check out Hackett my dear friend. Hendrix was merely an innovative icon, albeit a good one, who hardly 'defies description'

  • Hackett wasn't that great either.

  • They DON'T come ANY better.

  • Yes. There's a reason why he was Guitar Player magazine's guitarist of the year four years in a row, 1977-1980.

  • whats the reason?

    aha just kidding

  • It was 1977-1981 and he was the 1st inducted into the Guitar Player magazine Gallery of Greats, I think they wanted to give others a chance, he may have gone on for a few more years if they hadn't. I think they created the Gallery of Greats because of him.

  • Gallery of Greats was created when Howe was named Best Overall and Stanley Clarke-best electric bass, each of them for the fifth consecutive year.

  • Not bad for someone who doesn't read music and is self taught. (ck his sight)

  • My Favorite player on Earth!

  • HOWE does he do it

  • The master.

  • Nice playing old man...maybe your next time you would play some more...exciting...but nice, i must say, nice...

  • You've got to be joking man

  • Idiot.

  • Wow, he look old. Very skinny arm. NICE PLAYING

  • He "looks" old, Mr. Chinese man.

  • Steve Howe is king.

  • Bless you, Howie - that was a great version.

  • More Right hand than other thing! Excellent player!

  • What is the "other" thing?

  • You'll nevere know! HAHAHAHAHA:D

    The Others :O

  • whew!!!

  • if there were only three triple albums that i would take on a desert island, it would be yessongs, unity in diversity, and http://groups.msn.com/Philochat/chat.msnw

  • steve is great!!

  • Ahhhh Steve Howe :) I'm learning this on guitar (with GREAT difficulty) so it's nice to see the master play it :)

  • I better don't start to learn this..omg it's too difficult for me..

  • This is the first I've seen him use a cut-away.
