I heard ABBA songs all my life from the very beginning, I heard all of the early hits: Waterloo, SOS, Fernando, was heard a lot in Wisconsin, where I grew up, followed by many more hits of theirs....
they were not really praise worthy, they were indifferent, and besides they had a lot of personal pressure, since they were 2 couples on the verge of divorce.-----musically, i really find it is a con-genial inspiration between both worlds. europes musical depth and tradition together with americas bold approach to music as a personal style and feeling caused a broad spectrum of modern music which is pretty unique!. one crow shouldn´t pick the other´s eye
One crow shouldn´t pick the others eye. Now theres something we can both agree upon!! By the way, I enjoyed this spirited debate. Especially since I assume that English is not your first language (?).
On America being a Euro invention: correct. How can I deny that! What with being a history buff, and the fact that my father was born in Italy and my mothers family immigrated from Ireland. With this in mind, it just kills me to hear snotty Euros poke the U.S. for things like enslaving Africans and the American Indian genocide. We did neither! That was your people!
On interviewer looking down on the group: what? I thought he asked several legit questions of a group that had not really made it in North America at that point in time. Besides, as fun as Abbas music is (& it is!), can they really be thought of anything more than a guilty pleasure?
well, then north america was the only spot in the world where they had not made it yet at this time----------and to me abba are serious artist, no TV-pros...just like in the song "thank you for the music": it goes:"....i´m nothing special, in fact, i´m a bit of a bore [..........] but everyone listens when i start to sing". they are less guilty pleasure, more bored and trying not to be rude.
from elvis to randy newman, america has most superb artists....andeurope is in no inferior,..is it???
North America was, in fact, the only part of the world where ABBA were not superstars by 1976. Truth be told, their U.S. success (& they had plenty!) was quite minimal when compared to their Euro success. And I agree, in this and every other interview they are FAR from rude. In fact, their manners are praise worthy.
As far as Europe not being inferior musically? Humm, not sure about that one. The 20th centurys most popular musical forms were Rock and Jazz, both American creations. Though the UK supplied us with several great rock and jazz artists, the rest of the continent lagged behind in that department. Hence, most European artists of the 20th century had only a national appeal. American music makers were truly international!
IT is quite clear to see that this interviewer was totally unprepared to do this interview. No research done beforehand . He should hv been embarrased over this performance .
ABBA - Worldwide respected and beloved.both in english and spanish spoken countries.not to mentionate any other language country. They have they patent and gain merit from all of us, no need on monkey-bussiness wherever you may point - much less american or japan territory...aghhrrr! Their LOSS!
The only territory where they don't sell records is the USA and Japan. Well, with guys as interested as this interviewer, no wonder. No scandal, just ordinary people is probably too boring for a country of extremes.
They do sell records in the USA and Japan. For example, ABBA "Gold" has sold over six million copies in the USA. ABBA sell records everywhere, always have done - and always will do.
yes, they do sell records in the USA!! For example Dancing Queen was a numer one hit in the US. and Lay All Your Love On Me reached the top of the Billbord Charts. In Japan even the song which didn´t have success in Europe like On And On And On where top 10 hits there.
Lord!!!!! How horrid for this interviewer to have this in video!!!! Even I could have had a more compelling interview and questions for them!!!!! I am surprised he didn't ask them "who are you people???"!!!!
Idiot interviewer indeed. Weren't these people briefed on the group BEFORE the interview began? "Danish version of Tony Orlando and Dawn?" For another painful view, check out Dick Cavett's ABBA interview.
No shit, what an idiot. Having an opportunity to interview gods like ABBA and to blow it like that. His questions were diotic. I'm sure that the ABBA were irritated, but being true professionals they wouldn't show it.
ABBA recorded Waterloo in French/Swedish/German and SPANISH? That's really strange because, on their 'The Complete Studio Recordings' it should've appeared on the Rarities, but as far as I know, they haven't released "Waterloo" in Spanish
That would have to be the most stupidest DJ I have ever heard!!!! maybe because ABBA is not a american band...because we all know the whole world evolves around america...lol
If you toured the usa you have melted the hearts of the americans. Anyway you didnt bother to make a furius stagedive every day. Probably the company wanting to much. Money , money, money.. thats the soul of the americans then and today, easy living all the way. perhaps someone else do the dirtywork today, and the Iraq oil for free! Enjoy! Abba and your easy living.
No matter what!!! a DJ in the 70's still should have known what the eurovision contest was...Oh thats right because the Americans were not included....typical arrogance of Americans that is of anything that is not American....
Relax folks. Keep the interview in context. ABBA was a fairly insignificant pop act in the U.S. during the 70s, rarely even hitting the top 10 (only 4 times!). If they were covered in the media, they were more likely to be portrayed as the objects of ridicule than superstars, combined with the fact that they hated coming here. It makes sense that a typical radio DJ wouldn't know all that much about them.
mongoose7x is right. They weren't a huge act in the States, which Benny confirms in this interview. Maybe you think Benny is an "arrogant American" too, eh?
Haha, you are saying that because you live in the fattest country all over the world, AND THE most country that is in the war, and the worst country! I think you write that because you want to be from europe. YOU are jelous.
yeah, Ludde420 is jealous. He/She just proved it. Even though you hate America so much, I see you have no problem posting on OUR YouTube and probably buying OUR music and watching OUR movies, etc etc...
For your information i don't watch your movies because they are all the same. And why should i be jealous? I bet your weight is 300 kilos and right at this moment you are eating "Big Mac King Size Menu" at the computer. I am not jealous, i just think that your country is so ridiculous, "Freedom", well, why do America have KKK and those stuff? That's just showing how non-developed America are.
Just edmit it, all countrys are using stuff from other countrys, we are all developed, some more than other. I just want to say it's extremely ridiculous and arrogant to sit there and say: "Bla bla America is best you are jealous" and stuff like that. That's just proving that you are about 12 years old and want some attention. Do you just come to puberty and must make some noise?
Ludde420, why is the suicide rate in Sweden the highest per capita in the world? You'll be disappointed to here that I'm neither 12 yrs old or overweight. So, tell us, why are you so sad? Why do your people feel compelled to kill themselves?
How should i know why? Maybe it's because you make Iraq's flee to other countries. And when they come they don't feel good and kill themselves. And i doubt that the fact you're saying really are fact. I think it's some shit you just made up to say something. And for your information i do not feel that sad anymore. And your little hippie-country can go to hell. Overwriten of "freedom", why isn't it safe to go outside? Why is dark ppl not welcome? Tell me why! Do that, i answered your questions.
I hope you realise that this is a discussion, not an argument.. It's a discussion of our different countries. The upsides and downsides. Every country has done something bad. Every state has done something bad. But every country/state has also made many things good. I feel good that America helped alot of people through life! And btw. The best movie you ever done was "Pursuit of Happyness", the documentary, that proves here is hope in this crazy world we live in! Peace V
It would be handy to know when and where this interview occurred. The Abba voices are very clear. But the interviewer is so quiet, you don't know what questions are being asked.
Ok thanks. I guessed it had to be America with those questions. At 4:25 Benny says "2 years since Waterloo" that makes it 1976. They did promo trip from Oct 10-24 1976 visiting Los Angeles, Vancouver, New York, Philadelphia. You could put this in the notes.

now read and learn: america is no more than a european invention, this no insult, it´s a fact, look in a book with the word "HISTORY" on front.
America is somehow europe´s naughty child,
and the problem is, if at all, the american superiority complex. europe is rooted enough to be humbly content.
Just take the example above: a noname showmaster feels justified to look down on some of the greatest musicians in rock history!!
